SwampD Posted August 13 Report Posted August 13 I find it weird that the team hires the tv crew. I wonder if that happens in any other market. I really don’t know. Quote

Good question. Pretty sure that tradition goes back to Ted Darling having the opportunity to either be a Channel 7 (IIRC) or a Sabre employee when they got the broadcast contract. He decided to stay with the Sabres so that should Channel 2 get the contract back (or it go to 4 or even 29) he'd still be the voice of the Sabres rather than switching to local sports or Dave Thomas' replacement. By making them employees they can control the messaging so the organization and players don’t get criticized. It’s fortunate that there are still some local reporters like Hamilton and Harrington who are willing to give objective analysis. Quote
shrader Posted August 13 Report Posted August 13 I feel like every team is going to hire the broadcast crew across all three leagues. Maybe not in the biggest of markets, but these broadcast exist specifically for the teams. 1 Quote

Doohickie Posted August 14 Report Posted August 14 It's generally the case that the broadcasters are employees of the team. That's not just the NHL, it's most of the team sports in North America. I think the NFL is the exception for television broadcasts but they still employ the radio broadcast employees. 1 Quote

bob_sauve28 Posted August 14 Report Posted August 14 I'm just going to go out on a limb here and say no one will really notice any meaningful changes to the broadcast. Ray will just be Ray, Dunleavy will still be himself and same old same old. Quote

Dunleavy is terrible...Bills/Sabres have to have the worst PBP tandem in pro sports. Sad when we used to have one of the best tandems in Ted Darling/RJ and Van Miller for such a long time. Literally went from 3 Hall Of Famers to trash overnight almost. Edited August 14 by Big Guava 1 1 Quote

Interesting view from the outside, The Hockey Guy on YouTube is of the opinion that Rob Ray is the best color guy in the NHL. 1 Quote

If he is the best, I would hate to see the worst! I hear Ray's voice and I hit the mute. Quote

I would say Detroit's Mickey Redmond was one of the best but as he's gotten older he's lost a step and his knowledge of the game is more and more dated. The other one I like quite a bit is Daryl Reaugh for the Stars. Quote

I like Ray for his humor on ice (in the box) but i prefer Marty for his technical insights to the game. I would like to hear more of Marty in near real time instead of waiting until in between periods. If they used both that would mean less Dan, which is actually good, and maybe Dan could focus on keeping up with the play by play. Sometimes Dan is completely lost and talking about other things. He rarely verbally keeps track of puck possession and where the puck is on the ice. If he improved his play by play it would also greatly improve the radio coverage. He is terrible on the radio and needs the TV visual to cover his sloppy play by play. Quote

Little chance of that. His rooting priorities are Vancouver, Boston and Dallas, so I don't think he'd confuse Daryl Reaugh with Rob Ray. 1 Quote

Ray is not good, and on top of that, having your primary analyst at ice level is ridiculous considering the sight lines. Quote

I was wondering if he was still around. It’s probably been 15 or so years since I was stuck with the other team’s feed on center ice and I always thought of him as one of the best. 1 Quote
