Mitts is an interesting case because if he wants to stay he will have to sign for less then he will be able to get elsewhere. Also,  I think Buffalo would like to keep the term around 3 years.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Powers signed any day for Sanderson money but I wouldn’t get on it at this point.

I guess I should have bet on it.

I guess. So was he this rich (sorry) in 02 and 03? OSP (also on the list) had to rescue the franchise?

He was top 250 in America worth about $1.5B when he tried to enter the major leagues. Between death of his father, fairly significant worldwide growth of his family business and an economic climate that has seen the very, very rich get richer, he is where he is.

Ahhh, the older brother of Red Green (I’m not joking). I knew there had to be someone. But wow, a 4 year career got him into the hall.

And bonus points for paying in two countries.

There has to be a story there. Not only was his career short, it was mediocre. His one year coaching career was even worse.

I did find that he was instrumental in getting players playoff pay so maybe this was nod to the unions. This is something my brain wants me to spend time on.

They hide guys in the AHL all the time.  That’s one reason why NHL teams now own their AHL  teams.  It’s a way to control a player without using up one of the 50 contract slots.  If Metsa proves NHL ready, the Sabres buy his contract from the Amerks.

The Amerks are owned by the Sabres, how on Earth can Ottawa (for example) just swoop in an take an Amerk on an AHL deal without first coming to a trade or other compensation agreement essentially with the Sabres?

If the Amerks were owned by someone else and only affiliated with the Sabres, then in theory they could sell their AHL signed players to another team, but I doubt that would go over well with the Sabres.

Think back to when the Sabres and Panthers shared an AHL affiliate.  There were three groups of players on that team; Sabres prospects, Panthers prospects and AHL signed players.  When the affiliation ended the AHL players remained with the AHL team and all the NHL prospects were moved to their new AHL teams.

The key is who owns the AHL franchise.  As of a few years ago at least 20 of the 32 AHL teams were NHL owned.  The Chicago Wolves are the only completely independent team with no affiliation.

AHL contracts always had stipulation that contract would not prevent a player from signing an NHL contract with another team. It’s simple contract language. As you said, NFL practice squad contracts allow players to be poached all the time.

I can get definitive answer in the next couple weeks but I know that as late as 2019, AHL contracts did not prevent a player from bolting to another organization for an NHL contract.

Like Shrader says, google doesn’t help current situation but goes speak to past agreements. I’m not going to make a phone call to prove I’m right, it maybe wrong but next time I see someone that will definitively know, I’ll ask. Like I said, it may have been changed.

No they can't.  They have an AHL contract.  The AHL team can trade them to another AHL team and then the parent can acquire the contract, but (for example) Ott can't sign Metsa out from under the Sabres.  This isn't the NFL practice squad.

Unless it was changed in the last year, you are wrong. It’s always been exactly like the practice squad. Otherwise teams could hide guys with AHL contracts if they were over their contract limit.

No he can't.  He is either going to play the season in Rochester or his contract will be purchased by the Sabres.  Those are his two options.   His contract with the Amerks is for 2 years.

I am not sure this is correct. I believe that he can sign with anyone although I don’t believe it has happened in awhile.

My wife and I are going to the season opener. I found the following in the emails from TicketMaster:

    "Important Event Info
KEYBANK CENTER BAG POLICY: ALL BAGS, BACKPACKS, AND PURSES ARE PROHIBITED"

We have not attended a Sabres game for several years. Is this a new policy and do they enforce it? Thanks in advance.

I’m pretty sure this is standard at most venues throughout the country since 9/11.

    Cool.

Also, guess it was in the Snooze sometime this past week or 2, but Sabres themselves say there are over 10k ST.  (Presumably that's equivalents when 1/2 & 1/4 ST packages are included, but not positive of that.)

Yeah, I think that does include partials but that’s a significant improvement over last year. They haven’t sold out an opener in four years but they have less then 800 for this one so it’s a marked improvement

You’ve said for months they have a long term deal agreed to with Dahlin and have refused to come off of that. Is this you saying they don’t?

I’m not really sure what happened there but I could guess. They agreed on term and we’re close enough to call it done around mid-June.  Something seems to have changed but I’ll disagree with Peter’s, it’s not acrimonious and I still believe it gets signed very soon.

I was more so looking for specifics.  I might agree or disagree with you.  I have no idea.  Your proclamations are too vague.

If your only point is that the cap will go up, yeah, we know.  Publicly rumored to be going up $4-5M each of the next two offseason.

I think we agree more than we don’t. You might be a year behind but the numbers are close.  Casey is an interesting situation. If he has a big year he will have to take less then market rate to stay with Buffalo.

You can’t sign everyone and you definitely can’t give him more then Tage.

  13. 2 minutes ago, Curt said:

Oh, I do recall you repeating it ad nauseum, please believe that.

What do you mean by “approaching” though?  Is that $95M?, $99M?

And 5 years?  Is that the 2028-29 season?

Perhaps Power is considering a shorter deal as opposed to 6+ years for this reason.  I have no idea.

It means that with their top two centers locked up with below market deals, and a pipeline full of prospects that will be at low cap contracts for 3-6 years, the Sabres will have plenty of cap space to sign guys to market deals.

In summary, If the team has any cap issues at any point between now and 2029-2030, they screwed up royally.

Recent D who were drafted top-5, played like #1 D in the making, and then signed 6+ year extensions of off their ELC’s; they have generally signed for 10-11% of the cap.  This is guys like Doughty, Ekbland, Pieterangelo, Heiskanen, Makar.

The cap is 83.5 this coming season, and rumored to be going up to 87-88M the next.

So maybe if Power plays very well this season and the cap goes up to $88M, maybe he could get close to $9.5M max on a 6+ year extension, but that would be the true max max that I think is even plausible.

As I’ve said ad nauseum, the cap will approach $100M within five years. It is the true reason guys are considering Matthew’s lead and not comitting to 7 and 8 year deals. It doesn’t hurt that players have better leadership as well.
This was the last year Buffalo had to take advantage of their cap space and so far, they have chosen not to. Time will tell if they made the right move.

It looks like we are down to 33 players remaining in camp

    20 forwards, 10 defense, and 3 goalies

The 20 forwards breakdown as follows - 12 NHL vets, 3 AHL vets (Biro, Rousek, and Murray), 2 AHL kids (Kulich and Rosen), and 2 CHL prospects (Benson & Savoie).

The D breakdown as follows - 8 NHL vets, 1 NHL/AHL vet (Clague), and rookie Ryan Johnson.

The 3 goalies are the returnees from last season (Levi, UPL, and Comrie).

    The Roster questions remain"

    1) Who gets Quinn's slot - Rousek (waiver exempt), Biro (must clear), Murray (must clear), Kulich (waiver exempt), Rosen (waiver exempt), Savoie (injured and goes back to the CHL) or Benson (CHL bound if he doesn't win the job).  Right now Benson or Biro seem like the front runners.

    2) How many D will we carry and can Ryan Johnson earn an NHL job in camp?  The top 6 are set leaving Stillman, Bryson, Clague and Johnson (waiver exempt) to fight for 1 maybe 2 slots.  I think Johnson starts in Rochester, but he has looked very poised with the puck.

    3) Will we carry 2 or 3 goalies and who is the primary backup to Levi? Comrie has looked better in camp so far.

Are you including Quinn in your 30 forwards or am I missing someone?  Your forward breakdown equals 19.

I wonder how much ST & box office prices have gone up in the last 5-6 years?   After 12 years of crap, fans need more than “look at all our prospects”.

Only winning will bring the fans back in numbers.

I don’t remember the last 5-6 years but since 2005, my seats have gone from $39 each to $108.50 each

Take a look at Ticketmaster.com. Aside from the Rangers home opener (full but not a sellout,) the rest of September is looking like last year. 4-6K unsold seats per game. And I'm taking about box office, not resales. (Resale tickets are wayyy down.)

    This is the Calgary game:

13K to 15K a game would be a huge improvement over last year, especially for October. The team has always struggled selling tickets till football season ends.
