Senators used to do this deliberately once in a while on the power play back in the day by having Chara blast it wide of the net short side so it would bounce off the back kickplate to the far side of the net to an open Spezza or Alfredsson. Stopping it relied on the goalie reading the incoming shot as missing the traffic in front on the short side and making a sliding save to the far side, which was tough to do.
