Complaint Thursdays

Sorry to hear, iTlnSn.  Got a couple new complaints this week:

1) My dad had his CT scan and a visit with a specialist on Monday, and he really liked the doctor, so that's good.  But, the doctor wants to be very sure he gets everything, so unless after a few more scans (MRI and PET) they see zero signs of bone involvement, they're planning to remove a good sized section of his jaw and graft in a piece of his leg.  I really shouldn't be complaining about this because the doctor gives him a 100% chance at a full recovery and return to work, but that's going to be a MAJOR surgery with significant hospital and healing time, and I won't be able to be there or see him until 3 days after because of the new job in Baltimore.  :(

2) I've been trying like hell to find an apartment to sublet or a room to rent in the Baltimore area during the week for the next couple of months, and Craiglist has a TON of listings that looked promising.  Except the majority of the people haven't bothered responding to my email, and a few that did requested contact by text and sent me links to sign up for some other website like subletapartments.com, subletentry.com, jessicasroomate.com, etc... all mirror sites for this BS website called Roomster.  Roomster lets you post your interest in renting and also see places other people have for rent, and it's supposedly a site to vet potential roommates because it links with Facebook and other social networks to confirm identities.  Except when you try to send or receive a message through the site, it won't show you the GD message unless you pay for a subscription!  On top of that, the place on Craigslist is nowhere to be seen on Roomster, so they're all fake postings just to try and drive traffic to this other website.  I've had some a$$hole texting me off and on for a few days at all hours trying to get me to sign up, even after I cussed them out and told them to leave me alone.  Finally blocked their numbers, but JC what a frustrating waste of time.  I want to find whomever set up that site and beat them with a baseball bat.

3) WTF is Kraft trying to pass off as American cheese slices these days???  Lord knows I'd rather get the good stuff, but been trying to be economical with my lunches and this stuff has gone seriously downhill.  The old recipe was a fairly solid (but pliable) square that you could easily fold and tear into whatever size pieces you wanted to fit your bread.  This new stuff is only semi-solid (sticks / melts to the wrapper) and doesn't fold and crease but rather stretches and eventually tears like some terrible primordial cheese-like goo.

Y'all've read d4rk's post by now.

Another option is me moving to Buffalo. Problem is- work. I'd gladly move if I could find something that pays as much or better than what I'm doing now. Other problem is, I really do have a life here in Roch. I think of all the things I'd miss the most, it would be the horse rescue I volunteer at. It's out in Lima, so if I lived in Buffalo, it's a helluva drive- too much to make every week for a few hours. You spend that much time/effort at a place, they become family.

I'm looking for work anyways- the problem is, you type in any kind of art/designer/illustrator into your search terms and you get "sandwich artist". Or always graphic design, which isn't what I do or enjoy doing.

Hoping to teach myself aftereffects/video editing, then I'll go harass the Sabres into letting me do some of their graphics. That would be pretty amazing I think. I just often feel it isn't possible. I often hate myself for choosing art over a million other degrees.

So, is a "sandwich artist" what Subway's calling their employees these days, or is it something legit?

The biggest issue with Artspace is that they want you to be an artist. I'm not. I'm just a guy looking to share space with artists. The closest I've found is The Foundry, which seems a little less snobby. I have to check it out at some point.

My parents tell stories of renting two bedroom apartments on one weeks entry level accountant pay back in the 70's. I can't even get a studio for one weeks pay.

I'm not sure if I understand correctly, but you are an artist looking for cheap work space somewhere in Buffalo?  Is that right?

My buddy (like 15 years ago) rented space in the old Pierce Arrow factory on Elmwood.  It was totally converted over to art rental spaces.  Is that still going on?  Did you look into this?

I'm not an artist. That's the trick. I'm just a guy looking for somewhere to work. I guess maybe artwork could be part of it. I want to be able to read and work on studying architecture/sustainability in my free time.

Pierce Arrow's space appears to be for film artists. Not sure they'd have me. But who knows. It's worth looking into.

I guess maybe I need to try to bill myself as an artist...of sorts.

I'm sorry to hear about your dad.  Good luck to him!

I hope your housing situation in Baltimore opens up.  I have found Craig's list to be largely unreliable in the past; can you target a neighborhood you like and just wander around looking for "for rent" signs or have you considered a commercial rental situation with a rental office and the like?  Not sure what your situation or budget is exactly.

Regarding the cheese!  I am a food snob, so be forewarned.  But...that stuff you are complaining about (rightly so) is chemical goo and you really shouldn't be eating that.  Save your pennies and buy some real cheese, and then don't eat any cheese when you can't afford your next batch.  That would be my advice.

Good cheese is quite expensive, as is good, healthy eating, generally speaking, in this county.  It's a shame.

My information is now 15 years out of date at least, but at that time, the Pierce Arrow facility was definitely not limited to film studies.  It was mostly filled with guys like my buddy, slinging paint at canvas and hoping for the best.  I do the same myself in my free time so I can relate.

Are you an architecture student?  Do you have an architecture degree? I'm sorry if I need to go 3 pages back and get the full story, I'm kind of jumping in at the end I guess.

Thanks for the well-wishes (to you and others) about my dad.

Unfortunately for Baltimore I live just far enough away (about an hour and a half) for it to be convenient to just drive around to check it out.  And I'm trying to find something inexpensive since I'll be paying rent on top of my mortgage, and cheap places in B-more are sometimes way too sketchy to consider.  I saw a place last Sat. that was $600/month for a room in a 3 BR townhouse (shared bathroom with one other person), and the house next door was boarded up, along with several places on the next block that looked real bad.  Oof.  I have friends in western MD who've offered to let me stay there for cheap, but it'd be a 40 min. commute.  I may do it because it's inexpensive and still closer than my house, but wish there were something more convenient that wouldn't break the bank.  The only other alternatives I've found so far are a furnished short-term apt lease for almost $900/month or renting a room in a house which is convenient (walking distance to work) but very expensive ($200/week for a room sharing a bathroom with 3 people) and has a high potential for awkwardness since the woman is a close family friend of my new boss.  No thank you.

As for the cheese, I'm in agreement with you; I'd much rather get a good Boar's Head Muenster or provolone than relegate myself to Kraft singles.  My love of cheese (and good food in general) is at odds with my current budget.  :(

100% chance at a full recovery? It doesn't get any better than that, Bio. It sucks that he has to suffer. I'm sure he will be better than ever. That's what those old dudes do. My dad is not only still chugging along after a dozen "you should be dead" issues...He's flourishing! I am sure that your dad will be feistier than ever.

A 40 min commute is nothing. Jump on that offer. I drive that much or more to the site, to drive 40 mins or more to the hall to do class, and 40 mins home. Hell. I drive 40 mins to watch the Amerks play.

No cheese is better than processed cheese. I eat my sandwiches dry. No cheese. No mayo. I am an odd one though.

I know... I think I'm mostly feeling guilty that I can't be there, but I'm also worried for him going through this major surgery and having to recover from it.  My stepmom loves him dearly, but they have next to nothing in the way of a support network where they live, which makes me feel even worse about being unavailable to help.  Hopefully all goes smoothly and by the time I'm ready to move out west he'll be good as new.

People who walk on the left in an organized race where they're told to walk on the right. I don't care that you were running, you currently are not, so get the F outta my way. Oh, and if you run at the speed of walking...you, too, need to get the F outta my way.

I see someone did the Corpulent Challenge today.

Just got back from vacation and picked up the dog from the sitters. Tipped an extra $5 a day and on the way out she snidely remarked "that won't cover the carpet cleaning" well you too bitch, I won't bring him back here then.

Yes. Next year if I do it I'm going to lie about my time to get into the red group just to avoid the frustration. I probably ran closer to 4 miles than 3.5 just weaving in and out.

Last time I did it was at RIT. A co-worker and I started at the literal end of the pack. End result indicated we ran past like 3000 people. I would say 40% of that was on the grass and not the actual course.

2 inches of rain expected on Saturday where we are going camping in WNY. Might have to wait a day to get the F### out of Jersey.

This whole weekend is going to be a wash.

Same exact situation here. So we made a last second switch to leave early tomorrow morning and enjoy the day tomorrow.

Will be missing the draft.
