Star Wars -The Last Jedi

Since nobody has posted in two weeks, I am going to assume that it is OK to post spoilers without hiding them.  If that's not true, then don't read my post.

*** Spoilers ahead ***

I finally saw it yesterday.  Overall, it wasn't bad or great, but had some of both.

I definitely liked where Luke's character went.  It wasn't totally unexpected, because of the trailers, but went further than I had thought it would.

The Leia flying scene was s**t and the rest of the movie could have happened without it.

Together, those two were part of the "expect the unexpected" theme that became clear.  This included the death of Snoke (still hate the name), Rey's family background, etc.  It was a bit much.

I do wonder if some of those are not completely done, though.  For example, Snoke connected Kylo Ren and Rey.  He showed each of them things about the other that brought them together.  Who's to say that he didn't manipulate parts of those.  Perhaps, he made KR think that the truth behind Rey's family is that they were nobodies and Rey, being naive and impressionable at this point, believed it.   Doesn't mean that they actually were.  Of course, if that is the case, then how they play out the reveal could be good or terribly bad/cheesy.  Still, something to watch for ...

After two movies, I just don't feel as connected to Poe's character, as (say) Han's character in the original.

I do wanted to see it again before I do render my final judgement, as I liked TFA more after a few viewings.

The cruise-to-lightspeed-fleet-slice maneuver was visually powerful.  Obviously, you wouldn't want to suicide your own big, expensive cruisers doing that too often, but it does seem like they could take a cheaper bulk freighter and sacrifice it to take out one or more big baddie ships in the future.

I saw it last weekend.

I’m of an age where we went to see A New Hope in the theaters as young kids. But I’m no fanboy or deep-dive geek (for example, it remains unclear to me who or what Snope is/was — I don’t much care either).

We loved Force Awakens (such a charming homage), and we might’ve liked Rogue One even more.

Last Jedi is a funking mess. I saw one critic call it a “glorious mess”, and I was like, no, it’s just a a mess. A confused jumble of lotsa stuff. It just didn’t hold together and hang, as a story. Josie had an apt metaphor above — they came out with brown.

My wife had a charitable observation: The middle movie is often the hardest to make. OTOH, Empire Strikes Back is arguably the best of all the movies made.

Forgot about this. Might have actually been the worst scene in movie history

I was legitimately surprised that Kylo did not kill her, but that his wingmen actually did.  It added to the internal struggle: "I want to kill her ... I can't kill her ... oh, they killed her ... how do I feel about that?"  Then, they showed her floating body and zoomed in on her face.  I thought, "They couldn't.  They wouldn't.  They did.  Ugh."  Coming so early in the movie really had me worried about the rest.

Actually did the same myself. Threw my head back with a 'come the ###### on. really? '

Carter and I let out a few "oh come on" and loud sighs accidentally in a few spots. Big moments for that- the Rose "look closer" casino stuff. SuperLeia. Snoke dying. And the biggest one for us- Rose saving Finn at the last minute (oh like we didn't know THAT was gonna happen) followed by the awkward middle school smooch. I think I whispered "oh just let her die" at that point.

People clapped at the end of it in our theater. I'm glad some enjoyed it I guess.

Neither here nor there but I've seen a bunch of defenders of the film say the bombs dropping in outer space was explainable because the bombs were electromagnetic. Works I guess, but you should only have to show, not tell. Sign of bad writing. Stupid little detail, I know.

Lucas you fool.

I saw New Hope in the theater as a wee one. The one and only movie my family ever went to a theater to see. It was an epic thing for me and I’ve always been a fan. There were some downright awesome storylines in the EU. Star Wars was awesome because of all the books, games and fan fiction that fed off each other to create something irreplaceable. Something that was just dumb fun.

I liked Rogue One even though it was new cannon. TFA was not good but there was still a hope to see my childhood heroes being heroic again. TLJ was a huge disappointment. I hate what they’ve done with Luke. He goes from budding Jedi master, resister to the dark side, destroyer of the Sith, to a batshit crazy homeless person? Get the F out, Rian. That sucks. Why in hell throw out the EU? Your so fantastic and imaginative that you can outdo a forty year collective work? Go F yourself, Rian.

Disney creates this character, Snoke, who is supposed to be an ancient super power, watching the past trilogies happen, and in the middle of his first dialogue he is outwitted by his apprentice? Sliced in half you say? His Elite Praetorian Gaurds watch his body fall to the floor but don’t react?

The scene where Rey has the telepathic encounter with Ren and he doesn’t have his shirt on and she gets all sorts of flustered had no business being in any movie. Rey, the next great Jedi, the only hope for the resurrection of the Jedi order, is horny. Go F yourself, Rian.

The endless running away? The whole second plot that was a complete waste of time?

I didn’t like the story or the way it was told. You knew that wasn’t really Luke. Instead of hopping on a ship and ending Kylo’s rule once and for all, he was burning the force tree with all the Jedi texts inside. Once again, Rian.

I’m done with Disney’s Star Wars. I’ll go back to the cannon I know. My buddy Rian is going to direct an Old Republic trilogy? HAHA! Goodbye Revan and Malak. You never existed.

I thought Lucas sold the rights for Star Wars stuff?

I’ll bet that fool is kicking himself in the ass. If not, he should be. Maybe he has early onset Alzheimer’s and doesn’t realize what a blasphemous blight he has afflicted on the galaxy.

Fallen to the dark side, he has. Suffer through Disney, we must.

I'm pretty sure you're correct; this is all Disney.

Saw the movie Friday, went into it completely cold; unbelievably I managed to not hear any spoilers (it helps to talk to very few people in social contexts at times). It was fine. I don't feel as strongly about it as many of the opinions here; that may be affected by have a strong beer or two before the movie and a beer during[0].

I had no problem with Rose, BTW. Besides being the same name as my daughter, movies can't have enough competent femaile roles. Functionally, it could have been Poe or Chewey or whatever, but having a woman come to the aid of some dude is something that needs more play.

[0] Movie Tavern. Seems like a great idea, but beer and theaters don't mix; I spent the middle of the movie debating on another beer (no) and the last 20 minutes waiting for my bladder to explode. Movies need intermissions if they're going to serve alcohol.

What makes some characters interesting and cool is not really knowing their backstory in detail. Han's a smuggler who wouldn't hesitate to kill. He's kinda trustworthy but also kinda a lone wolf. Done. I don't need backstory on how he got the falcon or how he met chewie or why he is the way he is.

Giving two big thumbs up to Disney’s Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge.  Wife and I had an early access to the latest Disney attraction.  As soon as we entered the park, it felt like we were in a “galaxy far, far away....”.  Felt like we were actually on set for a Star Wars movie.  Having an opportunity to stand next to ships and droids you’ve only seen in movies is really cool.  Even got to have blue milk while walking around.  The obvious must do was piloting the millennium falcon while on smugglers run.  Very exciting and so life like.  If you ever get a chance to go to Disney, do not miss out.  Loved every minute of it.
