Here's the twist-- as if that wasn't bad enough, the "Support Specialist" gave me the username and password used to register for the website (gee, thanks)... and whoever signed up used a username and password that I use on a couple other websites. So it seems that this goes much deeper than just having my credit card information... they could potentially have access to my entire life. E-Mail, YouTube, my online bank account, other message boards, who knows what.

 

My guess would be they've used some kind of key logger on me... in which case I'm probably ######. Currently running virus/malware/spyware scanners on the MacBook but nothing suspicious has come up so far. I have no idea how else they could have gotten that information, but trying to fix this all today is going to be a bitch.

 

More likely one of those sites that you're using the same login info for got hacked and doesn't know it yet or hasn't notified you. Realistically, you should never use the same password on multiple sites. You and I know that's really difficult, however. I ran into a false alarm awhile back[0] and went thru a password change drill. I've been using a tool called SuperGenPass. The concept is that you use a master password and the site's domain to generate a random-looking password for each site. Every site has a different password, but you only have to remember the master (or, better yet a couple masters; one for banking, one for social stuff, etc.). There is some question that the hash it uses isn't *that* strong, so if someone figures out what you're doing it may be possible to find your master password. I'm figuring that I'm making it difficult enough that they'll move on to the person using 'passw0rd' for all their accounts instead of cracking my master password. I suppose that the site could be logging all this as well despite denying that they do, so caveat emptor.

 

Give it a try, punch in a couple masters and sites to see how it works.

There's also and Android app that I have on my phone so it's rare that I can't get to my passwords. There may be other apps, I don't know.

 

[0] I started getting yet legit but strange emails to my gmail account. Looks like at least three people mistakenly used my email when registering for something. I one guy I know his name, address, phone number, and taste in shoes. Another I could probably hijack his Xbox Live account (if I had an Xbox) by claiming I lost my password and please send me a reset link. The last seems to like buying concert tickets for classic rock shows in Ohio (Van Halen, I think among others). So there's my complaint: web sites that don't properly validate email addresses with an activation email.

I hope this isn't too serious, but here goes: my complaint is that good people can be struck out of the blue by a life-altering tragedy.

 

My family is friends with another family in our neighborhood. Their kids attend the same school as our kids, and one of their sons is close friends with my son. We're not super-close with this family, but we've known them for 7-8 years, seen them socially a few times now and then (including hanging out and watching a Sabres-Bruins playoff game a couple of years ago) and regard them as friends.

 

The school is on spring break now, so many families naturally take vacations. This family went to a Caribbean island. Last Sunday (i.e. 4 days ago), the family was at the beach and the father was swimming with one of the boys (they have 4 sons in their family). A motorboat comes flying into the area where they are swimming, hits the father, chews him up in the propeller, and just like that, the father is killed -- right there in front of his horrified family.

 

I wasn't really close with him, but I considered him a friend and respected him. He was a really good guy. Solid as a f----- rock. The kind of guy who would come and get you in the middle of the night if your car broke down. He was 44 and a totally devoted father -- he coached his kids' teams, etc. And they had a really nice family. Now his 4 sons (ages 14, 12, 10 and 8) have to grow up without a father because of some reckless idiot with a motorboat.

 

It's heartbreaking.

 

This is so sad :( :(

 

So irritating. There's always the two or three seventy-year-old naked dudes who find it necessary to have a conversation in the locker room corridor, too, meaning that they are in the way of everyone entering, exiting, or trying to get to/from the shower.

 

UGH I know! That's part of the reason I stopped going in the afternoons, because that was when *they* (^) would be there.

Pissed. Decided to check my bank statement online this morning and saw a charge from 3/17 for $40 that I didn't recognize, with a URL listed. I visited the website and sent in an e-mail through their "Contact Us" link, explaining to them that I had no idea what their site was or what the charge was for. They responded by telling me they've "cancelled my subscription" but cannot refund the $40, and went on to inform me that the charge was for membership to an adult entertainment website. Clearly, somebody has gotten ahold of my credit card information.

Yikes, good luck with that... hopefully you've caught on early enough that you can cancel cards and the like before any more fraudulent charges post.

It wouldn't be easy at any age, but just the thought of boys that young being that up close to witness their father die like that really makes me cringe. It's a very minor consolation, but thank god none of the kids were hit too. For someone to lose a father and brother or a husband and son at the same time, that's just cruel.

My complaint is it just went out the window with that story, yeah complaining about not being able to complain.

 

With kids of my own 14, 12 and 10 the two youngest being boys I just say wow.

 

So much more to say and do with them to want to help them on their way in life and .... don't know what you got till it's gone and I'm just going to try and remember that today, tomorrow and make my time count with the important people in my life...

We were about 4 weeks early this year..generally 3rd to last week in March or so. Plus , some of the damn leaves are still clinging to some oaks, so I am still raking leaves

I hate going to the gym somedays. Not because of the waking up at 4/430 AM and whatnot, and not because of the soreness later. No, I actually like both of those. No, instead, I hate the part that comes after the workout: the awkward locker room moments. Take today for example. I walk in there to take a shower so I can get ready to come in to work. There are 4 other men in the entire gym. One of the guys came into the locker room about 30 seconds after me. He had all of his stuff in a bag that he had locked (like a little luggage lock you see at airports).

 

This guy decided he needed a locker while he goes to shower. There are 100 lockers in the room, all of them open, minus the other 3 guys that had lockers...so 97...ok fine. He HAD to pick the locker DIRECTLY next to mine, and then completely strip. Ok fine, I get it, some guys are comfortable enough that they can walk arounda locker room naked. Great for you. What i don't get, is why he felt compelled to turn to me, and start talking to me. Just a casual conversation. I have boundaries. Being that close to me, naked, and trying to be casual...and reaching out to pat me on the shoulder? WOAH MAN! not cool!

I guess 2 questions you need to ask yourself are: How close are you to being done? and Do you have to finish it for your career?

 

I can totally sympathize with the struggles though. I find that those who haven't gone through graduate school simply don't understand what it entails and it's really hard to talk to anybody who hasn't gone through it. Even if you enjoy what you're doing (and I do), there's just a lot of times where it just isn't enjoyable. Even during Sabres games I think to myself "man I should really be doing some work right now". Big props to your girlfriend for dealing with you though, it's certainly not easy to do--among other things, one of the contributing factors to me and my girlfriend of 4 years breaking up was the pursuit of my degree.

The awkward gym moments are definitely the worst, and it's always the old people who are completely OK with walking around the locker room nude. The gym I used to go to apparently got a bunch of complaints about this and actually started forcing guys to at least have a towel wrapped around them in the locker room.

 

Another thing that annoys me at the gym is guys who get upset when other guys look at their girlfriend. Although it's never happened to me personally, I've seen fights almost break out because one guy is staring at another's girlfriend. Maybe staring isn't in the best taste....but if your girlfriend is walking around in hot pants and a sports bra in the general section of the gym (when there's a separate women's workout area), do you honestly expect guys to NOT look at her? That's like going to the beach in a string bikini and being mad when she gets looked at. If she doesn't care then neither should you...and if she does care, then she should either wear something less revealing or go to the women's area.

 

Final gym complaint: body odor. Obviously there's going to be sweat and some unpleasant smells, but if every single time you're at the gym you can be smelled from 3 machines over, there's a problem. Shower... deodorant...body spray...use SOMETHING to control that please. Thanks.
