Some people have the worst luck. One of my aunts was born deaf, went blind relatively early in life, and now was just diagnosed with Alzheimers. I'm not sure any combination of livable ailments (the Alzheimers is in the early stages) is worse than those three.

My best to her. Sometimes we all learn from those with the toughest rows to hoe. Does she have a philosophy about her challenges you can share? Personal -- not an assignment.

Here's mine. Word going 'round is that we are all getting 3 weeks temporary layoff in the 4th quarter. Yay, 20% pay cut for Christmas! This happens too frequently. Love my job. Not fond of the organization I do it for. We are owned by a consortium of equity investors whose goal is to pump up the value of the company so they can sell it piece by piece. They are quite up front about it. Any business unit that didn't reach their financial goals gets hit with these TLO's to reduce costs and bump up their balance sheet. They are quite cut throat about it.

Of course, the following quarter we'll all be working 55 hour work weeks because we'll be behind in our customer commitments. :wallbash:

So strange hoping that your business unit gets sold.

My free market views are well known. I hope my human being affinity is, as well. I came of age when Gordon Gekko was explaining "Greed ... is good". I understood the math and the market's craving for efficiency. I also worked for a large firm rationalizing (love that term) its workforce. While I understand the inevitability of equilibrium, I will never forget my bosses and the personal consequences to them They were twenty five and thirty years older than me. Changing the rules on human beings at that stage of their careers was unpleasant. I'll not forget the humanity. I wore a yellow tie, slicked back my hair, but learned great lessons in compassion. I learned employers were counterparties, not benevolent providers. Stay relevant is the recommendation I make to the young today.

I admire your positive attitude.

My mum was in a car accident yesterday. Woman in a big SUV rear ended her at 45+ mph, slamming her into the car in front of her as well. She was coming from a vet appt, so had a cat in the car as well.

Woman fled the scene. Luckily, both the couple in the other car and my mum got her license plate number, so hopefully they catch her.

My mum is ok for the most part. Car is totalled. Cat is also ok we think.

Who the hell slams into another car to the point it's totalled and thinks it's ok to just drive off? WTF people

Oh yikes... I hope both your mom and the cat are okay and the cops can find the SOB to cover the car damage.  :(  Thank goodness they weren't seriously injured!

Might not be worth it for you.  As Bio said there were good government rebates for installing it but I think they are over now.

Yeah the rebates were a big part of what made it worthwhile for my friends because they drastically cut down on the time to recoup your installation costs.  Those had already expired when I installed my heat pump last fall, and it's possible they could be revived later but I wouldn't hold my breath given our current Congress.

And sorry about your Aunt, Blue.  :(

My complaint today is the Canadian Dollar.

Although it's a fantastic Friday event that I purchased my mini-pack tickets for the Sabres a few minutes ago.  My $1,200 American bill is quickly going to show up as probably $1,600 plus on my visa......

Funny, the Canadian dollar was going to be mentioned in the fantastic Friday thread tomorrow when I'm living it up in Toronto :nana:

Derrico,

You understand that the powers that be want the Canadian dollar right back where it belongs, right?

-----

I don't like to complain, but the friggin' City of Halifax drives me crazy.

I wan't to repair / replace an old deck (using reclaimed wood) that was constructed some time ago, with the proper permits and inspections and resulted in a upward assessment of our houses value, therefore increased property taxes.

In the past these projects did not require a permit.  Now they do.  I am considering not getting one, but am sure that the nosey (read - pain in the ass) neighbours will complain and then I will be in deep do-do.

I am sure the city will re-assess the house again for this *improvement* and raise the assessment again.

We are looking to move and we have started doing the minor things to ready our house for listing and this is one of those things.

Not sure how it is in Nova Scotia but out in Ontario any permits that are filed are sent directly to the Municipal Property Assessment Corp and they have that info the next time they assess your property.  I don't think it should be that big of a deal since you guys are moving but any projects you think you can get away with not having a permit is the way too go.  But like you said, you get caught and there will be fines.  I know I've taken a few chances and never been caught but they were all interior work so it was easier to get away with.  As far as the government knows, my house is still a ###### hole, in similar condition to when I bought it 5 years ago and they had better assess it that way!  What your describing isn't constricted to just Halifax my friend.

On Tuesday we finally had a buyer request a showing of my house (hooray!).  On Wed. morning they requested a second showing (double hooray) and this morning their realtor confirmed they are working on an offer.  Sounds great, right?  Except when they sent the offer it was for $10k LESS than the current price and wanted seller's assistance, so effectively they're offering $92,000 for a house built in 1995 with central air, a brand new heat pump, and new hot water heater that is worth somewhere between $107-$110,000.  That's not even a lowball offer; that's insulting.  We're going to come up with a counter offer tonight in case they're just bluffing, but I suspect we're so far apart there's little chance of coming to a sale agreement.  FAAAAACK.

And work sucks right now.  I can't get a GD thing done because all day people have been emailing back and forth with partially updated information about stuff that wasn't our fault but is becoming our problem.  Now we have an emergency priority project to do on top of the already absurd list of tasks.   :wallbash:

I don't have time on my side to wait for the right offer!  If I don't have someone within the next 2, maybe 3 weeks I need to rent it out, which I really don't want to do but I'd do it before selling my house to a cheap SOB like this idiotic would-be buyer.

This is an extremely minor thing compared to some of the other resent issues posted, but it's the end of the day, I'm tired and I want to complain.  I hate it when people who have been in my line of work longer than I have still don't know the basics.  They try to get by with that "Shucks, I didn't know that!" attitude when they know better.  And they KNOW I know better, which makes it worse.

On the bright side, I scored tickets to see Sir Paul McCartney in row 3.  Woot!   :D

I've got two driving related ones from this morning.

1. I had to slam my breaks this morning because a guy decided to make a left turn off of a side street right in front of me.  He then tried to move over into the right lane as a car was right there.  So this guy, within about 15 seconds of leaving his neighborhood, almost caused two wrecks.  Impressive really.

2. I wound up behind a guy with a bumper sticker that read "f___ off, I'm texting", with the F bomb spelled out.  So this d-bag likes to advertise that not only is he a classless ass, but he also gladly puts others at risk.  I would gladly rip that bumper sticker off of a car if I ever saw it in a parking lot (although, I suppose it does serve as some warning to give him a ton of space).  I don't understand why someone would put that garbage on their car... then again, most bumper stickers are garbage and an eyesore.

I was always pretty proud of my "Back Off: I'm going to fart." sticker placed over the tailpipe of my Chevy Caprice as a teenager. I think that one stands the test of time.  :P

Why are they called bumper stickers if they're almost never placed on the bumper?  One of life's great mysteries.

Don't ruin my fun by answering the question, any of you crazy literal posters out there (you know who you are).

I've been at work every day since last Monday. A couple days have been 10-12 hour days to make sure things are getting done. I am exhausted and just trying to make it til Friday afternoon. I have something back to back today followed by an in person appointment.  Still have to finish stuff for my promotion.  I don't even know what my apartment looks like.  Only good news is I canceled cable 2 weeks ago so I am saving 90$ a month now.

Well off to my back to backs, no lunch today.

Had to use my personal credit card to purchase my plane ticket and hotel for a business trip (corporate policy now).  Did so, with the assumption that I would be paid back within a week, as I was/am worried that the $1,800 will be on my card when the billing cycle ends, meaning I get slapped with the interest.  I was assured that the check would be in today.  Guess what! no check!  And Corporate policy is also to not reimburse for interest you accrue on your credit card.  I'm so pissed.  I didn't even want to go on this trip.

My wife's brother was a delivery driver for Home Depot. 3 years ago a woman went through a stop sign and totaled his truck. He ended up with a painful back injury and had to stop working. Doctors couldn't ease the pain, so prescribed OxyContin. He got hooked on them and drinking to kill the pain. Despite his wife trying to regulate, he found ways to get them. It destroyed his liver. We got a call Monday night that he was in hospital. When we got there he was removed from life support and died after 4 hours. 51 years old, wife and 3 kids, member of Christian rock band at church. All because someone ran a stop sign.

Ouch.

Just booked a hotel with Hilton, and the reservation specialist transferred me to a hard sell Hilton timeshare thingy after asking me if I wanted to listen to an update on my HiltonHonors (I thought they were going to tell me how many points I had)..........apparently my update was the opportunity to buy a timeshare in Hawaii, FFS.
