Serious question for those saying the man who threw the punch in Dallas was in the wrong:  would your answer change if he were African-American?  Or if his wife and/or kids were?

No.  The correct response is still to get an usher or security.  Violence to fend off nasty words is just not how society works.

Society doesn’t work that way.

I agree. However, I wasn't commenting on society as a whole, I was commenting on a specific 23 second video in which a grown man called another grown man a dumb ass ni**er an was held accountable by way of a punch to the face. Was it assault? Yes. Was it justified? Yes. Is that acceptable? Yes. You and some others don't see it that way, that's fine. Agree to disagree.

Fair questions, but no.  I could understand it creating a stronger urge to punch him in the face, but it wouldn’t make to act any more right.

For me, it’s against the law, so it wasn’t the right thing to do.  At the same time, the guy “deserved” it.  I think both of those things can be true.

Society operates on rules.  You can’t just punch anyone in the face because they offend you.

Again, I'm commenting on a specific 23 second video, not society as a whole.

The rules of society as a whole also apply to that 23 second video.

Why wouldn’t they?

I'm not going to try to change your mind on this, and your not going to change mine. We see it differently, that's okay. Let's move on.

Ok.  Just fyi, I’m not at all heated on this.  Just attempting a friendly discussion.  Hope I wasn’t coming across as aggressive.

No, you're good. I just don't have anything more to say about it. I agree with you in principle, but I also like the immediate accountability for *****. I know, and accept, that the punch was illegal but also don't think he was wrong to do it.

It WAS the wrong thing to do.  But it's good that sometimes there are people like the big guy that do the wrong thing because maybe the next rocket surgeon that's going to act like an entitled weenie will think twice before acting like an entitled weenie.  Society as a whole is better when people remember that when in public they should ask themselves SHOULD this be done not CAN this be done.

But, to your 1st sentence, 2 things:

1 - per our resident Texan, that punch likely wasn't illegal.  &

2 - just because something is illegal, it isn't necessarily wrong.  There are all sorts of unjust laws on the books in various places.

I have been a proponent of the 3-1-0 system for probably two decades and this is the first clear statement of why it never will happen, that I've seen.  You are right on.  It works in soccer because of the relegation battles at the bottom, but the NHL doesn't have that.  Great succinct analysis!

This why EPL for example is exciting, because you have a race for the top and a race at the bottom to stay in the league.

Imagine if a team starts so poorly that within 10 games fans see that it’s over and they lose interest. 3 points for a win and a team goes 1-9 vs another team who goes 9-1 and they’re 24 back just like that. The NHL loves their “seemingly” close races for the playoffs.

So there’s no obligation, or at least an attempt, to de-escalate? We just start swinging because we feel like the words he used, “deserved it?”

Neither of these people are well-adjusted adults. Like, grow up.

I would say they did try to de-escalate the situation by ignoring him/not yelling back at him. It used to be that they tell you just ignore people like that. IIRC, he even tells the big guy to come down and hit him, and he got hit. Then he starts crying that he got hit.

Tell me how it ends if the heavyweight doesn’t throttle the lightweight with an unexpected punch…never mind, I’ll do it.
The skinny scumbag gets escorted out.

The heavyweight was not in any physical danger. Keep your ***** hands to yourself.

Has the person been arrested?  That's all I am looking at for right and wrong here.  If the person who throws the punch is not charged, then it was not considered a crime and therefore not in violation of the law or the rules.

It's not really for us to say what is and is not allowed. There is clear video evidence here. Either that person will be charged or they will not.

Yellowstone says there’s a difference between the law and justice. You are touching on that here I believe

Whether I agree with what happened, or not - I hate the turn of phrase but what that guy did mostly falls under “f*ck around and find out”.

Agree that according to the law you can’t just throw out that punch. Don’t agree as was intimated elsewhere above that in cases where there is “no charge” there was no lawful infraction committed. Even with full faith in the Law itself whether or not it is always being accurately enforced is a whole other matter. Anyways, that’s all I got on this.
