There’s something to be said about a comedian who can be very funny and “clean“... it’s very hard to do… And the master of that would be Bill Cosby.

for me… Dave Chapelle is up there.

I think an alternate list would be the best comedians who were born After 1970 ?

Brian Regan is hilarious and has a clean act. One of my favorites. The opposite end of the spectrum, have you heard Anthony Jeselnik?

I know he's like taboo now, but i always found louis CK to be really funny.  Willing to cross lines, cynical, self-loathing

Sinbad - never swears (not that I mind swearing at all).  He's a great stand-up comedian.  Watch any of his specials on the streaming services.  Well worth it.

No particular order, mind you.

I wouldn't say greatest of all time, but of quasi modern comedians I enjoy John Mulaney, Sam Morrill, Chad Daniels, Jim Jeffries, and Kyle Kinane.

I also agree with the Bill Burr and Brian Regan sentiment

I think you forgot Lenny Bruce, Bob Hope and Mark Twain.   If I hadn't seen 4 of these 5 in person myself I say, "Christ are you Old!"

Here are my top five:

1.) Jerry Seinfeld

2.) Chris Rock

3.) George Carlin

4.) Sarah Silverman

5.) Louis CK (I saw him at small club in NYC back in 1991 - met him after his set.)

honorable mentions:

a.) Sam Kinison -  Died too early, but had some great HBO specials.

b.) Sebastian Maniscalco - probably my favorite to watch today.

c.) John Mulaney - too young to be considered great, but definitely rising fast.

I was lucky enough to see Carlin live during college. It was a small show and it was clear he used those shows to sift through material and ideas to see what worked what didn't and what could be honest better. He had a big notebook during the show and made notes on occasion.

Besides from the other names on this list. Katt Williams had some pretty funny standups back in the day.

And from my childhood days i'd toss in Gallagher. He was pretty witty & he liked to smash things with sledgehammers.

The sledgehammering alone gets him on my list haha

These 2 still wouldn't be Top 5 imo... Just other names added that havent been mentioned yet

I couldn't get past Katt using the N word 3 times in every sentence.  Made me wholly uncomfortable.

Chapelle's take on Gallagher
