Trade ideas and speculation

Even if it may make some sense for Philly to trade Simmonds, that's precisely why I dismiss it. After all, this is a team that decided investing long term in Grossman, Schenn (Luke, the crappy one), Mark Streit and Andy MacDonald was a good idea as the core of their defense.

MacDonald, Giroux, and Simmonds are the only 3 players on their roster signed for the next 3 years; everyone else is going to be a UFA in that time span, and 9 of them will be FA's next offseason. There's going to be some major overhauling of that franchise, and I say we take advantage of it.

I guess I just don't see them trading one of their few long term players who also happens to be on a team friendly contract. It may make some sense for them to blow it up, but I find it unlikely given their owner's history.

It's starting to seem that impatience is creeping in. Sharp, Kessel and now Okposo? IMO, we are getting ahead of ourselves. These are moves that make sense a few years down the road. O'Reilly makes more sense due to his age.

Impatience has been creeping in since the RoR talks, lets be honest he is a C/LW, people are delusional if they think he plays all forward positions.

We don't need C/LW we got enough of those.   If you trade for RoR you send zemgus the other way and I'd rather keep him for doing the same job but at a cheaper rate.

Delusional? Before MacKinnon's injury, O'Reilly was playing RW with Mac in the middle and Landeskog at LW. That's not a delusion, it's a fact.

I totally agree. With the reported price that it would cost to get Sharp or Kessel just seems incredibly high for a team that i think most of us can agree would peak at around 85 points next season. I am not sure what the price on Okposo would be, but i agree with Elliott Friedman who said today that a lot of the times teams put players as "available" as a way to test their value around the league. And if theres a crazy team that is willing to over pay, you truly consider it.

I think staying with the blueprint is the way to go. Theres a kid in this draft Brock Boeser that reminds scouts of Kyle Okposo. Has similar playing style. That seems like it makes no sense to me at this point of where the Sabres are at.

That's a different story.  In your previous post you wanted to acquire Gibson for Rochester.  Now you want him to be the Sabres starter in the fall.

Yeah, I want the kid as our goalie of the future. Whether he continues in the AHL for a year like he was, or whether he is the Sabres goalie, doesn't matter. Not that hard to understand the concept.

I think it's pretty clear from the comments that DDB and GMTM made that they will not bring in a veteran if they have to give up an A prospect to do so.  I think a guy like ROR is as far as they will go in having to give up an A prospect (and other assets).   We have a veteran presence with Gorges, Moulson, Gionta and CMac.   We're not a playoff team in 15-16, so why mortgage the future.  Frankly, I'd go the free agent route for a goalie (2-3 year deal).  Next 2-3 years is about changing the culture, developing the prospects, and becoming entertaining again.  Stay the course and maybe we get lucky next year with the new draft lottery system.

I think trading for John Gibson this summer is a pipe dream, though. The Ducks don't need to move any of their two goalies until next summer since both have contracts for next season. I think the only way the Ducks move one of them this summer is if they get blown away with an offer, and no way GMTM is blowing anyone out for a goaltender.

Trading for a player like Okposo would not be something that falls under the distinction of "too soon". He is 27 years old, easily young enough to grow with our young core. He also fills a position of need, RW. He is also a very talented player with some grit. Why wouldn't we want a guy like that on Eichel's wing? We need some talented veteran players to play with our youth, can't jut trot out a team of kids.

I don't want him.  He has seriously impaired vision and is essentially monocular.  This is a huge impairment for a professional athlete where hand-eye coordination  is paramount.  I doubt he will ever be the same player he was.

Except he already returned from the injury and said his vision is fine...

I highly doubt it is fine.  Players always tend to understate the effects of injuries.  I know he returned to play, but I don't know that he has been playing at the same level.  I suspect Garth Snow is aware of his limitations and does not want to sign him to an extension.

Hard to fake an eye test. Either you see the small letters or you dont.

I would think it's a little bit more involved than that. I would have a hard time making the level of commitment needed until the medical team had to go over all the information, I would even insist on sending him to independent specialist before agreeing to a deal. I would also insist on a contract with protections for the Sabres in case the eye becomes an issue down the line.

That and if Snow is in the process of offering an extension, it'd clearly show it's of no concern. And yes, you can't fake an eye test. I know people in that profession.
