Sorry, I don't have the numbers.  But if a major junior player doesn't sign after 2 years, he goes back into the draft and then gets a new 2 year window.  After that it is free agency.  So if a major junior is drafted by a team he does not want to play for, he's stuck for only 2 years if there's no trade.  The college kid would be stuck for 4.

Sometimes those time windows can be a year shorter depending on their age.

And yeah, the goalies do tend to have a much more crazy developmental curve, but there's no fix for that.  The idea constantly thrown around is to add an extra year window on rights.  That's great and all, but where is the player playing during that time?  They want them within the AHL/NHL system as soon as possible.  They do not want them heading to europe and they're too old for juniors at that point.  Also, there's no chance the union would ever agree to adding that year for a small subset of players.  Quite honestly, the only thing that may ever going to change this is the NIL stuff going on in the NCAA right now.  If they ever loosen their rules and allow players to remain in college after signing,  problem solved.  But that's not an NHL thing.  There's nothing the league can do.

So, if a major junior college player doesn't sign, they go back into draft, they are not an FA, right ?

Thanks for info

Right, but if they aren’t drafted in their 2nd go-round, they do become a free agent right away, pretty sure that’s what happened with Brandon Hagel.

Players that aren't in any NHL team's system are eligible to be drafted between the ages of 18-20.  Players younger than that are ineligible to play in the NHL.  Players older than that are not draft eligible but may be signed as unrestricted free agents.

Exactly.  This doesn't mean he's afraid of Levi, or knows Levi is better, or doesn't want to compete with Levi (or that he's spoiled, or ungrateful, or a bad guy).  It means that the Kings situation -- up and coming, already in the playoffs, lots of young prospects, Southern California, weaker conference, Quick gone, Peterson washing out, etc. -- is more attractive to him than the Sabres situation.

He's earned the right, entirely under the rules, to choose his preferred situation, and he prefers the Kings.  That's all it is.

Probably, unless the Kings just think they can entice him to all that. He could still pull a Vesey on them.

Interesting that they get a 3rd for Portillo and only a 7th for Asplund, an actual NHL player.

Draft picks are about potential. Asplund’s potential is that of a replacement level player and Portillo has starting goalie potential, although unlikely.  Since replacement level players can be had on the waiver wire for free, they don’t have much trade value.

That's assuming he signs.  I can't imagine anyone in his camp had any influence on this deal.  Has there been anything out there suggesting that?

His agent is Pat Brisson, so I think the safer assumption is that his camp DID have some influence on this deal.

Brisson was Rob Blake’s agent during his playing days. Their kids played minor hockey together.

Didn’t even know that.

I was just going off the fact that Brisson is basically the most powerful, well connected agent out there.  With this addition info, I think it’s pretty clear that Portillo was personally shepherded to LA by Brisson.

There’s a scene in the Ryan Miller night Embedded video where Jim Corsi talks about the circumstances in Buffalo when Miller was drafted:

Recent 1st-round draft picks Biron and Noronen in the system and the best goalie of all time between the pipes.

If Portillo wasn’t interested in signing because of Levi and UPL, kinda glad he’s in LA

The new Cal Peterson.  Glad we got a third for him, but good riddance if he is afraid of competition for a spot and unwilling to play in Buffalo.

Petersen is a perfect proxy for Portillo.  Their college numbers are very similar.

Unlike most highly coveted college players who take basket weaving at Michigan, McGroarty, West and  Brindley! I would be shocked if McGroarty could spell his own last name . That is not Portillo. I think you would have to go a long way back in the archives to find a NHL prospect in the Ross program at U of M. So yeah highly intelligent is appropriate. He was never signing in Buffalo once the Reinhardt trade happened. Move on.

I was going to say John Scott, but he has an Engineering Degree from Michigan Tech, not Michigan.

So what you're saying is, a player in Juniors can decline their first team, decline their second drafting team, and then be a UFA after four years and pick their spot? That number sounds familiar somehow.

Funny story, Brendan Brisson who is a prospect with Vegas was actually babysat by Sidney Crosby. Crosby was visiting Brisson at His Cottage right after He was drafted and the younger Brisson Brother hurt himself and had to go to the hospital. The parents left Sidney in charge of Brendan while they went to the ER

But 4 is supposed to equal 5.
