I thought they said on the broadcast last night that it tied the team record.

they did.

The good news is that they are finding ways to not lose in regulation, but for some reason don't seem to handle the pressure of OT very well.

I don't know. But fighting hard in every game right down to the end is good for them, They just need to start coming out on top of these games

Yup.

The Eastern Conference hasn't begun to stratify yet, but when it does these OTL points are going to be hugely important.

It's just too bad they don't realize that "the end" means 65 minutes, not 60.

What this team needs to solve “most” of its problem is for Tage, Alex and Rasmus to step up. There are other issues but them three playing up to their ceiling and they’d be in first place right now.

Well a lot of us here talked about needing to learn how to play together 5 on 5 with better goal tending, so far they are checking that box.

Now they need to learn how to do it 3 on 3.

Improving the coaching would help in that regard.  The same guy drawing up schemes for the PP and late in the game seems to be the same one drawing up the schemes for very late in the game (aka OT) as well.

You (usually) can't fix stupid, but you can fire it and put someone better in its place.  😉

Here you go

The NHL record for the most consecutive regular season overtime games is five, achieved by the Montreal Canadiens from October 27 to November 8, 1999. This is a team record, and since this is a relatively recent record, it is likely that there is no definitive individual record for most consecutive overtime games in a row. It's worth noting that the record for most playoff overtime games in a single season is 14, set by the Los Angeles Kings in 2013-14.

We have tied the record... 1 more to take it.

That's not true, we TIED the team record. This also occurred in 2022 from March 10th-March 23rd.

The Google AI on my phone says the old record was 4 in a row by Edmonton. Can anyone confirm this?

No Sabres had 5 in 2022 as well...see above...not sure if there are more than this

Toronto and Montreal also achieved this in the Stanley Cup Final in 1951 with all 5 games going to OT, with Toronto winning the series and Cup 4-1

There's no science or math behind this, but I believe that if they win half of these OT games, which should be a reasonable expectation, they'll be fine as far as how it impacts their final point total.  That said, it's clearly more important to get that 2nd point against division and Eastern Conference foes such as Boston, Toronto, Columbus, etc., as ceding the "extra" point to teams they're competing with for the playoffs is a killer.  Not as big of a deal to lose the 2nd point to Utah or other Western Conference teams.

Given how many they've already lost, it's going to be difficult to win half of their OT games for the entire season, but at this point, I'd take half from this point forward AND we need some of those to come against divisional and Eastern Conference teams.  It boils down to individuals stepping up and making a play - a player with a chance in OT has to bury it and/or a goalie with a chance to make a big save has to make it.  So far, outside of UPL in the Washington game, neither of those things have happened.

If the Sabres continue to play at their current level, and perhaps elevate a bit when all of the injured players return, they should be right in contention for 3rd in the division, or a wild card spot, right up to the end of the season.  While I'd love for them to be one of the teams that eventually separates from the pack (in a positive way), I'm not sure they're going to be able to do that.  What I believe will be different is that in previous seasons when they've been close and fallen short, they've gotten hot and made a run at the end of the season.  This season, I believe they'll be in the mix all season long.  If it happens that way and they fall short, it will be a disappointment, but at least we'll have seen an entertaining several months of hockey, rather then sleepwalking through October - February and making a little run in March when it's too late, the fans have already tuned them out, and the building is empty.

Winning even just a quarter of your overtime games is significant. That would be taking 1.25 points per game, a 102 point pace. If you win more of those remaining regulation games than you lose, you’re in the playoffs. Keeping games out of the middle column will take you places.

Heck, winning 20% of them gives you the NHL 0.600 pace you need to essentially guarantee a playoff spot.  So, yeah, getting to OT helps.

Well according to google we also tied the league record... it did not mention that we were already tied for the league record... So good to know.

There was a statistic given in The Athletic this morning that 28% of the games played so far this season have gone to overtime. That was a surprisingly high figure to me. Also helps explain the bunched up standings.
