8 points out

I'll take my own advice and act like a winning fan.

Despite this horrendous streak after a good start, the Sabres are only 10 points out of a playoff spot just before Christmas. It looks bleak, but it's been done before.

The 10 can't get too much worse though (have you seen Bo Derek lately? Yikes).

It starts with tonight. Maybe the 10 can become an 8. I'll keep updating the total.

Baby steps.

This is not impossible at this point.

There are the top 3 in each division that are pretty far ahead and then the rest are all bunched up within a 10 point range.  If the Sabres win a few in a row here they will be right back in the thick of it for a wildcard.

Every single point counts big time now.

UPL deserved much better last night.  He should stay up at this point.

With a .938 save percentage through 3 games, and a 1.98 gaa, he deserves to stay up. However, he is very unlikely to continue this, as it would be his best save percentage and gaa in any league, any season unless you count 1 game in the AHL in 2018-2019, where he had a .941, and the 2018-2019 wjc, where he had a .180 gaa through 6 games.

Of course, he can't sustain this level of play for very long.

I would play him every game until he cools down.  He gives the Sabres the best chance to win right now.

  • PASabreFan changed the title to 9 points out

9 points equates to a 11-12 game winning streak, or 11-12 games above average for the rest of the season. How, you ask? To be on playoff pace, you need to capture 1.2 points per game (give or take a few 0.01s depending on the year). Each win is 0.8 points above that number. This isn't insurmountable, but to hit 0.600 points per game (which Boston and Pittsburgh are pacing at right now), the Sabres need 1.37 points per game. Over a full season, that paces 112 points meaning the Sabres need to be one of the top two or three teams in hockey for the next five months.

Still 9 out.

Tonight's pertinent action:

Bruins at Isles

Wings at Canes

Blue Jackets at Oilers

Anybody feeling 7?

If we get to within 4 points by Christmas, I like our chances.
