I didn’t think Alex was good at the WJC last year, despite good numbers.

The previous year however, he was excellent.

I wonder if the injury was affecting him.

It might have been, but it wasn't a lingering injury that gave him the primary assist on Belarus' only goal against the Swedes. It was a total brainfart & he has far too many of those.

Maybe a change of scenery is what he needs.

He was sitting around looking pretty useless today.

It is this exact thread that gives me pause about ROR as a leader.  Yes, I know it's about his brother.  Yes, I know none of this has been corroborated.  The story makes complete sense to me and it explains why COR was unceremoniously dumped to a rival for a bag of pucks mid-season.  Turns out COR is kind of a douche and a terrible leader.  The kind of guy who looks like a good guy to management who aren't with him every day and don't really interact with him personally in a meaningful manner, I'm sure you know the type at your job.  They say the right things publicly and the boss thinks they are awesome but they are the snake in the grass who is only out for themselves.  Well, COR got handed a role where he had to interact with a young kid that management valued.  Why wouldn't they choose him. He's a great guy right?  On the surface, it makes complete sense to pick him. So Nylander not only has to interact with this guy every day, he is living with him.  He is around him nearly 24/7 and that's when a guy's true colors come out. When management discovered how much he'd mucked that relationship up and how much of a dick he truly was they sent him out on the next bus.  Again, I take Nylander's side here because if Nylander were the problem, COR as the trusted vet could have gone to management about issues he was having with the kid, etc.  Instead, COR got dumped.  Loaned, for nothing, to the freaking Marlies of all teams.

Now to ROR - he's won tournaments with Team Canada sure, but look at those rosters.  How much leading did he really need to do?  Plus, they are short term tournaments.  It's a rare douchebag who can't be tolerated for 2-3 weeks and, if others have suggested, ROR is a fake sort of person that sort of thing wouldn't get noticed in that time span.  You know, sort of like his older brother, who also turned out to be a closet douchebag.

Maybe all of this is BS and ROR is a great guy but when you start adding up his career signing a RFA deal with Calgary forcing Colorado's hand (the last RFA offer sheet to be signed BTW), then forcing Colorado's hand again when his next contract came up.  Now he's talking in the media about losing his passion for the game.  He's not an idiot.  He's been a master during his whole career of setting up situations for himself to get what he wants (at least in terms of compensation). He knows how that looks.  That's a player trying to get traded without coming out and saying "trade me".  A "good guy" wouldn't say trade me.  Bad guys do that.  ROR is very good at not looking like the bad guy, even when he drunk drives into a restaurant he comes out scot free and smelling like roses.

Not sure what other Nylander threads are around, but thought I would put this in one:

So now that Nyls has had a year to recover from COR do you think we will see a better Nylander?

No, and the fact that that's even a sentence is absurd to me IMO. Was COR not good for him? Obviously not. But talking about any sort of 'recovery' from being hazed like that or whatever is wild to me

beg to differ, been in bad work environments where as a result didnt perform at my best despite trying. It made me tougher, but not a better worker.  Learned how to ignore the noise and id people to stay away from. What we dont know is how much of it is Alex's ability and how much this effected his play and trust me it did.

Took some time feel unburdened, but I became aware of my true abilities once out of those situations.  We shall see, but I sensed at the end of the year Alex may be starting to take that next step.

Nylander is very high on the list of Sabres I am curious to see if Krueger can have an effect on.

The way he reads the game is not dissimilar to Reinhart’s. I’m interested in seeing what he could do in Sam’s slot with Jack and Jeff.

And if it contributed to a genuine mental health problem? What then?

What is Cal O'Reilly doing to someone that could be that detrimental

Hazing in general can have very real negative psychological effects. And that's normal workplace or team-based hazing. They were living together. I just wouldn't dismiss out of hand the possibility of real damage being done.

Now, I'm not about to pump Nylander's tires as our answer to anything simply because COR has been gone for a longer period of time. Just saying that recovering from an abusive relationship of any kind isn't like flipping a light switch.

Just for completeness -- here's the rest of the 1st round.

In fairness to XGMTM, the hit rate dropped off quite a bit in this round.  Still -- Sergachev, Jost, McAvoy and Chychrun were drafted between #9 and #16.

And other guys on that list are just now turning pro, kind of like what Nylander should have been doing (and on the same note, Thompson as well).

@dudacek has mentioned it many times, but we'd all feel so much better about Nylander if he had spent the past two years putting up numbers in Sweden or the CHL.

Thompson definitely sucks though. He took my O'Reilly bear away from me 😭

I tend to agree, at the end of the season he looked to be much more pro ready. I'd like to see him as a top 6 winger, hope the kid really comes in to camp with Olofsson and they show they are ready.

I think I’m just being hopeful with significant ice time. That and I I think the raw talent is there it just needs to click. Maybe the right line combo will bring out the best in him.

Well look on the bright side, we didn't move up to draft O.Juolevi like someone kept begging for.

So I don’t recall posting about the game notes interview where Alex talked about the bus thing as an intent to defend his performance. I’ve been both critical and supportive.

I’ve always thought Cal was an ass. Never liked his presence. I’m sure Alex isn’t an idiot and saw him for the Ahole he appears to be. Are we going to blame Cal for the seasonal injury the kid suffers? Second year in a row with all sorts of missed time.

I like the kid but step back at look at it....

I hate that return in the ROR trade but you gotta let it go man.

I'll let it go once Botterill fixes the hole he blasted in the roster. Plenty of GMs make bad trades, recover, and ice a winning roster. Let's see Botterill do it.
