But then why bring up Metsa? Just send down Johnson. Geertsen can play defense in practice. You're home and then at Montreal, which is nearly as quick to drive from Rochester as to fly. You can get Metsa or Novikov in a heartbeat.

So instead, the logical thing is to take Metsa away from the Amerks (when they already have Dunne up) -- and the possibility that neither plays if Greenway is a go.

When I wrote the post Samuelsson was listed day to day, Kesselring is out week to week.  That leaves the 6 healthy D as Dahlin, Byram, Power, Timmins, Bryson and Metsa.

Metsa is in such lofty company as Brett Murray and Lucas Rousek...

 

Maybe he'll be something. I'd have 0.0% issue if they didn't already have another mighty mite playing defense in the NHL.  Did you watch Bryson get pitchforked into his own net on a routine net crash by Ottawa last game?  Unless Zach Metsa is the second coming of Torey Krug I don't see the intrigue.  The Sabres need defenseman with snarl, not platform shoes.

Agreed.  I like RyJo but it doesn't seem like he's ever going to get a chance here so i'm not sure we need to give him a nickname.

The problem being Both of them may be in the lineup. The Sabres already get laughed at by their peers on the ice to their face. What level of hilarity will the opponents engage in when the Oompa Loompa squad is out there trying to keep 6'5" 240 lbs monsters out of the crease.  They will get eaten for dinner.

I think I saw somewhere that Giroux was chirping at Power something along the lines of “you’re a wet dog in a tall body” or something like that.  Even our big guys get chirped.

Was Giroux still chirping at the end of the game when he looked up at the score board? I thought Power played well in this game. It wasn't a dominant performance but simply did his job. I'll take that level of play.

He actually showed some attitude against Ottawa, now he needs to keep it up.   Your bar is too low. 

He was a first overall draft pick.  Just once in a while can we see a dominant performance from him?

It isn't an issue of setting the bar too low for him. What I recognize is that his style of play doesn't rely so much on physicality as it does positioning and skating. And because of that more finesse style his play will not be as preferred by many as the more muscular style of play would be. He's a tall and lean young player who will get stronger. What I'm watching to see is steady increase in his physicality. As you noted, it was evident in the Ottawa game. But the reality that many people are reluctant to accept is that he is not going to be an imposing physical player on the ice because that is not his game. In my more optimistic eyes I see a player who is going to be an anchor defenseman for us. But for many people his contribution will be dismissed because of how he plays.

This applies to what? 3 or 4 forwards in the league? Maybe.

Ok. The NHL average 6'1" 200 lbs. forward is still going to have their way with Peter Dinklage and Brad Johnson...er...Jacob Bryson and Zach Metsa.  All I'm asking is for this team to behave in such a manner that doesn't seem counter intuitive with how the rest of the league works. This team can't afford to be the frontrunners on height challenged NHL defenseman.

Novikov, Komarov, Mrtka...all NHL sized defenseman performing better than Metsa currently, but Zach has intangibles and vaunted leadership from his college exploits.
