Stop apologizing for this clown show.

Have you read my posts on the owner and GM? You have become a hysterical zealot on the Sabres. Everything this GM has done this offseason has not been wrong or at least defensible. If one can't be fair in making a judgment on individual transactions, then what's the point of even commenting because the automatic response is going to be critical even if the transaction makes sense.

If you allow me, I would like to offer a suggestion that will help you cope a little better. Try taking an ice bath and cool off the raging furies that you have built up. But don't overdo it because your lower aperture might freeze up causing a clog. That's not a good thing if you eat a lot of processed foods. 😃

You're an apologist for a franchise of failure. Are you maybe too young to know what a real team should function like?

I'm not "hysterical" I'm just no longer "Hoping" or giving them the benefit of a doubt. I'm just f'n fed up.

I’m older than you are Mr. Youngster. You have become a frantic fan who buys a ticket just to boo. Freaking calm down and cool off. You are loosing your marbles over a bloody game. You need to tune out for a tad to get your stressed out batteries recharged.

My issue with the Sabres wanting to be grittier and tougher to play against is they still have too many players that are extraordinarily easy to play against.  Power, Samuelsson, Quinn to name a few.

Two things can be simultaneously correct: that they still have those guys on the roster AND they have fewer easier to play against types this year versus last.

It has to be Ruff pushing this move toward shaping a roster this way.  His predecessor and Adams back then certainly weren't.

My hope is that adding players like Kesselring, Danforth, and Doan (if he gets to the big club) provide the on-ice example to play this way and not the apathetic style we've seen.

It ain't the top-6 forward or major shake-up I'd hoped for, but at this point it's the path they've chosen.

Except they are immediately deviating from the path. If you want to be harder to play against, bringing in 4 bottom of the roster players ain’t gonna cut it. They need guys that are going to log serious minutes to be the worst humans you’ve ever met.  Booger Sugar Quinn and my dad was also a large soft player Samuelsson are the problem.  Get these passengers off the team.

I don’t walk away from the wounded. He’s in a self-induced state of manic-depression. I’m trying to uplift him. He’s resisting. I will not walk away from this challenge until I consider him to be a complete lost cause. He’s not there yet but he’s getting close to that line.

Also, it doesn't have to be binary, or maybe it does but in a different way.

Sure, it would be great to have a hard nosed, hard-to-play against guy who is also skilled and can play with finesse, but not everyone is built that way. It doesn't have to be a problem through.

For example, maybe you put a guy like Power on the ice with the other 'type' of guys, enough of them, so he doesn't have to play that 'tougher' game....and it allows his skills to flourish.  Despite his size, it may not always be a bad thing if a guy is super-skilled and you put enough of the other type of guys in the team so he doesn't even have to put a thought to that type of game, and it allows him to just do what he does best.   Hasn't Lindy said over and over and over you need some tough guys, some 'enforcers' maybe, to give the other guys more room to play their game?

Guys, you know Josh Doan spent the final 4 months of the season as an NHL regular right?

You know he’s 23, a 2nd rounder and was over a point a game in minors right? All while being a physical guy who plays “the right way” on both sides of the puck?

You know that 5 from this group are making the Sabres?

  • Doan 51 NHL games, 19 points
  • Kulich 62 games 24 points
  • Danforth 61 games 21 points
  • Malenstyn 76 games 10 points
  • Kozak 21 games 5 points
  • Rosen 8 games 1 point
  • Östlund 8 games 0 points

They got him to make the NHL roster harder to play against.

Most of you have Jiri Kulich in the top 6. Unless they add at least 2 more veterans and at least one of them is a banger, I’m not sure why you’d think Doan making the team is in doubt.

How are you getting to 5 of them?

(And NOT saying this is how the roster plays out, just putting guys we know are making the roster in a matrix)

Benson - Norris - Thompson

Quinn - Kulich - Tuch

Zucker - McLeod - Greenway

???? - Krebs - ????

Spare.

So, having included Kulich above, that's one.  There are 3 other roster spaces left.  Fully expect Doan to take one of those other 3.  But from your list, only see 4 guys on the final roster.  (Personally expect them to run 8D, but maybe not and that would be your 5th.  But again, expect 8D.)

And would expect that Malenstyn is that last one, though could see either Danforth or (less likely) Kozak beating him out.

So, this looks to be about it, the roster we are going in to the season with. At least, as of now.

6 years in and it doesn’t look promising. We shall see. Hope to be pleasantly surprised.

Probably a 1 in 4 chance of Byram still going bye-bye.  Would give a lesser chance that another Zucker or Greenway gets signed on the cheap because it seems Adams finds one or 2 more guys after the initial FA rush; but they already have a bit of a glut of 3rd and 4th liners.  Need another top 6 guy for when Quinn doesn't go back to what he was becoming 2 years ago &/or when Norris breaks again.  (Or for when Tuch or Thompson miss their 5-10 games with injuries.)

I throw up in my mouth a little bit every time I see Quinn in the top 6.  Its such a roll of the dice.

I think the difference between us was I had 14 forwards:

Benson, Quinn, Krebs, Norris, Tuch, Thompson, McLeod, Greenway, Zucker as more or less secure.

Five more openings.

But you’re right, they might keep 13 forwards.

The job does still seem to be incomplete.  Wish I had faith that it would be completed and completed well enough to make them relevant again.  Have hope.  But no faith.

The forwards as they stand right now are so up in the air.

  • Norris is one of the top 6 centres, who is the other: Kulich, McLeod or Thompson?
  • Do they put Tuch and Thompson together on a real 1st line or split them up for balance?
  • Which offensive options get to play with the big boys: Kulich, Benson, Quinn or Zucker?
  • Where does the odd man out from the above group fit? Is he sitting?
  • Are Krebs, Danforth, Doan and Greenway energy line role players, or will Lindy sprinkle some in with the skill guys?
  • Is Malenstyn the spare forward, as of now? Does Kozak make the team?
  • Does Geertsen make the squad as a token deterrent a la Andrew Peters?
  • 2 scoring lines, 1 checking line, 1 energy line?
  • 2 2-way lines, 1 sheltered offensive line, 1 energy line?
  • 3 balanced lines and 3 role players?

There’s so little established in terms of patterns. Peterka’s out, Norris and Greenway didn’t really play down the stretch, Danforth and Doan are new.

You know Lindy’s going to lean on Tage and Tuch, and Norris will probably be the same. I expect McLeod to get a ton of ice time, but I’m not sure how or with who.

After that there is a lot of space for people to carve out some territory. And I am including unexpected people like Greenway, Krebs and Danforth in that equation.

I have no real sense of how this is going to settle, but maybe it will coalesce around a new addition.

Geertsen isn’t making any NHL team and whoever scouted him needs to be fired! Have seen him play a lot on the Silver Knights and he’s nothing more than a minor leaguer. He’s not that good of a player but he will drop the gloves!

That meme brings to mind a story I read that the Flyers were off season training with some UFC guy so wtf is that about? Maybe they really are planning on being the Broad Street Bullies again.

I like Kesselring. I don't know anything about Doan other than his lineage which might give false hope that he's like dad but the idea that the Sabres are substantially harder to play against now is kind of far fetched. We moved up a little maybe from softest team in the league but we're still on the mid to low side league wide in terms of team toughness.

Can’t argue, haven’t seen him play.

But he played 25 NHL games for a coach named Lindy Ruff, who used to use Andrew Peters 5 minutes a night, 50-odd games a year. He now coaches a team that has a reputation for not being able to handle the rough stuff, has no one like that in their system, and just signed Geertsen to a contract.

I have a feeling we’re going to see this guy this year.

They didn’t sign him to be anything more than a minor league plug.
