This seems like the beginning of the end of Sams time in Buffalo.  Two sides in obvious disagreement regarding value agreeing to short contracts until it is time to move on.

I disagree. He got bridged because Botts wanted it and Reinhart bet on himself. Sam got unlucky that his contract is up now. So he takes a nice raise that's slightly team friendly for 1 year while teams adjust. Teams protected because he's still an RFA and Sam can bet on there being more money next year.

If he wanted to, he could have tried for a 2 year deal and held out for arbitration.

Yeah, it will be interesting to hear why they settled on a 1 year deal.  It's a great deal for Buffalo and for Sam.  Gives the Sabres options going into contract negotiations after the season with Hall, Dahlin, Joker, Sam.

So much cap space after next season and it should be easy to protect the players we want to protect for the expansion draft.

This is a good deal for Sam because it buys him more time for the virus hockey economy to works its way through this revenue depression cycle. And If Sam is included with Hall on the Jack line it will allow him to burnish his stats making a more compelling case for a bigger and longer term contract in a (hopefully) healthier economic environment.

It seems that every thing that this new front office is doing makes sense. There is a coherency and soundness to how they are handling personnel and in their handling of contracts. With the exception of the stunningly surprising Hall signing there is a sound and systematic way they are going about their business. This regime understands this altered market and knows how to maneuver within it.

As others have said this is a good deal for Sam and for the organization. I'm upbeat about the operation.

I have a different interpretation of the signing. A short term contract was agreed to by both parties because it was in their respective interests. If Sam wanted to move on he would have gone to arbitration. This agreement indicates both sides are buying time for the market to adjust to a more favorable setting.

This seems like a COVID-friendly contract, much like Hall's.  Finances suck right now.  Nobody knows when that will change.  Postpone longterm contract talks for a year, hoping there will be better information.

As for listing Sam as a center, that's a smart move for trade value down the road.  "Despite playing on the wing in Buffalo, he's a natural center.  We'll move him over to fill our desperate need for centers."  😁

I generally agree with the exception of the Zemgus contract, which continues to be nuts.

Separately, I agree that this is a good deal for the Sabres.  Not that good for Reino, although not really bad either, and I can understand why Sam would prefer to avoid the arbitration process.  I think the door is very much open for a long-term contract next summer, but there are a lot of different scenarios in which that would not happen.  This certainly gives the Sabres flexibility to choose a Hall extension over a Reino extension.

Do we not have to protect Sam now for expansion since he won't be under contract or does it not matter and Seattle can still claim him anyway?

They still have to protect him.  He's an RFA next year, not a UFA.
