Josh Gorges -- A Keeper?

Continuing with the defense, today it's Gorges.

Not great on offense

Not a punishing hitter

Making almost 4 million a year

And just not an all around great player

But the dude can block shots, box forwards out and if you watched Chad Ruhwedel the other night in Pittsburgh-Caps game you should be somewhat happy we have him.

Best possible case would be him as our 7th dman but he will probably be higher than that if he is healthy. Hopefully we get a flood of talent at defense in off season but I doubt it.

Thoughts?

Uh no...we need good players not a "locker room guy" on defense...dude was not any of the years he was here ,being another year older is only going to cause a decline from there if anything

And like d4rk has been saying about Gio, if our locker room is as bad as reported, maybe these "locker room guys" actually aren't that good in there.

Gorges is an okay stay-at-home #4 defenseman, but according to his player usage, he gets the hardest minutes among defensmen on the team (strongest opponents and highest % of defensive zone starts). That's not who he is or what he's capable of, so he struggles. Because he plays against the league's best night-in-night-out, he appears slow, weak, and inconsistent, but it'd likely be far worse if you plugged in someone else in the current roster (for instance, Franson; Risto gets similar usage as Gorges, but he's capable and improving). It'd be far better for Gorges performance and the team performance to find someone else capable of this role.

$4M is fair pay for what the Sabres are asking Gorges to do every night, but it's a little high for what the Sabres should be asking him to do every night.

Gorges is suffering the same fate as Robyn Regehr. Regehr was an alright stay-at-home #3 defenseman in his later years who got beaten like a rented mule with extremely hard player usage by Ruff, because he was the unfortunate best defensive option on a weak roster. Fans turned on Regehr because they thought he sucked. I never hated much on Regehr during his decline- his usage was the result of the GM not building a complete roster.

If the new GM doesn't improve the back end of the roster, Gorges will go the way of Regehr. And maybe that shouldn't be the case. Gorges is serviceable in some role on a contender.

Also we can't replace four defensemen in a single offseason.

Lol this thread is unreal. GET RID OF HIM. Bury him in rochester, buy him out, trade him for a bag of pucks, just get rid of him. People complain about #21 OA for Lehner yet say nothing about a second round pick for Gorges. He's a train wreck in his own end and attributes nothing to offense. And wait, theres more... $3.9m a year.

No argument here. Lose the bum.

Wasnt he the worst statistical D in the league last season?

Very very close to the bottom among all D that played any meaningful amount of minutes.

This might have been true 2.5 years ago. He's absolutely toast wherever he plays. He needs to be in the AHL next season, I don't want to see a single minute of NHL action from him next season.
