Well, It was obviously before the 2 year deal for Byram, but anticipated he'd be walked right up to FA. There's not much encouraging there. Great if the league puts some pressure on Pegula, because the unhappiness of the fans doesn't seem to move the needle for him.

What do you mean by #2?  And anything the league can do to even help the Sabres?

Seems that they were right on with the view that Byram would be walking straight to free agency in two years, because that is exactly what happened.  Sabres should have traded him before the draft.  Now, and as noted, they have an asset that is diminished in value.

To what extent can the league get involved?

The league actively took part in denying the Sabres McDavid. They did nothing for over a decade, they were busy situating the 2 Florida teams and Vegas to explode/grow those fan bases for money all while Pegula dismantled and destroyed a small market teams 50 year brand.

They can do nothing, it’s proven it will not do anything. No calvary is coming to save this fan base, it’s just the reality of the situation.

It was against the league’s interest for the team (and other teams) to tank like we did. They should have stepped in and saved the Sabres from themselves back then.

One of the best hockey markets in the US is in big trouble and the problem 100% points to one person.  That Shanahan rumor, if true, tells you exactly what the problem is with this team.

Every off season is the same, we lose better players than we gain.  No players in their prime will come here.

I could rant about the past 14 years, but it’s useless   I am not attending any hockey game in Buffalo this year for the first time EVER.

Honest question, is that person Pegula? or Adams...in your opinion?

I think the league is seeing what TP obviously is insulated from the abject visceral disdain the fan base has for him and his FO and the abject nonpluss they have for us. People are voting with their feet currently and it will get worse as the situation continues to the point our area will look like the Cleveland Barron's arena in the 70s... this clearly is bad for league revenue. The question is what will they do about it. They could try and force a move... they could put pressure for a new FO... put some kind of a control board in place 😆  lol but I think anything they do will be about organization and not league wide competition aka nmc's

Its been about a decade now, but I could swear on the talk shows out of toronto, the same people who would talk about the Sabres tanking and say it was embarrassing, they should be punished (draft picks taken away, etc), and yet the very next year, would heap praise on Toronto for doing it to get matthews, saying how smart of an organization they were.

A) it’s not uncommon for big holding companies to focus on problem areas of their business

B) The Shanahan stuff has been deemed hogwash by most reputable sources

C) The doom and gloom is not universally shared and some national publications list Buffalo in the more improved and fringe playoff range.

D) Most of these media pundits have an agenda

E) The league’s bigger problem is the divide between the halves and halves nots which they try and hide with their silly points system.

If Dahlin ends up leaving, pack it up and call it the end of the franchise.  There's no coming back from that death spiral.

And whether that happens comes down to, for the second season in a row, them taking the cheapest corrective action plan to the roster.  Last year, the 3rd line center + 4th line revamp followed this year with some bottom 6 wingers and perhaps a 2nd/3rd pair defensemen.

We're being sold again that the sum is greater than the parts.  As in, better team defense and goaltending with equal offensive production moves them into the playoffs.  I'll believe it when I see it.

The lack of urgency is appalling and as @JP51 noted, the owner is completely ignorant that it's go-time.  And even if Adams is fired during or after the season, Jarmo ain't stopping the bottom dropping out.

Should have traded him no matter what? I assume you mean "trade him for fair value." But we don't know what the Byram offers were.

And please explain how having Byram with cost control for two years diminishes his value? If anything he's more valuable now.

The difference is that when Toronto got Matthews they were more successful in adding talent around him. After the Sabres got Eichel they were not very successful in bringing in enough support players to maximize his talents. And the same roster building failures can be applied after using a high draft picks to acquire Dahlin and Reinhart. The Sabres squandered the significant assets they had on hand.
