Current Carrion Hockey League Standings

This team is spectacularly bad. So bad, you almost get the impression that we are witnessing something spectacular in human history.

Let's look at some NHL records for ineptitude, shall we?

Fewest Points by a team in one season: 21, by the 1974–75 Washington Capitals expansion team (80gp, 8-67-5). However, since the NHL started awarding points for overtime losses beginning in 1999-2000, by far the worst a team has ever finished is the expansion Atlanta Thrashers in the first season with three-point games, when they managed only 39 points. That team was outscored 313-170 on the season. Buffalo is on pace to match the Thrashers with 39 points, being outscored by a combined 290-101 which is a worse goal differential (-189) than the Thrashers (-143).

Fewest Goals scored by a team in one season: 133, by the 1953–54 Chicago Blackhawks (70 games) ...our beloved Sabres on pace to shatter this record with a paltry 101 goals.

Most Goals allowed by a team in one season: 446, by the 1974–75 Washington Capitals ....on pace to give up 290, nowhere near historically bad, but still terrible.

Worst +/- by any player in any one season: Bill Mikkelson, -82 (1974–75) ...Ristolainen is a -13 through 17 games, on pace to finish -62.

Worst Power Play Percentage in a Season: 9.35%, by the 1997–98 Tampa Bay Lightning ...Sabres PP% currently humming along at 5.7% (3 goals on 53 attempts). Amazingly the Wild are worse at 4.6% (2 goals on 44 attempts).

Most Shutout Losses in a Season: 16 of 82 games played (19.5%), by the 2006–07 Columbus Blue Jackets ...Buffalo has been shutout 5 times in 17 games, on pace to be shutout an astounding 24 times.

So, yeah, bottom line is that this team is historically bad offensively. If the goaltending starts to falter, then they could spiral downward even further reaching unimaginable depths.

I believe that projected 101 goals should be given an asterisk to account for the "goal" that is awarded for shootout wins. We already have two of those, yeah?

This season will be different as the CHL will likely heat up towards the end. 60 points is normally 99% to finish last; I'd bet there will be at least 2-3 teams in the 50s this year.

You are 100% correct here. Competition in the CHL towards the end of the season is going to be downright brutal, moreso than that other league. Make no mistake, the Sabres need to be bringing their "A" game nightly, especially early on. This is why I'm hoping they make some trades sooner than later. Nolan needs to be given the tools to succeed.

That's what I think this team is really bad. I'm just hoping these other bottom teams start making some serious space between us. I'm shocked how Columbus is playing but don't they have some key players injured right now.

sounds like a CHL powerhouse to me.

Has anyone checked to see which (if any) teams/fanbases have already embraced the tank as enthusiastically as we have? With our extra picks and preseason favorite status, we might be ahead of the curve. Others will be added as teams are eliminated from playoff contention, but hopefully it will be too little too late. Or is it not little enough?

I would assume not. Most of the other teams in the top of the CHL with us don't want to be there/didn't expect to be there; certainly not Colorado and CBJ. Edmonton has had enough of it, and Florida and Carolina don't have fans.

Current standings through games played 11/13.

Team ----- GP - L - W - OT - PTS

Buffalo 18 13 3 2 28

Colorado 18 8 5 5 21

Columbus 15 10 4 1 21

Edmonton 17 9 6 2 20

Arizona 16 9 6 1 19

Carolina 15 7 5 3 17

Calgary 18 6 10 2 14

Winnipeg 17 6 9 2 14

Florida 13 4 5 4 12

NY I 15 5 10 0 10

Sabres appearing to create space but Columbus has 3 games in hand. They aren't giving up yet and Horton's imminent retirement will help the cause.

Only 4 teams in action tonight; BJ's, Desert Dogs, and a 2 bag matchup between CHL bottom feeders - Garth's Goobers visit the Swamp Cats. After GG's have endured 4 pointless games (but, hey, when you think about it, really aren't all their games pointless?) they are looking for a statement game to show they still belong as charter CHL members. Tank on Wang, tank on Garth.

Dubsinky should be back soon, so hopefully that will help get Columbus going. We're creating separation, which is good - because once teams start dealing for the tank, it'll get much more interesting.

...and Buffalo won't be dealing for the tank? Stafford, Stewart, Mezaros are all as good as gone (moving Mezaros would actually be an upgrade tho). It's also likely one of Myers, Ennis, Neuvirth or Enroth get moved as well.... maybe even Moulson again if the price is right. By then Buffalo will be so far ahead of everybody it may actually deter other teams from tanking.
