PromoTheRobot Posted October 1 Report Posted October 1 (edited) Everytime I listen to WGR when Paul Hamilton is on, he mispronounces Helenius. And not just saying it wrong the same way. He says it wrong a different way every time. HELL-nus, hell-NEE-iss, etc. It's embarrassing a Sabres beat reporter can't learn a name after 2 years. And no one else at WGR corrects him. msw2112 Posted October 1 Report Posted October 1 How it is supposed to be pronounced: "Hell-en-eee-us?" Not as easy as the monosyllabic "Krebs" but doesn't seem THAT difficult to pronounce. Quote

Correct, but the accent is on the 2nd syllable. hell-EN-ee-us. Quote

Forecheck Posted October 2 Report Posted October 2 In fairness to Hamilton his mouth was probably half full with his breakfast. Kidding. Not really. 2 Quote
JustOutsideChicago Posted October 2 Report Posted October 2 (edited) I feel like when he’s on in the morning they can get passive aggressive with him (rightfully so) and it goes over his head every time. It’s wild that he continues to be their primary Sabres guy. Edited October 2 by JustOutsideChicago Quote

Porous Five Hole Posted October 2 Report Posted October 2 Paul “watch your language” Hamilton has never broken a story in his life. He’s well liked by his coworkers, but ill equipped to be a source for breaking news and does not have a voice for radio. He’s a shining example of being first rather than best, and accepted just as that. Nice guy, bad at his job, warm body at the harbor center just in case a live mic is needed. I’m not on twitter, but he would block me if I were. WGR at its finest. Quote

More of a I don’t really bring anything new or insightful to the table I’m just going to complain a lot and sound like Andy Rooney kinda guy. Quote

You've never butchered someones name before and just laughed about it? This seems more like the torch and pitchfork people who don't like Paul Hamilton. Quote

This seems more like the torch and pitchfork people who don't like Paul Hamilton. I'm only going on what's been said on this board - I don't listen to Hamilton and as such, I don't really have an opinion on him one way or another and I have not personally heard him mispronounce the player's name. My take is that if he mispronounced the name once or twice, that's fine, but he apparently does it repeatedly, which is very poor form for a member of the media. It irritates me when media members don't do their homework and mispronounce names and/or overlook or misstate important facts. Most of us have to be prepared to succeed at our jobs and we would like to see our media members prepare for theirs. Having a good handle on the people or events that they cover is part of a media person's job. But enough lecturing on a media member I don't follow. I'm much more concerned about the Sabres' defense and goaltending injuries.... 1 Quote
Weave Posted October 3 Report Posted October 3 (edited) I’m curious how many trashing Hamilton for a likely honest error in pronunciation found Don Cherry’s act of doing it purposefully, and out of disrespect humorous? Edited October 3 by Weave Quote
