Right that’s what I’m saying: he’s not getting traded this summer

People that are dreamily envisioning it as a building block transaction for something to improve this summer are mistaken - that’s what I’m saying (nm that being beyond Adams’ capacity)

There wasn’t “more coming” after the JJ trade - it wasn’t the “first shoe”.

remember? “I’ll judge the Peterka deal when we see what’s next”

nothing was next . I’ll happily eat the shoe if there is

To the quoted Tweet: I think acquiring Kesselring and resigning Byram is a good start, defensively, to show Dahlin something.

Offensively they still need a top six forward.

Acceptable.

I am looking forward to this season, it looks like an AHL forward or 2 are going to make the jump to the big club.

They do have to keep the youngest team in the league status

I don't think this team is worse. It's just only marginally better. We're an 85pt team.

Idk where. Big club is packed at forward. You'd have to trade at least one. (Lines are rough estimates not the point of my overall post)

Benson - Norris - Thompson

Zucker - Kulich - Tuch

Greenway - McLeod - Quinn

Krebs - Danforth - Doan

Kozak - Malenstyn

Given Byram's perceived upside, $6.25M is a big win if the plan is to trade him.

Strap him to Dahlin's side to start the season and wait for the offers to come in!

They'd be smart to give him power's pp time but I doubt they will.

Peterka had a positive plus minus and a positive team relative plus minus.   The idea that he was a defensive liability is simply not true.

He plays defense better than most 23 year old 30 goal scorers.

You're not just losing his 30 goals next season, you're losing his 40, 45, 50 goal seasons.... yes 50, he will score 50 at some point.    To trade him as an RFA for a middling defenseman is criminal and in no way shape or form makes the team better.

The actual defensemen are not the problem.  The commitment to play sound team defense is... for both defensemen and forwards.

The problem is the construction of the team.  KA ices the youngest roster in the league and then acts annoyed that they can't keep the puck out of their net.   I posted about this a few months ago... there's a massive correlation between average team age and goals against.. and it's been this way for as far back as they keep those statistics.

You want to make the playoffs Kevyn?  Trade 5 or 6 youngsters  (Kulich, Benson, Johnson, Rosen, Östlund, Helenius, etc....) packaging them for some proven vets.

Problem is that his primary strategy is to only bring in players who "want to be here"... and there aren't many proven vets willing to waive to come here, so he whines about taxes and palm trees, when in reality, YOU Kevyn, are the reason, not taxes, not palm trees... but LOSING and having no real plan to improve.

Trading Zach Benson would be the stupidest thing Adams could do. He's already an elite defense forward and the points are doing to come in buckets.

Well 2 years to UFA puts him in a prime spot at 26 or 27 or whatever ready for a big payday anywhere he wants so I'm sure he's happy with that even if it is Buffalo.

I suspect his ask for a longer term deal in Buffalo was too high for Terry and his hand puppet Kev and since they are incapable of making good trades this was relatively easy to get.

So at least we have the belief that the D will be better for the next 2 years and we have to hope Quinn gets better and Benson and Kulich keep developing and if the injury squad stay relatively healthy well then if it all goes well and UPL doesn't suck well maybe, then maybe, we only miss the playoffs by a few points and maybe still pick in the top 10. One can dream can't one.

This gives us at least 1 more year of keeping all the developing defense away from Buffalo. Novikov,  Komarov, (I think Ryan Johnson is the 7th), and it means all 200 rhd in college or Jr's get another year or 2 as well. That's at least a good thing.

Im not singling out your comment alone, more the attitude currently of the sabres fanbase because it is interesting to me.  The team sucks, but we want to extend everyone to long term deals?  We can't trade peterka because he's going to be a superstar?  We need to spend to the cap, but who are we going to spend the money on?  After like a day of free agency Jeff Skinner was one of the best free agents left.

The way I see it, Byram is currently dman 3 or 4 with warts that the analytic community is quick to point out.  But hes still super young too.   A 2 year deal still gives you leverage to sign or do a sign and trade next year.  I'd think the last thing all parties would want is a 5+ year deal.

Tell me I'm wrong.  Is the goaltending improved? No.  By trading JJP, did Adams damage the offense? Yes.  Kesselring and Timmins were 17 minutes D last season on non-playoffs teams.  That makes them 3rd line D.  Are the Sabres improved?  Maybe marginally, but they aren't close to a playoff team.  Sorry, but those are the facts.

Goaltending could very well be better, they added a guy who might help out a lot, we shall see.

JJP gets replaced by Norris and added production by up and comers.

The defense is better

The team is another year older. I seriously doubt this team will fold with the lead like last years team did at start of last season. I'd be very surprised if we see them losing games again after taking leads into third period where other team just runs over them.

You're assuming a lot here. Theres going to be drop off offensively, mainly to guys like McLeod, Zucker and Tuch.

The team is still soft. And until they change that, none of this will matter.

There are a lot of ifs involved in this team hitting its ceiling. We all see it and all we can do is hope.

They need to come out of blocks strong and get points early when teams are getting their legs and figuring things out. Once mid season hits and teams start grinding for playoff spots the Sabres “softness” will be exposed.

Manageable cap, with the ability to move him comfortably now.   Either we take him into the season or hes moved.  At least hes signed.  Get Devon done thanks.

I wonder if maybe he’s not actually fighting for his job

Especially since he picked Jarmo.  If they don’t make playoffs, and Adams becomes POHO and Jarmo becomes GM, then you see more conclusive proof that winning is not a priority, as if we haven’t seen it since the lazy hiring of Krueger.

Can I pretend that this counts as a good free agent signing?

I would say yes. If the GM couldn't get a fair-value return for him in a trade, then it made sense for the player and the franchise to stay here. With him, our blue line unit is more than solid, it can be quite good. Of course, there is an assumption that Power will advance as a player and that Samuelsson stabilizes his game. What this short-term deal is give the franchise more time to seek better options if they arise. There are a lot of things to criticize our GM for, but not for how he handled the Byram situation.
