Rochester Americans 2021-2022

I was at the Amerks last OT playoff win in 2004. Game 7 in Syracuse. The Sabres management was in the section behind us. Crunch came down on Miller and hit the post. Amerks went the other way and scored. Best hockey atmosphere I’ve ever been at. Sellout game with over 2000 Amerks fans in Syracuse.

I was also there. Syracuse wasn’t ready for a sellout and fans were lined up outside trying to get in after the puck dropped.

Don Stevens was passed up for the Sabres job when Dunleavy was hired, and he’s not a young man, so I don’t see it.

He also has been slipping a bit on names & the like.

Agree.  Can't see him getting the promotion.

Further proof that this team's culture has really changed.

Do you see the theme I’m getting at here? These youngsters thrived in their first taste of the Calder Cup Playoffs. Another point about culture is how close these guys are. The season is over in Buffalo. Players could be anywhere, but I saw Dylan Cozens, Jacob Bryson and Malcolm Subban there to cheer on their teammates.

Seeing their smiles outside the locker-room after the game showed how much they care for the guys that were playing. These are the types of things we’ve been seeing all season that can’t be faked.

Has Laaksonen been a healthy scratch?

They dressed 7 D tonight and none of them were him, and that’s not including Mule and Davidson, who might be back for Utica.

Having Eliot, Teves and Tischke ahead of him would be troubling.

Yeah, I enjoy his call.

I used to listen to him back in the eighties when the Amerks were an AHL powerhouse (yah, he's been there that long!) and never thought he was much more than mediocre.

Especially after listening to RJ.

Yes, healthy scratch. I think the reality with Laaksonen is that he’s essentially a PP specialist who can’t play any defense. He’s very soft in his own end. Belleville was a big and physical team. Utica isn’t much different, so I don’t think we’ll see him, especially if Samuelsson and/or Davidson return against Utica.

Has he been working on it, or is he just not suited for the playoffs?

He hasn’t played since driving a forward into UPL and taking him out.

Let’s be honest, he probably did the team a favor. I understand people want to see UPL play for development purposes, but Dell is better at this level. I’m not sure the Amerks win both of those games with UPL.

Dell’s style is so bad. He’s constantly overplaying things and losing his angles and even his net entirely. Games where he gets lit up are inevitable.

But you may be right.

Aggression is less of a liability behind teams that lose coverage constantly like the Amerks, and teams like Belleville lack the skill to exploit him, so when he guesses right he can look spectacular.

In terms of what makes an NHL goalie, UPL is far superior IMO. And I think he’s better built to take a structured team for a long playoff run.

Yes, UPL has the NHL style butterfly down pretty well. But he just misses pucks and struggles with weak goals. Sure, if he gets hot, his potential is far greater than Dell.  But so far in the AHL that’s rarely happened for more than the odd game here or there.
