Possibly. They certainly didn't accommodate him last year when they matched the Bears' signing sheet for him (or whatever it's called).

I believe it was two years ago but things change and in the same way players understand it’s a business, they also appreciate when it’s possible to do right as well.

  2. I love Lindy but for the “Sabres give up the first goal because DG doesn’t know how to fire them up and/or prepare them better crowd,” the only team that has allowed the first goal more then the Sabres this year is your New Jersey Devils

He’s not wrong, though. I don’t find his take any more ridiculous that the op.

I’ll watch every game. I’ll even root for an heroic run to 9th. It means we’lol get to watch some great hockey for the next month and a half.

I wasn’t really commenting on the opinion as much as the motivation but I would disagree slightly with your assessment. A flawed team getting hot and overtaking five or six equally flawed teams seems a lot more plausible then the same flawed team then winning four series against teams clearly better.

While I don’t expect the Sabres to do it, for the first time in years I think Buffalo is capable of being better than all but maybe five teams in the conference. Washington, Pittsburgh and Tampa are clearly on the downturn of their cycle.

    This right here is perfect.

Interesting.  I can see either possibility being true.  I'm also not sure there was a guy out there in the $4MM to $6MM range who was willing to come here on a short-term deal and who would've made a difference.

I think the “would’ve made a difference” might be in play here. Miss the playoffs at $75M live another year. Miss the playoffs at $82M, see you later.

I mean why stop at playoffs? If the Sabres have a real shot at making the playoffs despite the gauntlet Brawndo lays out, why not say the Sabres are legitimate Cup contenders RIGHT NOW? Why would they cool off after winning 52 of 55 games or whatever plausible scenarios some are proposing? In fact it should be easier to win the Cup than make the playoffs. You can go 16-12 and do that.

I get that you prefer to play the pessimist and I understand why you would get there. What I don’t understand is why you have such disdain for those who don’t choose to wallow in misery.

Buffalo has the second hardest strength of schedule remaining including the Western Canadian Road Trip with a stop in Seattle.

I just do not see it happening.

I have a hard time believing that the GM of a team that finished one win out of the playoffs last year, would willingly enter this season with the third most cap space.  I still believe GMKA is operating under an internal cap.

I go back and forth on the internal cap. Trades that came close only to fall apart, usually because of NMC or free agent choices would seem to indicate that he was given freedom to go higher. On the other hand, they just might be good at getting their story of “trying” out to just enough people.

This team loves giving fans hope And we fall for it every single year.

I didn’t say I had hope. I’m just making a point that the numbers don’t jive with the way the narrative is going. Have they been a disappointment, certainly. Am I preparing to put a deposit down on playoff tickets? No.

  8. I know, I’ve shared my frustration with management and how this season has unfolded ad nauseum. I also get that it’s a long shot. I just don’t think it’s necessarily over.

I will not be satisfied with a valiant run to ninth place. I blame KA for mishandling the last two years. I’m not wavering in my belief that they could have done a lot better but UPL has been a revelation and they are not as bad as some would have you believe

We all know how Sabres media works. Sabres media relations in concert with the hockey department determines what the story of the day is going to be. DG brings something up in the presser, and the player to be highlighted is made available. The lazy media eats it up because it's easier than doing any critical thinking. There's virtually no difference between what the writer employed by the Sabres and what the beat guys put out. Mike is the outlier and you all hate him for it.

If you go back through GoBillsinDallas' collection of Sabres news stories this year and throw out the games, you'd get the impression the team was leading the Eastern Conference.

So yeah Greenway is awesome. Big whoop.

It’s not Sabres media, it is how all sports team and their media relations work in 2024. There may be scattered exceptions but they all right the same stories.

    They absolutely did.

Maybe I’m thinking of Gratton or Gilmour.

But those were trades and pre NMC.

Almost all top players have those now.

We weren’t attracting UFAs.  Warrener, Dumont, Briere, Drury - all trades

They weren’t trying to sign free agents. It’s why Hasek wanted out. It’s why Peca forced a trade. The Rigases were not competing for top veterans and because there was no cap there were few free agents anyway.

  11. They did not have trouble getting guys to come here during the Hasrk days. Ownership chose not to compete. I never once heard of any reservations from Geoff Sanderson.

That being said, obviously Buffalo isn’t first choice of younger guys that have a choice but if “fans that have expectations” fall anywhere on the list of reasons to sign for free agents, and I doubt it, there are about 29 cities were fans expect more.

The Bills were a fluky fumble through the end zone of getting blown out.  They may make the playoffs most years with Josh but until proven otherwise, this is the Chiefs conference.  After dealing with Brady for 20 years, we now have Mahomes indefinitely.

Can’t argue that it’s Chief’s conference but I can come up with a play or two to make the opposite argument.

This Peca thing is all wrong.  Peca is better off working for Laviolette than for DG.  He already knows what DG teaches, and what he doesn’t.  Seeing Laviolette put his system in, in one off-season (like normal), is a great experience for him.

If you think Peca is a good HC candidate someday then be happy for him now.  He is working proven Cup winning coach.

Not to mention that there is no evidence that Peca would be any better then who they have.

To the question yes, it was a horrible off season with only one idea and that was these kids will grow into a force as is. Stay the course and that's it.

To the bold, I hated that more than anything this year and have said so. Big mistake. I was a huge Peca fan back when he was a Sabre player and was gutted by the way he left the team. Devastating. Peca was a true leader, a real captain, and he played 100% the "right way" as they say. If we had a Peca captain on this team I am sure things would be different so having a Peca coach was the next best thing.

I suspect, however, that Peca's philosophy does not mesh with Granato's philosophy and Granato didn't want him as an assistant and since Granato is Adams' guy that was that.

My dream hope is that Brind'Amour will in fact be available come season end, Adams will hire him and maybe we also bring back Peca as his main assistant. Pipe dream.

Again, what evidence is there that Peca will be a good coach? I too, loved the player and hated the way that ended but it has nothing to do with his coaching abilities.

@SwampD & @Weave - you boys do such a great job parsing all the sh*t out of my arguments, a daunting task

@DarthEbriate - you do a great job helping me get more Star Wars sh*t *into* my arguments

@GASabresIUFAN you have no idea how much time you save this particular Hobbit through your admirable attention to detail in often laying out the facts and data “fair and square with no contradictions”. I mean it: it relaxes my ocd.

(the system isn’t letting me tag/@ Randall Flagg, he must be out for more milk)

@nfreemanis a good mod who responds to my posts

@bob_sauve28 and @Zamboni and @Norcalforce me to reassess, evaluate, and confirm or change my biases, basically on a day to day basis

@Pimlachtops our leaderboards for “likes” received in last year: and that’s SAYING something

@bunomatic is AUTOmatic for good contribution on any topic

Always learn something from @North Buffalowhen our paths cross on this board

@PromoTheRobot defends goaltending more than I defend Eichel (and THAT’s saying something) but this fellow’s heart is so clearly in the right place given his commentary on wanting the building to be full for his precious Sabres

    @Wyldnwoody44 incomparable swag. Enough said.

@MattPieknow more about Math than me, and *THAT’S* say-ok I’m done with this call-back joke

    Where’s @qwksndmonster? Miss the dude

@pi2000is the best poster here because he has the best avatar. That’s really all there is to it. Oh, have you heard he played hockey? He might have mentioned it once or twice if you missed it

@Derrico I find to be the Swiss-army knife of sorts of posters: I always feel like, regardless of topic, you’ll have something interesting to say

@Curtreminds me of a young me tbh (sorry, just the way it goes). Though actually now I think about it, I think we’re the same age. Ok, you remind me of a young Marvin Hamlisch

@LTS provides a perspective I can’t match, but aspire to

@tom webster obviously needs to be mentioned for his insight

@French Collection thorough attention to detail. I find you to be a particularly level headed and well reasoned poster

@CallawaySabresconsidering how red-faced he always is about the team and his tickets, there’s a loyal, golden heart there that even Pony Boy would be proud of

@Crusader1969 you have such a knowledgeable base when it comes to the draft and development side of the equation, i find your comments towards others facets, such as the team’s need to be more urgent, exceptionally fascinating because, being so in tune with the development side, one should pay extra attention when you start to spill on it being go-time.

@#freejameWe agree a heck of a lot. You obviously see what’s up

@mjd1001 we seem to disagree a heck of a lot. You obviously see what’s up.

@Mustache of Godyou complimented me on my moustache, once. For that, I am appreciative

@Broken Anklesand @erickompositör72 should post a wee bit more. If a little is good, more must be better!

@Ducky you seem to have taken up permanent residency here in the wake of the Kane trade. I can comfortably say you are the best acquisition from that deal. We’ve gone back and forth a lot on the Jets over the years and you’ve lost a lot of arguments in the process…but I can honestly say, from the bottom of my heart, that after all this time:

    I still hate the Jets.

    And finally, @SDS

    ..you know what you did.

Thank you for the mention. I agree with all of the other mentions and would like to add @LGR4GM, @JohnC and I miss @Eleven and @deluca67
