OT: The Geography of NY

I can back up Liger's point. I grew up in the next town over from Geneva, and it is DEFINITELY not anywhere close to WNY. Nor is Canandaigua, Penn Yan, Honeoye Falls, etc. It's an entirely different place. (For starters, the yokels use the word "soda")

 

Unofficially, I've always considered the (716) area code to be WNY, or, if that bothers you, then Batavia/Leroy being the eastern boundary. I've just never felt Rochester or the burbs were necessarily the same as WNY. Midwestern NY maybe?

 

Also, Buffalo feels more like a Midwestern city, given its blue collar culture and proximity to the Great Lakes and Canada, than an East Coast city like Boston or NYC.

Also, in my opinion, the cultural differences between any location within upstate NY (Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany, etc...) are very minor. I'm defining "upstate" here to mean everything north of Rockland and Westchester Counties. This entire region is probably better represented culturally by Buffalo than by NYC. If the Sabres and Bills weren't such historically loser sports franchises, most of this region would probably be considered strong Sabre/Bill territory.

Because we got Buffalo TV and one night I watched Danny Gare slide into the end boards after beating Montreal in overtime in the playoffs. As much as that was the gateway drug, the hard stuff was offered to me the following Christmas when I got a transistor radio and tuned in to hear Sabres play the Bruins at the Aud -- and there was Rick.

Remsen is ~4 hours from Buffalo. Its basically in the Adirondacks. Buffalo is closer to Cleveland than Remsen.

There's an art director for the Browns in Cleveland who started following me on social media and he thinks I'm right up the road. Well, as the crow flies... Be like a 15 minute flight, but it's a good 3.5 hour drive. 1 hr to PA border, 45 minutes across through Erie, 1 hour and some change into Cleveland from OH border. Damn you Ashtabula, you always seem so much closer... ugh

Western is right next to Westernville and they are 6 miles outside of Rome, NY. There's one street, a county route, Lake Delta and Woods Valley, a small ski hill.

 

Other points of interest in Westernville are General William Floyd's house (it's a nice, decent size, old ass country house) and his grave(it's nothing special). He signed the declaration of Independence, by the way.

 

As far as I can tell, Western, NY is a road sign on rt46, about 500 feet before the road sign that says Village of Westernville.

Since this bugger has been resurrected and the title suggests a conversation about general NY geography, I’ll share a slice of life from Malone, NY.

Dutch Schultz faced his first trial for tax evasion in Malone. He came to town a year before his trial and handed money out like candy, becoming a local hero. Very good, simple people, secluded from the tones of the rest of the country. These folks marched to a different drum. We’ve joked about us “fur traders”, truth is, that’s very close to the truth.

A few miles from the Rez, where half of everyone’s family is from, a few miles from the Quebec border, where the other half of everyone’s family is from, and a few miles from the northern edge of the Adirondack Park, where all the real hippies went after the 60’s ended. The one and only southbound highway out of Malone is Rte 30, right straight through the park.

I am extremely fortunate to grow up where I did. I got to see and be a lot of different things.

If your ever in the mind to take a fantastic road trip, come to the North Country. You can hit Lake Placid, Lake Meacham, DeBar Mtn. In a weekend. Easy. You could take another over night trip to Montreal as well. A beautiful hour drive. This one is a gem. Take Rte 30N to Constable, NY and cross at the Trout River crossing. Super easy and chill. It’s a beautiful drive up 139 through the Quebec side of the river valley. You’ll cross the Mercier(with the tattered Mohawk warrior flags to greet you) into the island. Best trip you’ll ever take. The nicest and friendliest people you’ll ever meet. Real friggin poutine too.

 

Forgot to mention how gorgeous everyone is. Absolutely. Gorgeous. Giggidy.
