News: WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP DAY 6

By Kris Baker sabresprospects.com

Mikhail Grigorenko scored a third-period goal to tie the game, but Russia couldn’t stifle a talented Swedish attack down the stretch en route to dropping a 3-2 decision Tuesday at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Sweden dictated the pace of play early, taking away the Russians’ time and space and winning possession battles to get goals from Andreas Johnson (TOR) and Nick Sorensen (ANA) to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

Russia halved the deficit with an Alexander Barabanov power play tally in the24th minute, and despite Sweden continuing to carry the play for the balance of the second period, emerged with bit of a boost in the final twenty minutes.

Just past the midway of the third period with Russia again on the power play, Grigorenko raced behind the Swedish net to a loose puck, chipped it to a teammate, and rotated to the edge of the crease, where he set a screen and deflected a Pavel Buchnevich (NYR) shot to knot the score at two goals apiece. The goal, which came with 8:08 remaining in regulation, gives Grigorenko six points (3+3) through four tourney games.

The game would remained tied until Jacob de la Rose (MTL) hit the front of the net and tipped a Gustav Oloffson (MIN) shot for the game winning goal with 2:21 left on the clock.

Team Russia defenseman Nikita Zadorov went without a point for the second straight game, finishing with one shot on goal while showing flashes of his puck-rushing ability.

The victory gives Sweden a first-place finish in Group B, setting up a Thursday quarterfinal matchup versus Slovakia. With the loss, Russia concludes pool play in the third position.

Elsewhere, Sabres prospect Rasmus Ristolainen missed his second-straight game due to illness as Finland completed the preliminary round with a 4-3 shootout loss to Switzerland. Flavio Schmutz, Fabrice Herzog (TOR) and Nico Dunner provided regulation markers for the Swiss. Ville Pokka (NYI), Aleksi Mustonen, and Saku Mäenalanen (NSH) countered for Finland, who moves on to the quarterfinal to face the Czech Republic.

2014 WJC Video: Mikhail Grigorenko, Russia

The outcome is no doubt not what they hoped for, as Russia fell to host Sweden, 3-2, in their final game of the preliminary round at the 2014 World Junior Championship. Russia lives to fight another day, of course, but the road to the gold medal game just became slightly more difficult with the loss on New Year's Eve.

Leading the way on offense for Russia at this tournament is forward Mikhail Grigorenko. He potted a goal in the loss to Sweden, and for the tournament has produced four goals and three assists for seven points in four games.

Grigorenko was made available to Team Russia by the Buffalo Sabres, who drafted the big forward in the first round of the 2012 NHL Draft. The native of Khabarovsk, Russia has had a difficult time staying in the Sabres' lineup so far in the 2013-14 season, and the possibility exists that he could end up back in the junior ranks once he returns to North America. But a good performance at the 2014 WJC might sway the Sabres to keep him with the parent club for the remainder of the season.

Grigorenko spoke with the media following the loss to Sweden, a portion of which is captured in this Hockey's Future video.

I have to say that if any team was going to beat the USA in this years WJC, Russia would be the one I wanted to do it simply because they have Zadorov and Grigorenko. The fact that Zadorov and Grigs contributed in big ways makes me happy too.

Nikita with a pair of point bombs.

No love between US and Russia,

Hartman with an embarrassing high stick from the bench on the end.

He should be suspended by the IIHF for the remainder of the tournament. Grigo apologized in a post game interview for the skate by celebration past the USA bench that took place after the SHG that clinched the game.

Russians rally for 5-3 win

The defending champions are out. Gold medalists in 2013, the United States ran into penalty trouble against Russia and couldn't capitalize on their own chances.

Nikita Zadorov scored two 5-on-3 goals in the second period with one-timers from the point to lead Russia to a 5-3 win and a spot in the semi-finals. Russia will face the winner of the Sweden-Slovakia game later this afternoon in one game on Saturday.

Great goals. Nikita will be a star and 12-14 teams will be pissed that they passed on him in the draft. With #16 he reminds me of my favorite Russian d man Konstantinov.

Ya I definetly think Zadarov is going to be a gem. Great to see Grigorenko is having a great tourney. He rips up the Q, now rips up a bigger stage with higher competition. There is obviously still hope for him yet but it still baffles me how lost he looks on the Sabres sometimes. A year in the A next season will do wonders for this kid.

In other news, Canada leads 1-0 after 1.

Update: Canada scores again and is up 2-0 half way through the game.

Swiss score with 1 second left, 2-1 Canada after 2.

Canada running away with it 4-1 with 6 min left.

Doooonnnn'tt caaaarrreeee :P

its much better that he isn't playing in Canada, they would run him out of the NHL if he knocked the Canadians out of the tourney in the quarters

Atleast in the US, the tournament isn't followed that closely (bigger headlines in Canada for the US winning it last year then in the US news) and he won't be known much as the kid who knocked out the US

He was put in some tough situations as well. He played the PK all game, was out on the ice for both Zadorov goals and also was put out there for a huge number of draws (he won 16/24 of them). His team relied on him and his team got through to the semi's, which is good to see

2014 WJC Video: Nikita Zadorov, Russia

After falling behind Team USA 3-2 in the first period of their quarterfinal match at the 2014 World Junior Championship, Russia proceeded to score the next three goals in the game to secure a 5-3 win along with a trip to the semi-finals.

One of the scoring heroes for Russia was defenseman Nikita Zadorov, who potted two power-play goals during two consecutive 5-on-3 advantages. Zadorov's second goal made the score 4-3, and stood up as the game-winning goal for Russia. Forward Pavel Buchnevich also netted two goals, with his second into an empty net helping to salt the game away for the Russians.

In five WJC games to date, Zadorov has netted four goals and added one assist, which includes his game-winner and the two power-play markers, plus a shorthanded goal. The London Knights defenseman and Buffalo Sabres prospect is playing in his first U20 WJC, but has also played in one U18 WJC for Russia.

Zadorov spoke with the media following the win over the USA, with some of those comments being captured in this Hockey's Future video.
