Vanek should have been let go years ago when Edmonton signed him to an offer sheet. One of the worst moves in Sabres history was when the Sabres matched it. However, when they traded him to the Islanders it was one of the best moves in Sabres history. He is gone from Buffalo forever thank goodness!

Darcy blinked on that one. We totally should have let him go

I think it was more the lack of a quality center.

He did great playing on the third line with two great centers playing on other lines

Imo, he was kept was due to Darcy fudging things up w/ Drury and Briere. If one of them were kept, Buffalo may have passed on Edmonton's offer to Vanek. Fans would have been in a complete uproar had the Sabres lost all 3 players.

Ya, the fans might have stopped buying tickets or something...

IMO, Vanek is a prime example of a player not being able to live up to expectations, realistic or not. Vanek will always be connected to July 1st, 2007 and the RFA offer from the Oilers. He was never able to live up to being the player the Sabres kept and the inflated offer the Sabres decided to match. The player being the same but the circumstances around 07.01.07 and the contract being different I would guess the perception would be different as well.

Should Darcy have been smarter then, I wonder? I mean, we've been watching the Oilers be a complete sh*tshow since they went to the Cup Finals in '06. Was this all predictable? Should Darcy have seen that the Oil were primed to make some big mistakes and let Vanek be the first one? The Ducks let them have Penner and it didn't hurt them at all. Imagine if Darcy had called the Lowe's bluff and stuck him with Vanek?

It would have been nearly impossible for him to let Vanek walk after he let Drury and Briere walk.  Lowe played him well.

What if he'd done it though? What if he'd had the balls to say "well, if I don't get to pay the guys I want, I'm sure as hell not going to pay Thomas Vanek." Imagine how big of an FU to Golisano and Quinn that would have been? Would we be erecting a statue of Darcy right now with all of the high end prospects he'd have gotten from the Oilers with those picks? We all know Vanek wouldn't have changed that team's course.

I don't think Quinn would have allowed it, honestly.

But it is an interesting scenario.

From today's Mnpls Star-Tribune: ...Last week Vanek said “my game is about setting guys up.”

Vanek has transitioned from a goal scorer to a guy who once knew how to do it but can't do it anymore so he sets others up. Scoring means you're putting yourself in vulnerable positions to get hurt. Vanek has broken has jaw before; I don't think he was ever the same after that. I think he's shy about taking abuse so now he specializes in making passes for scoring plays.

Problem is the team pays $6.5 mil to the guy who can score and that's who the fans pay for when they sell out the arena.

So no, don't sign Vanek, he can't/won't produce goals anymore and you don't pay 6.5 for an assist maker.

Absolutely no way Quinny lets DR take the picks after going on record saying any offer would be matched.

You definitely DO pay 6.5 mil for an assist maker, depending on the level of quality. The issue with Vanek is like you say, he was signed with the expectation of being a goal scorer. As a playmaker, Vanek is probably a tad underrated, but he's not worth 6.5 million.

It's like DeLuca said. It's the weight of expectation that got him.

I don't like Thomas Vanek's game.  I know he scores goals but what else does he bring to the table?

Schnitzel.

Ok, seriously.  He's strong on the puck--very strong on the puck, and he takes a lot of sticks to his body when he screens a goaltender, yet he hangs in there.  It's almost impossible to push him out of the slot.

I remain of the opinion that I articulated last week in the Round 2 thread:  His main problem is that he is too wound up.

I could easily see Vanek become a Dave Adreychuk-like PP specialist.

He'd have to take a massive paycut though.

This is exactly why the school of thought that trading Miller "will finally end all the talk about Miller." We'll still see crazy threads like this. Vanek is gone. Forever.

Well we can only hope.  Guys like Vanek don't win Cups.  We are trying to win the Cup, aren't we?
