Now this might just be me, but I think this is the worst draft I've ever seen.

I don't think any of the players are any good(hyperbole) and the bills don't have a pick for me to care about.

I did zero draft homework for the first time in about ten years because I don't care about any players in this draft.

If it's just me being jaded feel free to say so. That has been known to happen.

You're just jaded.

Just kidding.

This is said to be a rather weak NFL draft class and the Bills having no first round pick doesn't help as you say.

I watched the first 3 picks tonight just to see what happened.  When it all went down as the pundits said it would, I switched to my recording of Caps/Rangers.  Still watching it now.  Currently 1:0 Washington, 13:35 left in 2nd period . For me.

Parkinson's is a bitch.  My dad face planted on his driveway yesterday while outside with my niece.  The aftermath of that is not the kind of stuff a 3 year old needs to see.  My brother has to be sick of the hospital because this was his third trip there in three weeks (granted the first was the birth of his daughter).  I'm pretty sure they gave him the Norm Peterson treatment when we walked into the lobby.

Yep, Parkinsons.  My grandfather has it pretty bad now.  The anxiety he has all of the time is just so not like him.  I'm not sure if it's the actual disease causing it or the countless medications he's on because of it.  I feel your pain Shrader.  Sorry to hear about your dad.

:(  Sorry, shrader and Derrico.

The ongoing job search continues.  I don't know about other lines of work, but Monster.com is f*cking useless for science.  The image is a typical list of jobs they send me that inexplicably match the search terms "research, scientist".  I uploaded my resume on Sunday to make it searchable by employers, and ended up deleting it yesterday after receiving three emails and two phone calls from insurance companies wanting to interview me to sell policies.  WTF?  Why would someone with a MSc and 13 years of experience in biomedical research have any interest in selling insurance?  Waste of everyone's time.

And the Terminix inspection Monday afternoon confirmed what I thought (and then some):  active termite infestation at the house.  The worst part is it seems the pieces of paper I have from the sellers indicating the damage was old and had been treated were probably BS and my home inspector missed it, because they damage they found is more than what would be expected from 2-3 years (I bought the house almost 9 years ago).  Nearly every floorboard in the basement had some degree of damage, and the little buggers were eating the insulation, too.  Somewhat miraculously, while the damage was widespread, it was not severe enough in any one place as to cause structural issues and require replacement.  All the insulation had to be removed, floorboards were sprayed down with some kind of repellent, bait stations placed all around the perimeter of the house, and new insulation installed.  Set me back almost $2500 even after a decent sympathy discount.

Tough break Bio, sorry to hear.  Hard to look at it this way but atleast it wasn't structural.  You can add a 0 to that price at the very minimum if you are getting into structure damage remediation.  Hopefully this will do it once and for all.

Today, my 14-year old stepson is serving his first of 3 days of in school suspension. Tuesday, some kid in his class slapped him, so he pushed him and asked why he hit him. The teacher deemed it a "physical altercation," so the principal levied 3 days ISS for each. My stepson says he never hit him, just pushed him away, but the "witnesses" that were brought in all said he slapped him back. Of course they were the other kid's friends.

The moral of the story, if someone slaps you, come back swinging.

Me, too!  And hopefully if I end up selling the place a potential homebuyer would consider it a plus that the house is now guaranteed for a year (or longer if they continued the plan) vs. another house where there's no guarantees.

There won't be a second slapping if you do

As a new parent, these subjects make me think how I will handle such situations. I was never given any guidance in these matters and being a frail young lad, it really wasn't in my best interest to provoke physical confrontations. My boy won't have such reservations.

It's not just you with the job search issue.  I got more insurance calls than anything else.  Was ridiculous.  I actually did a lot of my searching through LinkedIn and Careerbuilder.  In the end I actually found my position thru networking (a friend of a friend).  I wish you the best.

Sorry to hear about the termites too  :(

I've been starting to get emails lately from recruiters, stuff about how they have my resume on file.  I haven't posted anything online for at least 5 years, so it's funny when these things periodically pop up out of nowhere.  It's not insurance stuff, but they do typically take one word from the resume and tie the oddest positions into it, mostly project coordinator stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with anything I've ever done.

Thanks.  Trying to do the networking thing, but don't know many people where I'm looking.  Thought the thing with my boss's former colleague was going to be the ticket, but it's been two weeks and she never emailed me back.  :(

First off, my sympathies on the termite issues. Our house had an infestation at one point, and we're *still* finding signs of it, even after 11 years of living here. The previous owners did literally nothing to fix the damage--just hide it with paneling and stupidity. So, yah--termites suck, but so do homeowners who don't fix their mess, so good on you for getting it fixed!

Second, Monster is a joke. It hasn't been useful for damn near a decade. If you want real job search power, check out indeed.com or dice.com. I've found those to be the most useful in searching for relevant jobs in my field.

Weird, right?  And they've been oddly aggressive about it.  The one yesterday left a voicemail saying they wanted to schedule me for an interview next Tues.  I didn't apply to your job and you don't even know if I'm interested, but you have the audacity to try and schedule me for an interview?  So very stupid.  They must just be desperate for people and contact everyone who adds a resume or something.

Thanks, Chris... I've used Indeed some, but hadn't heard of dice.com.  I'll check that one out.  There are several others geared towards scientists, but a huge majority of the postings are for either junior / entry-level people or PhDs.  I fall into a rather unfortunate grey area of highly experienced but "not qualified" based on the MS vs PhD.  I'm tempted to start applying to PhD positions and write in the cover letter why they should consider me anyhow.

Like a friend told me when I was searching: it never hurts to try.

I did email her again last Thurs. (after it had been one week).  I have to figure if she hasn't replied by now, she's not interested.  I don't want to be a pest and I'm not going to beg someone to hire me.

That's what I figure; what do I have to lose?

That totally worked for my wife. She saw speech path positions all over the place, but hadn't gotten her masters yet. She called around and said almost verbatim, "I saw your posting for a speech pathologist. Would you also need a speech aide? I'm working towards a master, just haven't gotten there yet." And lo and behold, one school hired her. So yah--definitely lay out your case. It's bound to strike a chord with someone. :)

100% you should do this. I had an older friend who, a few years back, was applying for sales management positions which "required" an MBA...she didn't even have a bachelor's. But what she did have was ~15 years of real sales experience. Long story short, she's now working at Amazon comfortably making 6 figures. I know positions in the sciences can be more stringent with degree requirements than the business world, but it's absolutely worth applying.

Wow -- good on your friend!  Okay, you all have convinced me, lol.
