2019 First Round Picks

54 members have voted

  1. 1. What would you do with the 3 first round picks we have in 2019? (assume none of them slide)

    • Trade the 2 extra and just use the highest 1st round pick at the draft
      12
    • Trade 1 of the picks in a package for an NHL player/Prospect
      11
    • Package all 3 picks to get a player from a team needing to make moves
      1
    • Keep all 3 picks and make them at the draft
      30

We have 3 first round picks in 2019. I would guess they are in the 6-10 range, 17-20 range, and 23-28 range. Now we have had this before. In 2015 we had it. Now let's say we have pick 7, 19, and 27 in this upcoming draft (For argument sake).  If I am Bots, I use all 3 picks. I figure that pick 7 will be ready in 2 years and 19 and 27 will be ready in 4 years. That sucks but at the same time this team is so devoid of depth talent and these 3 picks would be our best shot at adding good young talent to the pool (Botterill's drafting aside). Mathematically, 2 of 3 should be NHL regulars and we could get lucky and hit on all 3, that's a full line of players who would be NHL ready right when we need them most on cheap entry level deals.

The other option would be to move the picks. You could do it at the draft or prior for NHL talent. I don't think a late first gets you a great player, the pick would be more valuable in my mind but it is the other option. You can package the pick with something but we don't have a lot of expendable talent left.

So do you keep or trade those first round picks?

I think you need to trade one of the later picks for a prospect that is further along the development curve. That spreads out the projected impact a little better - you get the traded prospect this year or at worst next year, the top 10 pick hits the NHL in 2 years, and the later pick in 3-4 years.

I know it's greedy, but I want to see some new players pushing out the trash on the NHL roster sooner rather than later.

Mittelstadt was drafted 8th and played in the NHL the season following his draft and will be a fulltime NHLer this season

Thompson was drafted 26th in 2016 and made the NHL in the 2nd year follwing his draft.

I think I’d shorten the time table for the 1st rd picks.  1-3 years

I’d be open to moving any all of them for a player that fits with our core.

For the right player, I would be, too, but I ended up voting to trade two and keep one because I don't know that the hypothetical right player--who is worth three first round picks--is available.

I think he uses them.  This is not a XGMTM rush rebuild, this is a steady-as-she-goes groundswell.  Having three 1st rounders in the prospect pool next year will increase the odds that one or even two will hit, providing key pieces for the future at affordable prices.  JBot's philosophy is not to put all the eggs in one basket but to play the odds.  The more highly rated prospects he has in the system, the better the pickings from the prospect pool.

Honestly if they draft all 3 and 2 of them don't hit we should fire the scouting department. I don't even mean be superstars, i just mean effective NHL players.

I meant hitting quickly.  The first could be in the NHL early in the season, if the Sabres are fortunate, one of the other firsts will make it to the NHL during the first season too, or possibly the second.

First season post draft? So in 2019 or 2020?

Im ok with trade one or two of the later rounders for a package deal for young prospects.. but if not draft all three.  Still not sure what next year’s draft talent looks like so there is that.  If it is a deep draft JBots may have some options which is a good thing imo.

2019

Highly unlikely unless we win a lottery pick. It is not impossible that 2 picks make the team in 2020. Keep in mind how long a player like Barzal took. We could get a McAvoy but that's more about being physically ready.

Keep the picks and draft 3 players. Unless you can trade the picks for player/players that excite me. Trade a pick or 2 if it can rid us of Okposo and his contract.

Really, I can go a lot of different ways on this. I'm pretty fluid when it comes to the Sabres these days.

Depends on how deep the draft is.     If they think they can get quality at those spots, then keep the picks.    If they think there's a large drop off before they'll pick, then use them as part of a trade.... perhaps a package to fill a need.

Similar to Pi's sentiment, too early to say what the best course of action will be next year.  Most likely it'll be keeping the top pick & trading 1 of the other 2.  But, that decision is best left to next year's draft unless there is simply a trade they can't pass up @ the next deadline & that 2nd or 3rd pick is required to consumate the deal.

I voted keep all three. I’m open to anything, but the hope is we’re about to have a surge of expensive deals. Eichel’s already on one, Mittelstadt hopefully earns one in two years and Dahlin hopefully does in three. Reinhart right now.

The best and most sustainable franchises are able to supplement their expensive talent with quality young prospects. Three first round picks is a ton to restock the cupboard, so to speak. And we don’t really have much in the pipeline right now.

This is a fair point, too.
