Doohicksie
It's a good number. There isn't another notable (all-time great) Sabre with that number so he can make it his own. The only one that looks close to me is Vanek but I don't see him as a someone you'd put on an all-time Sabres roster.

A quick look at one site and I see Martin, Satan, and Andreychuk as clearly ahead of him. Am I missing anyone?
Randall Flagg
Awesome. His dad's calves hint at rivaling inkman's. (Inkman is the guy whose calves we joke about right?)

Inky's calves are no joke, man. They are the most real deal of all the real deals. Trust me.

LGR4GM
For those asking about Moulson... hears crickets... Botterill said flat out he will not be back with the Sabres. https://theathletic.com/407746/2018/06/25/buffalo-sabres-matt-moulson-ahl-2018-nhl-season/ Edited June 25, 2018 by Skurk Liger

Mustache of God
So if the Sabres were to sign Vanek in FA would Vanek have to ask Dahlin to wear #26?
Sabres Fan in NS
So if the Sabres were to sign Vanek in FA would Vanek have to ask Dahlin to wear #26? I think Vanek would not even ask and would just wear #62. He wore #62 on Detroit, I think.
Doohicksie
I believe the question was asked tongue-in-cheek.

Drunkard
I'd take Vanek over Satan all day. His career stats are slightly better but the Slayer fan inside my brain says Satan all day!
Stoner
#1 This encapsulates what's wrong with your thinking re:Dahlin. Thomas Vanek had roughly 250 goals and 500 points as a Sabre. Yet a rookie defenseman is going to pass him in one season? Exactly why are you putting such unrealistic expectations on Dahlin? Thank God you're not Botterill/Housley. Botterill yesterday was already talking about sheltered minutes for Dahlin.

Vanek gets shoveled into the JAG group with the Staffords and the Gaustads of his era, but he was by far the best of that group for the longest time. Dahlin will almost certainly not surpass him in one season.

DarthEbriate
If Dahlin is a Sabre for 10+ years and breaks, what... 600 points? -- he's the best 26. Even if he switches numbers at some point. As to Vanek/Satan. it's Vanek hands down, although he benefited from two seasons in mostly wide-open hockey and a very balanced, excellent scoring lineup... something Satan could never dream of while he was here (he later had it with Pitt and earned a Cup for it). During their primes, both players were ultimately relied on to be nearly the sole source of offense on center-bereft squads -- Satan had a season with Drury/Briere and Vanek had two, but played with Roy. Vanek did a lot more for the offense... took the punishment for deflections, very underrated passer, too. Vanek was 5th overall and Miro was a 5th rounder, so it passes the talent prediction test as well.

Doohicksie
This number subject has always intrigued me. Really what's the big deal about it?? Rip Simonick. There's the perception, right or wrong (or maybe somewhere in between) that he assigns jersey numbers with the callous disregard of a despot. "You want 15? 15's available. But here, take #41." (True story... Jack wore 41 early on.) And it gets people wrapped around the axle. There's something about a player earning his number, but the sense is the Rip is the one who determines who's deserved their own number and who hasn't, and his criteria are not uniformly applied. Howeva... Rip does seem to have a knack for knowing who was a real prospect and who was struggling to make a roster. The blue chip kids got real hockey numbers. The fringe guys had to earn it. And I don't think there were more than a handful of guys of Rip's career that he was wrong about.
