2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs: Round 2

I still don't think Niskanen should be suspended more, he just quickly puts up his arm to defend himself from crosby plowing into him.

I do tend to agree. As it's often said: That was a bang-bang play. There didn't look to be any intent to injure, or some sort of premeditation.

The play certainly looked mostly accidental. But Niskanen didn't look like he was particularly worried about not popping Crosby on his way down. Accidental, with a dash of opportunistic.

One important question to ask is that if Crosby was Niskanen in that play, does he get a game misconduct? I theorize that he wouldn't. I hope he's okay, but I've seen Crosby do worse.

I don't have a problem with professional sports leagues protecting their stars, and giving them (somewhat) heightened levels of protection.

Its willful ignorance of head injury issues aside, the NFL knew well enough to do that with its QBs.

I think the misconduct is fair in that it gets Niskanen off the ice and clear of attempted Bertuzzi-style jumping. Someone could challenge Niskanen to fight, but it's possible there's something much more malicious. Refs can use their discretion in this.

Now, their discretion was (I believe) because it was Crosby and not... say... Rust. If it's Rust getting hit, no misconduct, and probably little retribution from the Penguins anyway because the player was falling to the ice and doesn't have a history of concussions and isn't their star. Maybe a quick fight. Definitely a couple slashes later on.

This is a good take. Getting Niskanen off the ice defuses the situation.

That's an interesting angle.
