Jonas Johansson Traded to Colorado for 2021 6th Round Pick

I hate this trade.

JJ has improved at every level, he's obviously not NHL ready yet, but he's only 25.

We probably won't here his name for a few years, but and some point I wouldn't be surprised if he matures into an above average NHLer.

A sixth round pick can be good. Mark Stone and Andres Lee as examples.

A 6th round pick in the NHL is basically nothing, almost always.

But as you say, there are exceptions.

It's basically currency to be bundled with other forms of currency, so in that sense, it can have some value.

Is he better then UPL? Will he be better then UPL long-term?  I'd argue that it's close right now and that UPL is the better talent and will soon be the better goaltender with significantly more upside.

JJ isn't even better then Hutton.

So where does JJ fit here?  UPL is now the starter in Roch this season and next.  Ullmark is the starter in the NHL and Togarski is our Expansion eligible goalie and backup in Roch in a normal season.  KA is going to replace Hutton next season with a seasoned NHLer and either bring back Ullmark or try to upgrade him.  Now add the Portillo is a season or two from turning pro.  That leaves JJ no where.  Hopefully he'll go to Colorado and become UIlmark 2.0.

... I'd take that bet. He'll be a below average backup at best

I think Cam Atkinson was a 6th rounder also, right?

Normally, 6ths aren't worth much. Heck, once you get out of the first, you are lucky to get a good player.  But, with some exceptions, it is a lottery ticket.  The odds of you getting a quality starter might be 100-1, an all star 1000-1....but those thing DO happen and the more lotter tickets you have, the better.

Heck, I'd take a few extra 6th or 7th rounders each year and throw them at the best college or european goalie that my scout say is left on the board.....if only the Sabres had any real scouts left...

They drafted him 7 years ago and developed him slowly, working his way up the ranks, SHL, ECHL, AHL, AHL all-star, etc.. developing like a goalie prospect should.... and now he's gone, some other team gets to reap the rewards of all the resources BUF put into his development.   And we keep Carter Hutton.   SMH

I woulda put JJ back in Roch with UPL.   Tokarski backing up Hutton with Ullmark out, and Houser on taxi squad.

Trading a goalie prospect you developed for a late round draft pick.  This is going to help do what?

This wastes the ability to include JJ in the package of a bigger deal that might actually help make them better now.

They got at least SOMETHING for a pending UFA who was not in their plans.  Hard to argue that.  If he was any good he'd already have played a ton of NHL games, but he has not yet developed and likely won't.
