Adams: 'We've made it clear we want him here, he's made it clear he wants to be here'

He says they are aligned, it's just a matter of the numbers.

Thoughts?

That's about the most generic statement one could write.  Not even ChatGPT could be that generic.

Adams makes a lot of sound with his mouth but none of it means anything.

I disagree.

He's made it clear he thinks Alex wants to be here.

First of all, will Alex confirm?

Secondly, I think this effectively removes the crutch of "not our fault, player didn't want to be here".

If Tuch doesn't sign, either Adams got played, or it's because the Sabres wouldn't pay him.

IF Tuch doesn't sign a new contract with the Sabres, we've got WAY bigger problems than there being soft demand for tickets.

Until the puck drops against the Rags without him having a new extension in place, will chalk talk of him not signing up to our fears getting the better of us, but at this point can't really blame those that do allow that to happen because there's legitimate cause for us letting our fears get the better of us.  (Namely spending the entire off-season bringing as much of a 79 point operation back intact as was possible.)

There is now talk of the cap doubling in the next five to eight years. Players, especially top tier players, are starting to see the benefit of shorter term deals. I was told that an eight year deal is basically done but Tuch’s agents would like a shorter deal. My guess is that Tuch blinks before the start of the season.

Tuch is 29, I don't think I'd want an 8 year deal for him.

I'd love a shorter term deal from the Sabres point of view.  If he went long term and got $8.5m per year (maybe more), with the cap going up so much that won't look that bad in a few years.  But at the same time, I'd rather have the short term deal to take someone to 33-34 years old and then re-evaulate from there.

As per my above post, I don't either, but the contract may or may not look that bad by the end of it if the cap does what they think it will.

For example, lets say he got 8 years at 9m per year. That is a lot, and toward the end of the deal when Tuch is 36-37 its likely to look bad.  I don't think its outrageous to say the cap might/should be at least $140m in 8-9 years from now (considering they are estimating it at 113.5 in just 2 years) Well, last years cap was $88m I think?  A $9m deal when the cap is $140m is the same percentage of the cap as $5.6m was last year.  That wouldn't be that bad.

I know a lot of assumptions there, but you pay in the back end of a deal to get the guy signed up front.

Agent is dumb. Tuch isn’t getting another contract as a player taking him to 38

Tuch and his camp knows how bad it’ll look if the Sabres don’t resign him and they are probably using that in negotiations.
There’s probably not going to be a hometown discount for the hometown guy.

There is so much cap space available next summer. Every UFA should take it to 7/1/2026. It's silly cap space, because teams didn't use it this year. A team could sign McDavid and Tuch. And their competitor could sign Eichel and Kaprizov.

Sign with the Sabres for $9M this year... or $11M next summer. Or... and here's the fun part... go get join a winning franchise instead.

(And I know they'll all just re-sign with their current team for less than they should.)

at this point I believe it when I see it...  if this continues on into the season and we are like most years out of it in Dec or so, I could see Tuch changing his mind....  So, It could be numbers, it could be Tuchs deisre to wait and see... it could be a little of both

Day-to-day with the "not doing training camp practices until the extension is in place" injury designation, but will be healthy for opening day. Nothing to see here. I take his day-to-day designation as excellent news for re-signing shortly. (Unless Adams pulls a Jones/Parsons with him.)

(and again, if I were Tuch I still wouldn't sign until next summer.)

Tuch has been one of the best value players not on their ELC, we've had. I wonder if he's looking to make up for some of that, beyond his current value.

Hmmm. I read that as Adams is saying that Tuch has indicated he wants to be here and not that Adams thinks Tuch wants to be here. And so.. even then, it's all still nothing.

Reminder to everyone, Alex Tuch is signed for 1 more season.

Yes, but each day he doesn't sign is one day closer to a trade deadline.  So people are going to watch this, just like every fan watches every pending UFA on every team, every year. It's nothing different.

If I were Tuch I wouldn't sign here at all.

He is an A+ player who would be a valuable addition to every roster in the NHL. With likely my last ever NHL contract I would be chasing a cup not ending a historically bad playoff draught.

For sure. And I wouldn't, either. Tuch got to live out his childhood dream playing in red and black, and in blue and gold. That's awesome. But now, he should live out his childhood dream of playing for a Cup contender. The Sabres are at least 3 years away from that (unless they sign McDavid in UFA next summer... which, he should also be looking to join a contender, not a perpetual rebuild). Alex, go -- be free!

But even if he were to re-sign in Buffalo, he should still wait until 7/1/26 and the stupid levels of money that will be available.
