Fall/Winter 2015-2016 TV and Movies

I was going to mention this yesterday but never got around to it:  There was a movie on ION last night called "A Prince for Christmas" that is notable only because it was filmed in East Aurora.  Typical Christmas chick flick.... I watched the beginning with my wife and it was very familiar WNY scenery.  The further they got into the plot, however, the more I couldn't watch it.  By the time the protagonist finally met the prince I had to leave the room; the dialog was so corny it was unwatchable.

But.... yay WNY.

Oh gawd.  My wife is addicted to those movies.  I'm sure I'll have to suffer through it at some point.

This makes me wonder what exactly I am.  I'm not one of the old timers and I'm not one of the kids.  I'm somewhere in between.  So what the hell am I?

And as for fall/winter TV, February and Better Call Saul need to get here soon.  To a much lesser extent, I also want the new episodes of It's Always Sunny coming up in January.

You are... turning 40.

I've heard good things about the new Netflix series Narcos about drug kingpin Pablo Escobar and the DEA pursuit of him.

I saw Spectre last night and I thought it was terrible.

They managed to make Christoph Walz boring. That is criminal.

The whole movie had very little contrast, nothing popped.

Every character acted like a robot. Nobody had passion for what they were doing. The only time anybody felt like a person was when Bond recognized the exact version of Rolls Royce that was driving toward him from an absurd distance. Bond is a car dork!

The plot was so lazy and boring. It did the usual globe-trotting where Bond's mission takes him all over the world. We went to the UK, Austria, Morocco, Mexico, Japan, and probably some other places as well.

I normally love this kind of thing, but the movie did such a horrible job connecting these locations. I never felt any significance or gravitas, and very few of the shots were given time to breathe.

The secret society angle was brushed aside after the 10 minute scene of people sitting at a neat looking table. Apparently if you get the leader, they just fall apart completely.

Christoff Walz was apparently the architect of every sour experience in Bond's life. He never had any plans other than "terrorist stuff" or worrying about James Bond. There were no stakes because they tried to make all the stakes personal, but these people don't act like people and they barely know one another.

Bond gets tortured and his brain is messed up (?), but then this gets swept away too.

At the end of the movie Walz is doing the Joker-esque KILL ME FINISH IT thing and James decides not to and shows him his empty gun "no bullets." This was treated like a big character moment, but it had nothing to do with anything. I guess Bond was supposed to be resisting Walz getting into his head and not letting his anger control him? Walz never really did much to him in the movie but talk to him (exposit to the audience) about all the stuff he did in the past to kill Bond's ladies. Then he tortures him with some weird machine. Wow.

The pacing was bad, everything felt like it took forever. The movie was 150 MINUTES LONG. It felt like an episode of Archer (22 minute show) where nobody has fun and nothing funny happens.

I DID like the shot where Bond is strolling calmly on the edge of a rooftop to an assassination. I also like when he's drunk and points his gun at a mouse and asks it who its working for.

Oh and nothing was sexy. The scene in the beginning whith the lady from the matrix was really weird half kissing along with mumbled exposition that I caught none of.

The intro had all that weird tentacle porn stuff... super strange.

And the "main romance" was so boring by the book James Bond stuff. I'll protect you. I don't want to sleep with you. But actually I LOVE YOU!!

The worst part is that they tried to afford this some sort of deeper meaning. Like the characters really had some sort of connection.

I agree with WC that the fight scene on the train was awesome. Brutal.

Well thought out post. I just think we see the movie differently. It does seem to be one that polarizes a bit, unlike Skyfall which was almost universally liked. I won't address everything you said but to the bolded points:

I really felt that the actors were putting soul into their roles, didn't get the feeling that they weren't trying at all. To each his own I suppose. Craig to me seemed to be playing James the same way he did in the previous 3.

As for the bit with the needle:

When Bond gets tortured, I believe the reason he ends up ok is because Waltz says something to the effect that the needle had to come into contact with the exact right spot. The scene seemed to imply that it wasn't a fool proof process. There was reasonable doubt that it would work on the first try. Thus, he tries again just before the watch is thrown.

I strongly disagree about the end bit, that it didn't have anything to do with anything. Read on:

The whole movie I thought built up well to that moment. The story was largely, as referenced by James and Madeleine Swann's in depth conversation on the train, about James actually realizing he had a choice in regards to his career. She propositions the idea to him on the train that he doesn't have to do what he's doing, he can chose otherwise, a choice he says he hasn't really considered. At the end, it's a visually cinematic moment, with M on the one side of the bridge and Madeleine on the other. The choice isn't really about whether to kill Waltz's character specifically or not. It's framed as James choosing his to do his job as an assassin, and then return to M, or chose Madeleine, and a different life. He chooses Madeleine in that moment and puts aside his career, something we haven't seen much of before. Thought it was a rather powerful moment in the movie.

As for "nothing is sexy", Lea Seydoux pretty much encapsulates attraction for me in the movie. She was amazing and multilayered I thought. How you can say nothing is sexy with her in the movie and her performance...consider me boggled. :P

I can't be the only one who wants to see 'Krampus'

Oh, I'm definitely seeing it.

Supergirl-So far so good

Quantico-Keeps me guessing

Gotham-The Rise Of The Villains has been pretty frickin cool

The Flash- Meh

The only one of these that I watch is Gotham.  Not much of a superhero fan, but I really like that show.  The first season was good too, but this season has been crazier for sure.

The first season for a bit crappy down the stretch with that weird surgeon transplanting eyes. I have no idea what the point of that whole subplot was.
