dudacek
You guys complicate things too much. Lehner plays a week in the AHL to get his conditioning up. Gets called up and gets his start. Plays a lot if he's better than Linus, not so much if he's worse. That's assuming Ullmark goes on a good run between now and then.
Doohickie
So now you're The Big Linus? I'm thinking "Linus: The One." But I don't want to get ahead of myself. That might not happen for good year or so. This is all idle speculation of course. *IF* Ullmark is better (the premise I started with) there is simply no need to develop him in the AHL. The reason to keep him up here would be to round the team out, and prepare them as a cohesive group. With Lehner as #2. I'm not questioning your thought that Ullmark needs seasoning. I am questioning the logic that no matter how well he does he should go down. It's the Reinhart argument all over again. If he's playing at this level equal to or better to Lehner, further AHL time is unnecessary. He'd be outplaying a bonafide NHL goalie. Exactly. And where did Reinhardt end up last year? ...AHL conditioning stint. I'm pretty sure that would work, but I know nothing of CBA stuff. Otherwise, back up work I guess. I don't know how he'd play his way back into shape. If Ullmark is playing insane lights out goal when Lehner comes back, I can see sending Lehner back for a conditioning stint, then bringing him up and sending The Big Johnson down. If Ullmark has falters, Ullmark goes down. But if Ullmark is fine at the NHL level, why not keep him up and have a two-headed Swedish Monster? French Collection
I like Ullmark, so far, and was hoping he could see some NHL action. Unless he is lights out, Lehner will be given the opportunity to be the #1 guy. As TBJ stated, he doesn't need to clear waivers so he's the easiest to send down. A solid, extended showing would make Johnson expendable, muddying the waters. The Dominator played parts of 2 seasons in the minors, for the Hawks organization. He was behind Belfour, who had won the Calder and Vezina trophies.
Weave
Why does he have to be lights out to stay up? This is a strange requirement IMO. Why is simply good enough for the NHL not good enough to keep him up? Edited November 3, 2015 by We've
Doohickie
Because he's easy to send down and because they can develop his game more, giving him lots of playing time without having to worry about Lehner's playing time.

Why is simply good enough for the NHL not good enough to keep him up? If Lehner is going to get 3 out of every 4 starts you send Ullmark to the AHL to continue working on his game as opposed to riding the bench. Next summer you have an open competition if Lehner is mediocre.

LGR4GM
If Ullmark is outplaying Lehner, which is the premise I was working with, he's not sitting 3 out of 4 games though. hmm, I don't know if would be comfortable working off that premise. I think Ullmark is going to be better than Lehner but idk if it will happen immediately. For me it really depends on Ullmark getting better and seeing how he adapts to teams game planning for him. LGR4GM
It's a "what if". It's not a prediction. Yes, I understand that. I was taking the conversation in a different direction. If Ullmark is better than he starts over Lehner, Murray doesn't strike me as a guy who will interfere and force Lehner to get playing time. When Lehner comes back though I would expect Bylsma to view him as the #1 and give him a fair shot.

I think Lehner long term is the answer. In GMTM I trust!

He's pretty funny too, according to Byslma. They get a kick out of him swearing in English, and the first day of practice he asked Byslma something that just floored him, something he was cracking up about a 22 year old asking him. He wouldn't tell the reporters the question though
