Will Victor Olofsson be traded?

I am not convinced that the Sabres ever planned to trade him before the end of the coming season.

I think the plan is to keep the forward group together as is for one more season.  When the youngest forwards have another year of maturity the Sabres will re-***** all the forwards, especially with KO very possibly returing as a player after the coming season.

how does that word not pass the filter?

  • nfreeman changed the title to Will Victor Olofsson be traded?

Most of you seem to think Olofsson is just being sold off to the highest bidder for futures.

I don’t think that’s the case at all.

I think he is a chip being floated as part of a package aimed at acquiring a roster upgrade.

I think any chance he was being shipped off for a pick vanished along with Quinn’s Achilles.

I think VO could very easily be a Sabre through February and get moved to a Western team needing scoring for a playoff push at the deadline (as Quinn will be back). And in the meantime, you simply rely on Greenway and Clifton being in the lineup, plus everyone's general increase in defensive acumen by being older and more aware of it.

Who is trading a roster upgrade for an overpaid PP specialist?

Someone who needs to move out a body, thinks the combination of Victor and the other assets constitutes the best offer, and disagrees with your opinion on Victor.

I think Adams will have to retain in order to close any deal and I think many GMs would be interested in a 28-goal scorer at $2.3 million, regardless of the other holes in his game.

I agree he may be a chip in such a move, or he may be moved to acquire a chip needed for such a move. I don't think KA will keep him just because Quinn is out. KA has a longterm strategy plan. Keeping Olofsson would block a player like Rousek, or an outside chance, Kulich's opportunity. The larger picture for myself in any event, is I don't see 1 players injury as forcing KA from his strategy.

The same with the d man situation. Signing a few 5/6/depth d men does not a top 4 d man make. I have high confidence a trade will be done to address that, and Olofsson may be a direct, or Indirect piece of that. Again, imho.

To be clear, I don’t think Quinn’s injury will prevent Adams from using him as a chip.

What I am saying is that prior to the injury, Olofsson did not have a role in the starting 12 and was likely to be moved for futures if he couldn’t be moved in a package for an upgrade.

With Quinn’s injury, however, Victor does have a role in the starting lineup. Therefore, I think Adams would rather keep him for the time being than acquiring a draft pick.

I think Rousek or Kulich should have to take the roster spot rather than have it freely given.

Just IMHO.

I think he will be moved after Quinn gets back, probably at the deadline.

Unless we package him in a hockey trade somehow in favor of an emerging prospect.

The thing is the Quinn injury didn’t open a slot in the top six for VO. I don’t know what kind of third line Meatballs intends to roll with (energy line, big boys line, another scoring line, or perhaps a new kids line), but I still think he’s a fish out of water on this team.

Until Quinn’s injury I would have said yes. The question is, is there anyone we could trade him for to fill a middle six role and be an asset to Mitts?

There were middle 6 UFAs that we passed on, although rumor has it we pursued one pretty hard but could not reach an agreement.

Why trade him at this point unless we are getting an upgrade elsewhere in the roster (goalie?) or for an offer KA can't refuse?

Our roster currently stands at 3G, 9D, and 12F.  Move Bryson and your back to the 23 contract limit.  The team has nearly 6 million in cap space. If Bryson is traded, that number jumps to nearly 8 million.  There is literally no pressure to trade VO.

I also think we are forgetting that VO was one of our best forwards in the second half of 2021/22.

PS: I'd also move UPL or Comrie to make room for a 13th forward.

Trading him is an upgrade. Again, Rousek for a full season gives us a better outcome than Olofsson.

While I think Rousek has a great shot at making the Sabres, I doubt he'll add 20-25 goals next season.

It literally does not matter. Everyone keeps throwing this out in defense of Oloffson but he was a defensive sieve. His 28 goals were offset by -23 goals alone at even strength. So if Rousek can be a +/- 0 and score 5 goals, he is as useful as Olofsson.

Olofsson can't play defense. Rousek can, I will take Rousek and his less of a shot over Olofsson's shot and almost nothing else.
