According to Pierre Lebrun, Sabres have interest in Brett Pesce.

I'll worry about the salary structure later. Let's get Pesce in first and then go from there.

Totally agree!! Make the trade. Stack the team for a good run. Let the team, environment and success reel him in!!! As for Goaloofson not being worth much (Mentioned in another post in this thread), he scores goals, he is a PP specialist that can hit the target. We may be tired of him, but he does produce overall. He has some worth in this league!!

Thanks!  Wow that is an unreal Corsi considering the quality of elite talent he faces.  How much would this cost?  Put him with Power and let's go!!

He's got size, he's got top-pairing usage as the defensive-focused guy, he's from NY state...   There are other D who score more points, there are other folks who would be credited with more hits, but there are very few defensemen available who would be considered better all-around than Pesce.

Anyone have a good handle on the Canes cap situation? What can they afford to sign him for or are they going to be able to take an salary away from us?

They have the space at the moment, but they won't next summer when his deal is up and new deals kick in for Aho, Teuravainen, Necas, and Jarvis.

Good article.

The second most minutes on the league’s second best PK unit stands out to me.
Most fighting majors on the Canes the last 5 years, he will stick up for teammates.

He sounds like a perfect partner for Power.

I don’t think he’s getting traded.

I think he loves Carolina and wants to stay and the Canes have dangled this story to LeBrun in order to frighten Pesce into taking less than he’s worth.

I mean he says he loves the Carolina weather and gets told Buffalo and Edmonton are sniffing around?

Fake news.

I agree, he loves the Canes. But, I think changing agents is a bit much for a scare tactic. And he’s likely going to be way more likely to give the Canes the hometown discount rather than the Sabres. He’s going to be costly.

If Svechnikov (and some others) are fully healthy, Carolina is a Cup-contender. Losing Pesce would be a huge blow to their team over the course of a season/playoffs. I don't think they move him. Unlike when Skinner was dealt on the expiring deal, they don't have the defensive equivalent of Svechnikov chasing Pesce down to the 3rd pairing.

Because it's an expiring deal, I doubt teams would have to give up too much for him. You sweeten the deal a bit if you can do a sign-and-trade. But from Carolina's perspective, it's best to just keep him and go for the Cup again next season, then let the cards fall where they may.

He is from outside of NYC.  Not quite sure how this is relevant, unless he enjoys high taxes. 😂

Oilers also want him so I suspect the price will be fairly high.

He is the type of player we need though and would be top 4 and be a shutdown guy. Decent transition player too. Stylistically I think Adams wants us to be Carolina so it's definitely a fit. Trade and sign deal, do it.

One thing that worries me would be the combined trade cost and contract.

I'd give him 5/6x7mil at max but I doubt he'd take that

Not interested in a deal longer than 5 years. 3-4 would be preferable but I'd go 5 to get him happy. 6 and above is too long.

I’d rather stay 5 too, but the cap will be over $100M by year 6 and with the way they are set up, I could live with 8 if it kept the cap hit around $6M.

VO, 39 overall, a prospect is probably the price. They can't re- sign pesce so it makes some sense to trade him this summer when he read value.

The Vegas and Eichel stuff was leaked and then denied for months. It kept coming up.

IF he's legitimately available, that would seem to be about the right price.  Because the only reason he'd be available is if Carolina knew they couldn't ink him to a new deal and are looking to get value for him before he walks in a year.

And then it comes down to, would anybody else top that package without a LT deal in place?  Have to figure, of the contending teams, not a lot would have the pieces to make the deal happen AND the cap space a year from now to get him what he wants.  Yes, the Sabres will be getting near the cap next off-season, but they'll still have some room for a piece or 2.

I agree that this guy looks like an ideal fit for the Sabres.  I'm glad that the team is looking into this type of player.  Obviously it takes two to tango.  If the player is still under contract with Carolina (is he going into his final contract year?), the Sabres will have to give assets to get a good player and if he's a UFA (this past season was the last one on his deal?), then he's going to have to want to play in Buffalo and it's gonna cost in salary.

Based on what I'm reading, it looks like he's going into his final year, so it's a trade scenario.  I think that what's posted above "VO, 39 overall, and a prospect" looks like a reasonable deal.  What about trading the Sabres' 1st round pick, straight up, for this player, with a sign and trade contingency?  If he's willing to sign a deal, would it be worth it to get immediate needed defensive help, rather than drafting a guy who might not be ready for 2-3 years, and, as is often the case with drafting in pro sports (and in the NHL in particular) could be a bust?  I understand that this is a top-15 pick and might be the highest the Sabres draft in a very long time.  And there isn't much term left for the player.  So it's probably too much, but I'm just throwing it out there to see what people think.  This kind of player is EXACTLY what this team needs.

I guess a valid question is…how much is too much in terms of cap dollars spent on the blueline?

Dahlin $10m
Power $8m
Pesce $6m
Muel $4m
5/6/7 $6m combined

$34 mil cap hit? Too much, just fine, still room to spend?

When is the damned gif tool gonna work again?

This made me think of why Carolina may move him.  Assuming that their fans are correct and Pesce is their #5D in spite of his usage, then they will try and give him the 5th most money.  If he wants to be paid by usage, then he might price himself out of Carolina and still be at an acceptable price to us.
