2017 NHL Draft -- General NHL Thread

Steve Patrick was one Scotty Bowman's finest drafting moments (second only to the immortal Jiri Dudacek)

James Patrick came a crossbar away from sending Buffalo to the cup final.

Steve's son and James' nephew is our destiny.

I have been a huge advocate for D first, but what if we trade Kane for a top 3 D like Vatanen (Age 26).  If you add him to a Antipin (24), Guhle (20), Bogo (27), Risto (23) and McCabe (24) you have an average D age of 24.  Not exactly the over the hill gang.  This would be a thrilling result for the off-season.   It would give us a young and dynamic group of D and allow us to let D prospects like Borgen and Fitzgerald time to develop properly.  It also takes away the urgency of getting a Makar or Miko in the first rd.

However, it may create a need to get a LW.  In fact trading Kane leaves us with no top 6 NHL LW.  Nylander is unlikely going to be ready, therefore trading Kane leaves the LW in the hands of Carrier, Foligno, Ennis and maybe Larsson or Girgensons.  Not exactly a group to fear.

Assuming we trade Kane and we don't win the lottery, I'm trading down to 12 or so and grabbing Vesalainen.  I loved his game in the U18.  He has size speed and hands and likes to score around the net.  He'd be a perfect Kane replacement long-term.  Then we can utilize our collection of 2nds and the assets we get for trading down and then work back into the 1st rd to get Nick Hague, A excellent skating 6'6" D.

your point of trading Kane leaves us with a very uninspiring left side is a big factor in trading Kane...I just think we either have to re-sign him to a long term contract ASAP or trade him...we cannot afford to not sign him then lose him to free agency ALA briere and Drury moves that I still lament to this day. at this point Kane is a big asset and we must use that in a good way

Tough to trade down in the NHL draft as is much less in a draft where consensus says that the picks from 10 to 40 are not separated by much.  A 5th or sixth rounder isn't likely to move the needle for a gm to move down.  We will pick where we land, and I don’t think we are trading it.

The Sabres have 5 picks in the first 3 rounds (currently 6, 38, 58, 69 & 93).  This is a great deal of ammo to move up and down in a draft.  Despite some even "ratings" certain teams like certain players and will work to move up to get those players.  For example, someone may covet RW Owen Tippett who is still available to us at no.6 however our new GM is looking for a D or LW, but Makar and Miro are already gone.  Carolina at 11, also has 3 2nd rd picks.  To move up to 6th Carolina would have to give us their 2nd and one of the later 2nds.

Now with 4 2nds our new GM can trade two of the them to get back into the end of the 1st and fill a second need.

This kind of draft is the perfect type of draft for a great deal of movement.

If we handle this properly and come away with both Vesalainen and a Hague, we'll have drafted the Kane and eventual Bogo replacements.  I believe that Vesalainen has a NHL body already and might need as little as one more year before being NHL ready.

Now imagine in 2018-19 a top 9 of

Nylander Eichel Baptiste

Vesalainen ROR Okposo

Carrier Reinhart Bailey

Slightly off topic from your post, is Vegas getting an extra pick @ the end of the 1st? I'd've expected the Sabres' 2nd & 3rd round selections to be 37 & 68 respectively.

I was playing around with the tankathon lottery simulator.  I rolled the dice 50 times and the results aren't pretty.

We improved (1-3) - 13 times

Stayed the same (6) - 5 times

Fell to 7th - 16 times

Fell to 8th - 15 times

Fell to 9th - 1 time

Fell to 7-9 - Total 32 times - 60%+ chance of falling.  Yick!.

I wonder how close these results are to the stated odds?  Edit: Found them!

I'm going to be a homer and say we have two top 7 and possibly two top 4 picks from Winnipeg. I think Patrick goes first and Glass goes top 7 for sure and maybe even 4th.

Patrick

Hischier

Vilardi

Glass

I also think after the 2nd or 3rd pick, it will depend a LOT on the team drafting. One team might want to go for D men while others might want centers or best palyer available. It isn't a strong draft and I wouldn't mind seeing the Jets move down or involved in a trade for a 1LHD or 2LHD with their 1st pick.

Could be a trade option for Sabres if the guy they want is on the board at 6. Sabres have 2 2nds and 2 3rds. Extra draft picks may be what the expansion team is looking for?

Yes they've said teams are traditionally built through the draft and they'll be open to that.

Why do we want to trade up in what is suppose to be a ###### draft? Next year is suppose to be loaded. Either trade 8 as part of package for dman or trade 8 for a first next year if you can.

Better shot at Makar or Heinesken.

Lilligren should be there, but he did not have a great U-18. The draft lacks a true difference maker at the top, but there is some talent to be had
