I had noticed Ras had been very quiet this summer and thought it was kinda weird he wasn’t on the podium yesterday.

That is crazy! The list for a new heart is very long, luckily she was young and healthy and had some connections in the background. Rehab will take some time and there is still a life to live on immunosupressants. But considering the worst case scenario, this is a huge victory for Her.

I can't believe he is here. I mean this with absolutely zero judgement on Rasmus. But if this was my wife and I had "never work again money" you would be hard pressed to get me back to "the office". 

It certainly takes a lot of strength and resolve to show up to work thousands of miles away from your recovering wife.

I’d be interested in yours and other MDs’ in the forum opinions on the differences between the American and European systems when it comes to organ donations, etc. I only know that Spain’s is considered an excellent system.

Wow!  That is crazy...thank goodness they were able to get help for her and the procedure done.  For Rasmus, I can't imagine this is not going to have long lasting effects on his mental state because it's not like she is going to be able to lead a normal life after this, and I cannot blame him one bit...nobody would be.  It's going to be a tough road for both of them I am guessing.

This is horrifying -- they're kids! I'm really happy she was able to get immediate treatment, and a transplant, and that they'll have the means to provide her with continuing care. I hope she makes a full recovery and a full, healthy road ahead.

Unimaginable.  Life is not supposed to be this fragile for young people.  
Not that I needed another reason to root for Ras, but holy smokes I’m keeping him and his fam in my thoughts.  I’ll also be donating $26 to his foundation and rooting for both him and Carolina. God speed.

Seemed rather fast she got one then, she probably got rushed to the top of the list as well.   We often see organs come in and go at the airport here.

Always found it rather strange that most go and come from the balkans from and to here.

Why won't she be able to lead a normal or nearly normal (wtf we're defining "normal" as) life after this?  Presumably she received a healthy heart and she is still in her 20s which is when people are at their physical peaks (unless of course they're professional tennis players, in which case you seem to reach your peak later or female gymnasts who's peaks seem to hit in their late teens 😉 ). 

But it absolutely is a tremendously scary story.  Am glad that she seems to be pulling through and am very glad they had people around that were able to keep her alive when she was at her frailest.

Lots of reasons why she might not be able to lead a normal life.  My BIL had double lung transplant this past Spring.  Yes, he’s alot older than she is, but the anti rejection drugs, and the immune system suppressors will significantly reduce things she can do that you and I don’t even think about.  Like, minor every day things that become no-nos because of the drugs.

Obviously, I don’t know a damn thing about her situation.  Grains of salt, and all that.  But my eyes were definitely opened to all of the changes necessitated by major organ transplants.  And the risk of rejection somewhere down the line is always there, even with the drugs.
