Terry Pegula buying the Buffalo Sabres discussion

Remember the rich guy who was all but ready to sign a deal for the sarbes before TG did? His name was everywhere and he had plenty of $$. Didnt pan out.

Except he didn't have "plenty of $$." He would have been another Steve Donner. He had (probably) just enough $'s to get a deal done but then would have been seriously undercapitalized thereafter.

There were a couple of other people interested at the time that Sabres nearly became the Hamsters that you didn't hear about, just like today. We aren't discussing the others because to this point in time they haven't met the criteria to be serious bidders. Don't know that Pegula will be the next owner, but he actually COULD be and it's definitely interesting watching it all play out.

A couple of points,

He wants to buy the BILLS!!!!!!!!!! But not until Ralph is gone... If Sunday's game didn't give him an heart attack, nothing will....

Price for Sabres went up 25M overnight...

Nice to know he's a hockey Dad...

Who was Hamister's "money man"? I believe he went to prison eventually, for some financial malfeasance or other. Todd Beeman, Berman? I remember he was supposed to be a Buffalo guy (literally) who was a Sabres fan, and at the press conference he said he remembered going to games in the old "stadium". When he didn't say "The Aud," I figured he was a fraud.

So the question becomes: what would the secret handshake question be to prove Pegs is indeed a real Sabre fan? What song did the Earl of Bud dance to? Where did the Knoxes sit?

Hamilton's update from about half an hour ago - link

So,

No letter of intent signed

No formal offer from Pegula yet

No introduction at the governors meeting next week

Quinn is a minority owner and would be gone upon sale

Well, 1 out of four ain't bad.

Back to work folks, nothing to see here.

Sidney Crosby's contract expires in three years.

It's fine to throw some cold water on the story like Paul did. I also was incredulous when someone wrote the deal could be done by the end of the year, which is four weeks ago (edit: or away!).

But doesn't common sense have to enter into the discussion? How can OSP say no? It would be financial suicide. The fan base would be very, very angry and more than willing to take it out on Tom's bottom line.

It was Todd Berman, and yes, he did wind up in jail. Obviously there's no way to back this up, but I get the feeling the team may very well be Ballsillie's today if Hamister's joke of a deal had been accepted.

Maybe that's a premium for getting rid of Quinn!

XB, I almost always agree with your astute posts, but I can't do so this time.

Top 40 players not with their original teams:

Pronger

Chara

Byfuglien

Gaborik

Kovalchuk

Thornton

Heatley

Brad Richards

Hossa

nice retort. I guess I was thinking skaters and not goal-keepers.

I would probably remove Boyle from that list. Byfuglien is the biggest surprise, but let's say he remains legit.

I'm kind of wondering if this list is thin or robust.

Phil Kessel is probably Toronto's best player, so lets add him too.

We might also think of adding Brian Gionta.

That's may be enough to at least challenge my premise.

My instinct however was to look at Kane, Toews, Crosby, M. Richards, Carter, Ovechkin, Semin,Staal, Backstrom, Sedins, Kopitar, Stasny, Stamkos, and think they have all been homegrown.

and a majority of those players are still very early on in their careers. lots can happen, and usually does. the brodeurs, yzermans, and modanos (even HE has moved on...granted, he's beyond retirement age) are extremely rare.

It does seem to be turning back the other way with the truly elite players. Teams are locking them up longterm very early now. As you said, only time will tell if these guys do become that Brodeur-Yzerman franchise-type.

Based on playoff performance, Briere should be on the list as well.

In any case, I think you are absolutely right that teams that are consistently strong are built through the draft. However, I also think that a couple of players every year in the elite or near-elite category change teams every year, and that some of those guys are real difference-makers. Imagine the Sabres with Soupy, Pronger and a minimum-wage kid on D instead of Leopold, Morrisson and Rivet, and Briere, Drury, Hossa and a minimum-wage kid instead of Pommer, Connolly, Hecht and Stafford.

For whatever reason, the Sabres haven't been in the mix on any of those guys. It may be because DR is in love with his draftees -- or maybe because TG banned all contracts in excess of, say, $30MM, eliminating the Sabres from contention for an elite import.

If this sale happens, the indications are that the new guy will put the Sabres into the mix when Sid (gasp!) and his ilk comes onto the market. The Sabres will still need to make the right decisions -- so they end up with another Sid and not another Vanek -- but at least it will be possible.

For better or worse, I think the Sabres thought after 2006 that 3 evenly balanced, fast , and defensively sound forward lines with 7-8 potential 20 goals scorers would overwhelm

most teams. They really gave this up last year, and went to a checking third line. What hasn't compensated in that structure is an overwhelming top line. I really think they thought more scoring from the defense this year would open up the ice for the top 2 lines, but it hasn't translated into many goals yet. It still could.

I agree with everything here, although I don't think they were planning on relying heavily on defensive scoring as much as on much stronger production from the so-called "top 6."

I also think they were blindsided by how much guys like Max, Vanek, Pommer and Roy were negatively impacted by the loss of the co-captains, as well as by TC's continuing injury issues -- and that being blindsided thusly was poor planning.

Probably not really meant for this purpose, but I sent a message to Pegs via his company website supporting his potential purchase of the Sabres. Feel free to do the same...

http://www.eastresources.com/index.php?page=contact-us

"I was totally going to buy the Sabres, but then some guy named LabattBlue had my email inbox flooded with constant comments."

Thanks a lot blue. :D

And if I am not mistaken, that's not his company any more. Didn't he sell it? That's why he's worth billions, from the sale of his gas company, right?

You could always send that message to his recording studio in Nashville.

Well at least we know where Pegula was on Tuesday when the story was blowing up:

"Tuesday marked the first of planned monthly meetings between the architects, construction team and Penn State to discuss plans for the ice arena.

Battista said representatives from Crawford, Bohlin Cywinski Jackson and Mortenson Construction, along with ice specialist Tim Moore and donor Terry Pegula, were all present.

The meeting started with a speech by Pegula outlining his vision for the arena.

'I think it was important for everyone to hear him and hear the passion in his voice,' Battista said."

As a side note, one of the visions he has for the arena is that it have the fastest surface in North America.
