I do tend to agree. As it's often said: That was a bang-bang play. There didn't look to be any intent to injure, or some sort of premeditation. There didn't look to be any intent to injure, or some sort of premeditation. The play certainly looked mostly accidental. But Niskanen didn't look like he was particularly worried about not popping Crosby on his way down. Accidental, with a dash of opportunistic. I theorize that he wouldn't. I hope he's okay, but I've seen Crosby do worse. I don't have a problem with professional sports leagues protecting their stars, and giving them (somewhat) heightened levels of protection. Someone could challenge Niskanen to fight, but it's possible there's something much more malicious. Refs can use their discretion in this. Now, their discretion was (I believe) because it was Crosby and not... say... Rust. If it's Rust getting hit, no misconduct, and probably little retribution from the Penguins anyway because the player was falling to the ice and doesn't have a history of concussions and isn't their star.
