2016 NHL Draft

I've always thought they should make a rule about this. They could make a rule that no team can move UP from the lottery more than once every other year or something like that. This way you're not penalizing a team if they legitimately finish last but you are spreading the wealth more assuredly.

Heard it here first - the Oilers will not get the first pick in next years draft as they will finish 3rd in the Pacific and make the play-offs.

Mini-Mock:

Round 1: Based on standings:  Current pick #7

Olli Joulevi, LHD, London Knights

http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=196391

Slick skating left-handed defensemen on my favorite Jr Team

Round 2:  Based on standings:  Current pick: #37

Jakob Cederholm, RHD, Jonkoping HV71

http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=169012

Another guy that has first round talent that may or may not slip.   While we need forward depth, this is one of the other defensemen that I see translating similarly to other Swedes.

He got to make the decision himself and chose Canada. His dad was a Canadian who played in the NHL.

A la Tyler Myers ... Absent dad played.

Chychrun cut from team Canada. Disappointing, really wanted to see him play.

Dal Colle, too ... A big name. I. Looking for debate and intrigue online.

Draft Sets up nice for the Sabres who will be looking for goal scoring wingers or Dman (maybe with a preference to LHD?)

There is concern that his shoulder injury hasn't healed. Chykrun that is. Tough to take a guy to a short tourney with a short roster that might not make it through.

I like Ollie, but like the size of Sergachyov more. Would take either. But would much rather have scoring winger.

DeBrincat might have to donate half of his first contract to Johnny Gaudreau, who had another hat trick tonight, if they both keep up their paces. It's good to see smaller guys succeeding in the NHL, though I don't think many more will be slipping to the fourth round. I might be talking out of my ass, but I can't think of a single of player who has had his draft stock rise so much from a guy who not only doesn't play on his team, but isn't even in the same league.

Executive says he would've easily taken Matthews ahead of Eichel were he in last year's draft

Custance: Interesting talking to execs about Matthews. No hesitation when asked about him vs. Eichel. http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/14426927/nhl-auston-matthews-best-player-world-not-nhlhttp://twitter.com/CraigCustance/status/679718703806701568/photo/1

Worth noting that these comments are made after Matthews has already torn up a professional league over seas..

I'm always skeptical of when the hype machine starts for the next draft, you almost always hear this kind of thing. They could certainly be on the same level, but I have a hard time believing Matthews would have been the no-brainer this summer.

Great time for USA Hockey.

Hopefully they're all ready for prime time next Olympics. I may vomit if Backes and Stastny are our best centers again.

Ya, I'm not really a fan of some of the statements in that article. At one point, he writes, "It's just that Matthews projects to be even better." He then quotes a single executive who said something to that effect. Matthews is quite clearly on Eichel's level, and they project pretty similarly. But I have read a ton of articles saying that Matthews was a likely number 3 had he been available last year, and just recently have heard analysts on TSN make statements to the same effect. I'm too lazy right now to find links, but I also don't want to cause it doesn't really matter. Everyone knows they are both very good, and opinions will vary as to who would have gone before the other.

Any quote, like the one I posted, that pretends to imply that there is any kind of factual consensus on who projects to be better I don't think is accurate in any way.

  • 2 weeks later...

Matthews, Auston 6'2 194 C L USA 17-Sep-97 ZSC

Chychrun, Jakob 6'2 214 D L CAN 31-Mar-98 Sarnia

Puljujarvi, Jesse 6'4 203 RW R FIN 7-May-98 Karpat

Laine, Patrik 6'4 206 RW R FIN 10-Apr-98 Tappara

Tkachuk, Matthew 6'1 194 LW L USA 11-Dec-97 London

Nylander, Alexander 6'0 172 RW R SWE 2-Mar-98 Mississauga

I'd be happy with any of these but the more I look into it, I think one of the fins or Tkachuck would fit us the most.

And I want Puljujarvi just to hear RJ say it :D

I'm all about adding a two-way left side defenseman. So, I'd be very happy with Chychrun. Obviously Matthews is the guy if we luck into the 1st overall pick. The other guys would be just fine too. I thought Tkachuk looked good at the WJC.

Great list.  I would add Nylander on that list as well.  Apparently he is ahead of where is brother was a couple of years ago at his age and he's already ripping up the AHL as a rookie in that league.  It seems like there is no Crosby/McDavid in this draft but it's got a great headliner in Mathews and it's pretty deep.  The top 10 picks look to be real difference makers.

And I'm an idiot and see you added Nylander
