the write-up at diebytheblade provided some context on his linemates, and how his performance improved away from certain players (who are dumpster fires defensively).

And this roster is a better fit?

Is this showing he’s a disaster defensively??

Yep, a tad bit

Not quite a clone, but effectively as ineffective defensively.

Choosing NYR over the Sabres means he hadn't grown up?

I pick living in NYC over Buffalo, and my wife tells me I need to grow up...

He's a UFA after this year too, does anyone think he actually stays?

Hopefully we can get a 3rd round pick back for him at the trade deadline.

Poorly worded - I meant more the appeal of a big city to go partying in may have been more attractive 3 years ago and he is less bothered by that now. Just speculating as to reasonable things that could mean his reasons for rejecting us the first time around aren't true now

Spending a pick on a replacement player for 1 year seems stupid

At best, a 3rd round pick in 2021 will be an NHL player of Vesey's caliber in....2025/6. I just can't imagine caring at all.

I think your implication was obvious, and someone was just picking a fight 😉

Right. It's not like this is a bad trade. It's just not an interesting one either.

Are you and at least one other trying too hard? On the face of it, the Rangers gave him up for a bag of pucks. The whole offseason so far has been a trip down to the Dollar Store with gramma.

McCabe was the original rumored piece going to NY. I’ll take this deal anyway over that

The pick's ceiling would probably be Vesey, and could realistically not make the NHL

Yeah.  At least Botterill had a good reason to take a chance on Sheary.

At best is definitely not true; it's likely but not definite. And it's another asset we could have used elsewhere

Get out of here with that nonsense.

It's an underwhelming addition, by any measure.

I was simply pointing out that there's analysis to suggest that he can be adequate defensively if paired with a more responsible line mate. Damning with faint praise, if anything.

This was a waste of a third, no matter how bad a third projects to be.

Well, like I saw posted somewhere (here or Twitter).  He's going into UFA the following season.  If he commands more as a trade during the season and the Sabres flip him for better assets, then does it matter?

The game isn't over today.

Actually, the likely outcome is that pick doesn't have a meaningful NHL career.

Yes. Among other items from the blog cited upthread:

When he played away from Howden, his xGA/60 at 5 on 5 went from a 3.03 to a 2.48 and his xGF% per 60 increased from 41.61% to a 51.26% according to Natural Stat Trick.

Right and I know that, but that doesn't mean their useless picks to have

He's just saying it's not certain the 3rd will end up with an inferior career. Even though that's the most likely case.
