The Jack Eichel thread.

I hope this is right.  I've been fooled once by the Gary Roberts name drop in the past.

I was right there with you.

All of these guys train with someone or other. There's no reason to believe (or fear) that Hodgson's Gary Roberts training story is predictive of anything concerning Eichel.

As for Hodgson, I would like to think he can be a good player in the league -- that he just got miscast in Buffalo like a mofo. OTOH, and I know I've posted it before, there's something about him (I'm gonna say it: a softness) and his back story (mostly the helicopter hockey dad) that makes me think that he may not get it together.

I'm more optimistic on CoHo.  The softness doesn't seem as bad was it was early, but because everyone is looking for it now it's easy to point out.  Everyone loses puck battles and gets pushed off the puck.  Everyone is strong on the puck at times too.  We're so used to the soft CoHo that every time we see it, our bias is confirmed.  But I think he got better late in the season.

As for the dad situation, a kid's gotta grow up at some point.  I like to think he's at that point.

I also always sensed last season that if any single player was tanking, it was CoHo, whether it was because he was trying to help the cause or was just trying to get moved off the team, or maybe he was just discouraged in general, I think he was often playing below his capability semi-purposely.  So *if* the new & improved Sabres are something he wants to be a part of, he could easily have a rebound year this coming season.

All that said, I could be wrong.

Thanks. I'm going to admit: My take on him being "soft" isn't even based on his play. I dunno. I think I might be way of the rez with that one -- he looks to be a solid dude in this Hot Minute.

I think he mentally checked out this past season, my version of "soft" is he just wasn't having fun. He was playing in a system and for a coach that was taking a toll on him, while others thrived ( Ennis) . He looked left behind. I'm not 100% sure he will be here in October, but I feel confident he will be the CoHo that almost meets expectations we thought of coming here. If the thought was him scoring 20 goals and he gets 15-ish I'm ok with that. Between his back problems, coaches, the trading of assets the last 2 years, it's so hard come up with a 100% convincing conclusion on him for me. Do we keep or trade? Sure!

That reminded me of the scene in Awakenings where the patients threw the rubber ball back and forth to each other........

That COHO interview with the kid is great!

I'm not a COHO fan but his stock just went up a bit in my mind.

Regarding the piece over at WGR-550.com...

I just posted in the World Championship thread about this, but watch in all those video snippets how Eichel uses his body.

He totally understands how to use his body to control territory, shield the puck, and neutralize an opponent, as though he has been playing in the NHL for 10 years.  He also already has the body size/strength to pull it off.

McDavid (at the moment) is like a child in comparison.

If Hodgson is on this team before next season starts I highly doubts he plays as bad as he did this year. He said it was his worst year in his life since he started playing. I think with the right coach and line mates he regains his offensive touch. If not he will be casted off. I still think Murray is going to move some players and or picks at the draft for a proven young player.

How much would it suck if Edmonton took Eichel 1st overall after we've all started to gravitate towards him?

I could finally watch all the Conner McDavid stuff I've been ignoring because I figured we'd never get him, haha.

Yeah, wouldn't really bother me.

And they would never do it. If McDavid is valued more highly than Eichel the Eulers wouldn't just take Eichel; they'd approach GMTM about a possible trade where the Sabres would kick in something extra for the privilege of getting the top rated pick.

Also, I think McKenzie said in one of his columns that if the Eulers didn't pick McJesus, the Edmonton fans would revolt. It just wouldn't be a good PR move.

The only way the Sabres end up with someone other than Eichel is if he suffers a career-ending injury at IIHF or Murray decides to trade him, and I can't see Murray having the cojones to do that.

So I've finished my end of work for the day and still waiting on a co-worker to finish theirs so we can submit a report.  Had some free time and took a trip down memory lane in the Carrion thread.

Holy .  Don't do it.  I've spent the last 45 minutes re-living the mid Nov to mid Dec streak and how we reacted.  It's like re-living a real life horror.  I've skipped many pages and still am just at New Years.  I haven't even hit the Second Chapter where we live and breathe Coyotes hockey.  Must say, some never waivered, even in the darkest moments a couple of weeks before Christmas.  Good on you guys.  I am so please just to never have to live through another tank again.  Holy Jack Eichel better be amazing!!!!!

I was stuck at work or would have had time to do all of those in the hour I lost. Wow what a season.

Let us know when you get to the argument over what exactly a magic number is.  That was riveting stuff.

:w00t:

That's the beauty of going back through that journey to hell and back.  You don't have to actually relive every experience.  Doesn't take much to skip a few pages.  But , having to go through the season and some of those conversations in real time was trying to say the least.

We ended up winning the Shart and still thank the guys who never waivered but most of them didn't feel the Dyubnik trade was going to have much of an impact when it occurred.  Funny looking back on some of those conversations now.  Tank (Hoss), myself, Rob and SicknFla were a wreck for awhile there.
