Well, I didn't go into this thinking about it that way, but it's probably a likely conclusion. I think a kid at 18 isn't generally developed enough physically - and I want to add emotionally - to handle playing a sport like hockey with fully developed men for 8-9 months of the year. There would obviously be exceptions from time to time, but I think the starting point should be, as DG says in the article you quoted, can they handle the physical demands of the schedule...and I would add playing a physical sport with grown men.

Just a note, too, on the emotional/mental part: after listening to a lot former players in podcasts, I think that if mental health isn't accounted for, a lot of these guys wind up damaged.

They wind up damaged because no one ever told them they weren’t good enough early enough or they didn’t put in the effort needed. Guys like Tage and Casey end up fine because they were always good enough, it just takes certain individuals longer to develop and mature. Guys like Girgerenko and Luke Adam were never going to be good enough no matter what development path you took. Sports teams are starting to realize that they are wasting some prime years by adhering to old school development paths.

But we're not talking about generalized groups; we're talking about a specific individual at a certain place in their physical and emotional development.

I’m not making any judgement about this specific player. I’m leaving the judgement up to the team. However, if they decide he is part of a lineup that gives them the best chance to win the next game, then you keep playing him until he doesn’t.

This is the only concern holding me back. The kid is showing that he belongs. But there's a long, grueling season ahead. Could he possibly be ready for that?

Maybe they'd roster him all season and load-manage his ice time?

I don't think it's quite that simple, though. Because he is clearly deserving of a roster spot based on his present play. And yet ... how does he project over a full season? It's a huge consideration.

    The fooking WHO now?

I'm showing my arse as someone who doesn't follow the league generally.

There's recent precedent for a player like Benson being on an NHL team as an 18 year old?

    Um, what?

If he helps you win any games the first couple of months, it could be the difference between making the playoffs and not. I know some see juniors and minors as some magic development tool but I’m on record as thinking that’s on par with “old wive’s tales.”

Not the two cities part though. You need someone from a relocated franchise and I’m having trouble thinking of anyone else. There aren’t many career Jets or Whalers.

I don’t know that Shane Doan will ever make that list.

Oh, I didn’t see the two city part. What about Modano? Damn, forgot about the 40 games in Detroit.

A random Joe Sakic reference this morning got me thinking about one.  I don't know the answer but it might be fun to research.

    1. How many hall of famers played their entire career with one team?
    2. How many of those played in more than one city?

I also wonder if the WHA could complicate the question.  If someone played in the WHA and then just one NHL team, would you count that for #1?  I'm not sure if anyone even did that since guys like Howe and Hull wound up playing with that same WHA team post merger.

I would venture to guess that several Montreal Canadians did.

I think there are better candidates for that role.

I would agree with this. However, I could also see a role for Kane but I wouldn’t prioritize him. Like Brawndo, I fear a Kane signing would indicate a Terry push.
I know the thought of finishing his career in Buffalo has intrigue Kane and I know TPEGS is interested. I never got the sense KA was interested.

A couple of final points, I think he has grown up a lot. The false rape allegations really shook him up. However, doing nothing about the mess in Chicago doesn’t speak well of him. On the other hand, I think the leadership in Buffalo is strong enough to overcome any issues Patrick would bring.

  7. Just wanted to mention two “old school things” as well,

Billy Sheehan, originally of Talas is one of the country top bassist and is considered by some to be the grandfather of lead bass.

Willie Nile is a critically acclaimed folk rock singer and has performed with a wide variety of acts including several appearances with Bruce Springsteen.

I'm in the same boat. When I tell the story, people wonder if I still have the tickets - heck no, I was a student and returned them for the $20/$25 they cost

Yep. I was pissed because for the first concert,  I bought 10 tickets and lost the $25 service charge($2.50 per ticket) For a high school senior making $2.75 an hour it was a big deal.

Wow! That’s fascinating stuff. So Harvey was from Buffalo? (Yeah, can’t brag about that connection anymore)

Are you referring to the Zeppelin concert on the tour during which Robert Plant’s son drowned (seems like a few days or couple of weeks prior)? I had tickets to that concert. So sad.

Being the same age as U2 (I am basically saddled in the middle of the four), also being Irish from both parents, and growing up in Buffalo, I have always felt a kinship with the band. Music of my life. But something about their music often reminded me of my life in Buffalo. Can’t really explain it.

Just to clarify, Harvey went to UB but he wasn’t from Buffalo and I’m not sure he graduated either. He was a couple years ahead of me.

I had tickets or vouchers for two Zeppelin concerts that never happened.

The first would have been around 77/78 and I thought someone had a bike accident although I’m not 100% sure. The second was when Bonham died which I think was around 80.

Talas had a regular Monday Show at a Club called Stage One.

On December 8th, 1980 a little known band from Ireland opened for them called U2

Bono still refers to playing this show in Buffalo the day that John Lennon was killed

Bono was actually playing pong (google it) with the wife of Corky Burger, one half of Harvey and Corky Productions who pretty much controlled the local music scene during the 70’s and 80’s. You may know Harvey better as Harvey Weinstein. I used to like to drop his name and mention how he hooked me up with Led Zeppelin tickets(a show that never happened) until he became persona non grata at UB.

Another fairly well known band made one of their first American appearances at Stage One. I stopped in one night to grab Mighty Taco which was actually located right in the bar and saw Sting belting out Roxanne to about sixty less then interested patrons.

Novikov had 5 assists through 2 prospect challenge games. He was very good at the 3v3 tournament as well. He has 2 years of KHL experience and just turned 20 at the end of July while being 6'4" and over 200lbs.

What do you expect from him in the AHL?

Personally I think we might have a sleeping giant about to explode. His puck handling and skating are shockingly advanced for someone who did not flash in the KHL point wise. His KHL role from what I have gathered was to play about 10min a night and simply, stop the attack, get the puck out. He seems to be exceedingly good at shutting down opposing forwards both with his stick and with his body as needed. My guess is that if he plays 60games in the AHL we see about 35pts in his first NA season while being excellent on the PK. Guess time will tell.

I’m excited that you are excited about this guy. If the big three becomes the big five(I am including Johnson) it will go a long way to prolonged success through 2030)

Would you call our top six small? I think they are kind of on bigger side, aside from Skinner. Mitts has turned into a bull, too

Maybe they are just small when we draft them and they just grow into man bodies later.

If you watch the embedded show, Adams even jokes that they will be accused of leaning toward smaller players.
They draft highly competitive, talented players. Size is overrated anyway, almost as much as hits. Besides, Ray, Barnaby and May aren’t exactly big guys either.

With Tuch-Thompson-Skinner and Cozens-Quinn-Peterka we have maybe one guy who hits, Cozens. The whole team doesn't hit, that's been fairly established. We have to trade for hitters. Why can't we draft them?

    Again, hits are so overrated.

Why shouldn't someone who is in demand, ask for their full value?

Further more since you brought up Tampa. Hedman signed for about 10.5% of the cap when he did his last deal. In today's dollars that would be about 9.2million if the cap goes up to 87.5million next year. Adding 1million more to that number brings you up to 12% of the cap. Point and Kucherov make 11.4% of the current cap. Eichel makes 12% of the cap, Stone makes 11.4% of the cap. Makar currently makes 10.4% of the cap.

My point is that the cap% number for Dahlin says he should get around 10-10.25 if the cap is truly going up to 87.5million. That would put his number right in along with what we see from other stars and all those teams I picked won cups recently. While the players (as far as I could tell) were signed to those deals and on the teams. 10.5 is probably a little high but anything 10.25 or less is right in line with what we should expect and keep in mind the 10.5 would only be slightly high for a year.

The cap will be $100M before Rasmus’ contract is up. The smart guys should follow Matthew’s ’ example and go short term. The problem is there agents have dual motives and are pushing for long term deals which should ultimately benefit the Sabres.

But you’ve been saying you know something for months now. Doesn’t the above contradict your previous points? Or are you one of the few that actually does know? I guess I’m just confused at this point.

It’s been two months and I still believe the deal was done around June 30th. Did something thing change, maybe.  I guess we will find out what they want us to know when they release some embedded episode.

I just want to note that I'm not here to rub salt...I just wanted to post what I had heard from Peters.  He's no more reliable than Chad is, IMO.

The fact is that very few really know anything. You make assumptions because this guy knows the person that does the background check or that guy knows the lawyer reviewing the contracts or your friend knows the doctor scheduled for the physical.

The only certainty is that these things don’t take months if dialogue. Contracts get done in less than an hour when free agency begans. It’s all just posturing and sound bites to feed the masses.

What’s it going to take for you to admit you and your “source” are wrong? If he signs for 5 years are you going to hold firm and say a strong gust of wind came into the office and blew the contract into the shredder before it could be faxed to the league?

I’ll admit I was wrong when it turns out I was wrong but the next time Andrew Peters is right about anything Sabre related will be the first time.

How does it make financial sense to spend $2 billion on an expansion fee. Are teams really so profitable that to pay that amount is a good idea?

This is why the notion that these teams lose money laughable. Some make more than others, maybe even a lot more, but none of them are actually losing anything.

  19. A) I haven’t bothered reading the whole thread so I’m sorry if any of this has been beaten to death

    B) This isn’t really a novel idea. Other franchises have done it for years.

    C) Even during the first years, the crowd was mixed for any “original six” game as most season ticket holders were fans of those teams before Buffalo had a team. It got a lot more intense when Montreal or Toronto came to town because the fans of those teams could get pretty nasty with each other.

    D) This may have crossed TPEGS desk, but it definitely didn’t originate with him. I’m not sure he even knew it was possible.

    E) The crowds in 2005/2006 and 2006/2007 weren’t much different. In fact, because those tickets cost me only $39 back then, I would sell all the Montreal and Toronto tickets and paid for almost my entire season.
