Prior to that he was "undersized" and "injury-prone". Just the Sabres curse that the NHL has evolved back to a speed game while we developed a slow, heavy team, thanks to GMTM's vision. Given the Brett Hull and Denis Savard Feuds there is a concern about how he meshes with Jack but those guys were established superstars whereas Jack is still a wannabe at this point. From a possession standpoint, Eichel has improved in Corsi-for percentage, as well as goals-for percentage. His relative goals-for has leapt from .85 to 15.24, which is an incredible jump for a player on a team that is spiraling wildly out of playoff contention. Eichel is also near the top of the team in shot rates as a measurement of Corsi percentages. Again, the chart provided by Tierney shows Eichel and Pouliot neck-and-neck, leading Buffalo’s forwards. It is little surprise that these two are scoring above expectation given the success in shot rates. Head coach Phil Housley has certainly taken notice of Eichel’s performance, and has increased his ice time by almost 45 seconds per night. For the first time since his career began, he is leading all forwards in average time on ice, which indicates this coach and management staff see him as the No. 1 center; a position formerly held by Ryan O’Reilly. The projection for the Sabres was Cup contention three seasons after Eichel’s arrival. Unfortunately, former GM Tim Murray either didn’t have a solid plan, or didn’t have enough time to execute said plan. There is evidence that the team could see success in the coming seasons. Handfuls of Murray imports and draft picks are driving a red-hot Rochester Americans team this season. It is also true, however, that Murray failed to develop a core around Eichel that went deeper than the line that he plays on.
