Blue, I will leave it to you to work your magic with the numbers, but to me it is pretty obvious that paying the going open market rate for UFA wingers coming off good seasons results in bad contracts more often than not.

And I don't believe that just because I've watched a lot of Matt Moulson, Ville Leino and Drew Stafford.

If we sign him this season, before he goes to UFA, would we get a discount?

My first choice would be to sign him in this case, but I am also open to the idea of maximizing the asset at the deadline if either party isn't interested in a new contract.

Or if the goal is to potentially offer him a new deal in the off-season once he reaches UFA, would again be good with it if it's at a reasonable price.

I like McGinn just fine but he's JAG having a nice year. Wouldn't matter to me either way.

I disagree here. From a pure stats perspective McGinn is not going to lift your team up but his dependability shouldn't be overlooked.  I've been a fan of his since San Jose.  He's not out of place on ANY line.  There aren't a lot of players like that.  Perhaps the Sabres will have a few more of those like Larsson and Schaller too, but to date I think McGinn brings a little bit of that extra to the table.

They should trade him. It's the right thing to do for the Sabres and for McGinn.  I just hope he's one of those players that comes back.

Is everyone willing to pay McGinn $5 mill a year to score 18 goals and 40 points, if he's lucky?

I don't think he'll get that much from anyone.

I can see him getting, say, $3.75MM x 3 years.  I'd be pretty surprised if it ends up being higher than $4MM per year x 4 years.

He's definitely out of place on the 3rd line of a Bylsma team. His defense is mediocre at best, and Bylsma uses his 3rd as defensive specialists. If you're paying McGinn, you're paying him to be a top-6 player here.

I'd be pretty surprised if you could get him any cheaper (in dollars or term) than what Beleskey got: 5 years $19 million.

Sir, that's way too much work

But he most definitely strikes me as the type to get a UFA contract based on a decent season in an offensive role on a bad team that he wouldn't be in on a good team. I'm not totally opposed, but I'm leery because of what I think he'll get.

Sorry, but McGinn is just a JAG. If that is the skill level of a player you want in a top six then this team will never make the playoffs. IMO we already have two players on this team who provide the same talent/skill that Mcginn does in Foligno and Nic44 and in all honesty all three can be traded for all I care.

I think McGinn brings it more consistently than Foligno and has substantially better finish than Deslauriers.

Having said that, I wouldn't give him much more than the #s I mentioned upthread, and I definitely want the Sabres to trade him at the deadline.

This.

Seriously. The guy will probably end up with 55 games on our top line and manage 16-18 goals. I get the symbolic value to those suffering PTSD, but from a pure on-ice perspective, I just think it's a really weird place to draw a line in the sand.

And this. Especially the bold text.

GO SABRES!!!

I don't think Foligno will be back here next season.  I'd rather see him traded at the deadline.  I know the return will not be as good.

I disagree with the JAG labell for McGinn.  IMO JAG doesn't look past his basic stats.  I think he's one of those players that "plays the game the right way" as GMTM would put it.  And I don't believe there are enough of them in the league to label any of them JAG.  And I like the Grier comparison.  I think it fits here.  Grier's stats were nothing to write home about, but I don't think he was JAG either..

I don't think Foligno will ever be what we need him to be.  IMO he fits the JAG label hella more closely than McGinn does.

McGinn and Foligno are nice bottom 6 guys.    If they can be had for reasonable contracts, they should keep them.   It's not like they're going to be over the hill veterans by the time this team is a contender.

Foligno is making 2.25M right now.  He will command more than that as an RFA.  Not worth it at all.

This is where I'm at.

McGinn's cap hit is $2.95 & he's making $3 this year. IF they can get him back at ~$3.5/ for 3-4 years AFTER trading him; make it happen. But (assuming DB is here to stay), he isn't a fit for the 3rd line & I would really like to see him upgraded out of the top 2 lines next year (or 2 years down the line at most). That makes him a 4th line PP front of the net specialist. This team already has 1 $5MM version of that - they don't need a 2nd $5MM (or even $4MM) one IMHO. Though as mentioned by someone above, he doesn't look out of place on the top 2 lines, so he can fill in there as needed. But since he'll be lucky to break 20 goals, don't want him on L1 & would prefer to not have him on L2 either.
