Kane skates with the top 20% of the league, grinds with the top 20% of the league and scores goals with the top 20% of the league. Yes he's a douche. So is Patty Kane.

Yet there are people who wouldn't take him for a bucket of pucks. None of them are GMs.

Evander is far from perfect, but I think he may have become the most underrated hockey player on the internet

I want Evander Kane as a Sabre, but to even think of him in Pat Kane terms, other than off-ice stupidity (they seem to mimic each other there), is, umm, no.  Stretch.  Big stretch.

I just think he has no hockey sense and his hurt a ton. Plus I don't believe he resigns here.

He gets to the right places, but if you mean playmaking/puck moving, I agree.

That's why he'll never be a true first liner. He's a pretty damn good as your fifth forward though.

You talk to him about re-signing. If he's lukewarm, or cagey, you move him.

Absolutely. Evander is above-average, Patty is elite.

I was talking about off-ice stupidity.

If only Sabres could have such problems. Showing some ring rust after years of top shelf play and multiple Stanley Cups, but still being one of the top teams in the league. Sigh!!!

they had a few lean years

Between 1967 and 1983, Detroit only made the playoffs twice, winning one series

They have been around alot longer than the Sabres and had alot of recent playoff success but they went 50+ years between division titles and 40 years between stanley cup wins. Sabres have a ways to go to match that futility.

My mistake, they already gave em a run for Stanley Cups, since its been 47 years without one for the Sabres ????

No way is Kaner worth close to 6m x5. Who would sign him to that? He's be lucky to get 4.5m x 5.

He has scored over 50 points once in his career and that was 5 years ago on a team that didn't preach D. His highest total since is 41 points. JVR has 40 points already this season and makes 4.25m per year. Kreider makes 4.625m. No way Kaner gets anywhere near 6m x 5.

Well, I think we need to compare apples to apples here.  Of the players in these posts that I'd rather have than Kaner (Kreider, Barkov and Leddy), none have hit UFA status.

I agree that $6MM per year is a bit rich, but if he stays healthy and out of trouble between now and the time he signs his next contract, I would be very surprised if he gets less than $5.5MM per year.

Kane blows out everyone else in the deal, Sabres win. He'll get $6 per and earn it.

Staf has missed about 20 games with a concussion and other ailments and won't be re-signed here. What does he have anything to do with Kaner's next deal??? Really?

How's Bogo working out? Kasdorf?

6m for a guy that puts up points and goals, regardless of the nominal "line" he plays on.

Not!

In Kane's career he has average .30 goals per game and .295 assists per game.  In a full season (82 games) Kane numbers say he should score 25 goals and 24 assists.  49 pts @ 5.25 mill per season wouldn't seem out of wack, but the problem is Kane never plays a full schedule.  He has only once in his career played an entire season and that was the strike shortened season.   So far in his career Kane has played in 467 games of the 592 played by his team or 79%.  His best season of 30 goals and 27 assists was in 2011-12 or over 5 years ago.

That stat translates to just under 65 games per season and 20 goals and 19 assists. (He played 65 games last year with 20 goals and 15 assists). Do really feel like paying $6 mill for 39 pts a season? I don't and I don't think GMTM will either.

Remember we just signed Okposo to $6 mill per season, who has averaged 22g and 40 assists over the last 3 season and is on  pace this season for 26 goals and 27 assists.  Who would rather pay $6 mill to?

If Murray trades Kane, I'm immediately turning in my fan card.

I don't see Kane getting moved unless the deal directly addresses either a #2 or a #3/4 defensive player. If it's a #2 consider it a gift from the hockey gods.

If its a 3/4 guy (I consider McCabe a solid #3) there will most likely be depth in some form coming with it.

If re-signing is actually considered, and I believe it should be, price and length of term are concerns. Kane is a solid 2nd line LW'er, of which we don't have any depth for that position.......yet.

But if he is re-signed, his deal kicks in when he'll be 27 years old. The way he plays a longterm deal of 6 years or more is unthinkable, and he is almost certainly going to want to get paid.

I'd look at 3 years, 5.5 million max.

But I think Murray moves him.

If the Sabres want to bring in a #2,#3,#4 defenseman then they need to concentrate on re-signing Kulikov. Nobody has seen what he is capable of because of his injury (he has been steadily improving) but he is, at worst, a #3. I've seen Kulikov play for years, he's worth holding on to. Keeping players you already have allows you to avoid trading valuable players to fill those spots which in turn allows Murray to hold on to Kane.

Contract terms have been compared to Okposo and what he is worth. One, Okposo chose term over $$. If he settled for less term he would have made more per year elsewhere. Two, Kane brings more intangibles to the game than Okposo. I've seen the comparison above as far as points and goals per 82 games between Kane and Okposo. That's a tough comparison to make because Kane was stuck in Winnipeg while Okposo was playing with Tavares. I think Okposo is a very smart, consistent player with a great work ethic. I also think he's reached his ceiling. Kane on the other hand, I don't think has reached his ceiling. If you put the two in similar situations, on the same team, Kane is going to outperform Okposo............. and he is. Okposo doesn't have the speed and the physical attributes that Kane has. That OT goal that Kane scored tonight, Okposo could never do that.

Lucic was brought in to pretty much protect McDavid, while having some offensive abilities to make that line work. There isn't anybody else on this team that can be put on a line with Eichel who can keep up with his speed, score goals on a regular basis and protect him when needed, like Kane can.

I think Sabres fans tend to undervalue their players. Many here see Kane as a top 6. I would bet if Kane were traded, 75% of the teams, if not more, would make him a top 3. He's more valuable to this team than many give him credit for.

Focus on signing Kulikov and getting Kane an extension.

Generally agree, except for Kane's off the ice crap and his injury hx.  That being said he seems like he has settled down lately and we are seeing him focused which is really kinda special.
