Sabres Prospects 2017-2018

Nylander should no longer be in our discussions regarding the roster in the following seasons. He’s a bust. Book it.

Sure looks like it.

He’s 20, I’m going to give him a few more seasons before declaring him a bust.

Early returns are trending that way however

he might still make it but may have to sit in the A for a few more years before he gets it. Fine dont call him up till he starts learning the lesson.

He is going to be disappointed in his offer when his ELC runs out, and will go back to Europe and have a long, succesful career over there.

From Ryan Kennedy

Casey Mittelstadt, C, University of Minnesota Golden Gophers (Big Ten) – Enjoy this kid now, Gopher fans, because he’s going to be playing in the NHL for the Buffalo Sabres next year. Mittelstadt’s offensive skills and creativity are bursting at the seams and he has the speed to make a difference at the next level. He can also play wing if need be. NHL arrival: 2018-19

Nylander is in trouble

I saw Nylander play in Rochester just before Christmas against the Marlies. I watched him closely. He floated in the slot, was slow to engage along the boards and was not successful when he did. He lacked physicality. I know that is not a snipers job to muck it up in the corners. Overall, I didn't think he added much in the offensive zone. In the defensive zone, he seemed to be waiting in the slot for a breakout pass which never came. Having said that, he had a goal and an assist in that game. Even those stat lines, I wasn't really impressed and I had a bias going in hoping he'd impress me.

I was so impressed with those highlights of him that came out in his draft year. I really thought he'd be a 40 goal scorer.

I don't think that now. I think he'll be a defensive liability and wont be more than a 3rd liner. And I really, really hope I'm wrong and just saw a bad overall game by him.

BTW Guhle really impressed me. He joined the rush consistently. I think he's a bit light, and will need to bulk up more to be an effective defensive defenseman. But he was fun to watch offensively.

Way too early to pull the plug on Nylander. Will he be a 30 or 40 goal scorer? probably not but the kid has something the Sabres desperately need and that's skill. Even if he is a 3rd line player and PP specialist.

I'm still waiting to be, not even impressed, but just not rolling my eyes, at Nylander's on-ice, 5v5 play for the first time since he was drafted. Whether that's at world jrs, training camp scrimmages, NHL preseason, AHL, NHL. It hasn't happened yet. Dude looks sick stickhandling in warmups though.

Sergachev is outscoring most Sabres in Tampa right now and McAvoy is already playing top-pairing-level defense, with franchise potential. Yup.

I will agree that Sergy shoulda been the pick.  McAvoy woulda been going off the board if memory serves me right.

If you dump on Murray for Nylander, we have to give him props for drafting Guhle.

The Nylander I saw at the WJC is the same Nylander I’ve seen in every viewing since we drafted him: a very talented kid who refuses to engage at any level.

At least, by the end of the tournament he wasn't getting knocked on his butt 2x/ shift. Unfortunately, that seemed to be due to him avoiding going near the boards w/ the puck whenever possible & forechecking w/ the sort of "wild abandon" <_< that even Miro Satan would cringe at.

If Nylander is a washout, is he GMTM's biggest mistake?

Good thing he used BPA instead of drafting for need.

Does TM get credit for Guhle?  Sure why not.  That gives him, possibly a second success story from his years here.  To bad he didn't keep our picks in 2015.  We could have had 6 success stories instead of two.

I'm not giving Guhle the go ahead yet.

And this isn't something that you can point to his age about and say he still can develop.  This is an either you have it or you don't characteristic.

As we shouldn't.

I know I am probably seen as cynical regarding the outlook of our prospects, but there is a very, very long line of talented kids that had great promise that never really lived up to any promise.  I need to see him be exciting at this level before getting excited myself.

I don't blame BPA.  I blame his penchant for avoiding dirty areas as something that was missed or stupidly downplayed in the overall evaluation of him as a player.

As much as I loved GMTM, thus is something any average GM or scout should notice blindfolded.

Exactly. TM was looking at the shinny toy instead of building a proper team. I felt then and still feel that he kind of wanted Nylander to compete with Tor. Brother vs Brother, Mathews vs Eichel. To bad he had no idea how to build a roster, draft or manage the cap.
