Sabres Prospects News

Recommended Posts

Didn't know if there was an appropriate thread for general offseason prospect news so I figured I'd start one we can lump all the news into. If one exsists, mods please merge. thank you.

I'll start with this one..

Kris Baker@SabresProspects

Joel Armia has begun his Finnish military conscript (along w/ 71 other athletes):http://www.hs.fi/urheilu/Armia+ja+Markus+Granlund+armeijaan/a1305572719901 #letsplayguns #Sabres

Looks like Armia is getting his military service requirements out of the way this Summer.

I'm not nearly clever enough to follow up the previous posts in this thread. I'll keep it simple: I'm super-excited about Armia possibly coming over a year early (didn't expect even a chance of this until next year), even if he spends most of his time in the AHL. Kid has a ton of offensive ability, and maybe even more important than that, he's got a certain swagger about his game that most of this team lacks. I'm just tired of players who are prone to wild swings in self-confidence.

Isn't there an age limit rule for playing in the AHL? Or does this not apply to Euro players?

The 20 year old age rule only applies to North American skaters I believe. Specifically certain leagues.

Someone can clarify with detail.

Edit:

With that being said, yes, his military mandate being fulfilled this summer most likely means Joel will be in the A next season.

Good for him and good for us.

Armia may not be headed for the "A". I seem to recall Darcy suggesting that the league he is in now is a higher level of competition than the AHL. He may come straight to the Sabres when he is ready for it.

It's only for players who are playing in major junior. Europeans and college players are free to go to the NHL at any point. That's a rule that constantly bothers a lot of college fans.

Pretty much. If he ends up in the AHL at all I wouldn't expect him to stay long.

This Arnia guy must be better then I thought. He somehow figured out how to get 6 to 12 months of military service done in 3 summer months.

From what I've read, Finnish athletes get off ridiculously easy with their service. Over on hfboards, somebody from Finland said most athletes only serve around 30-45 days of the required 180. They're technically in the military for 180, but most of that is spent doing the same things they'd normally do as an athlete.

According to a Finnish newspaper Armia has been offered a three year ELC with the Sabres. He's got until next Friday to sign it.

He still has a year left on his Finnish contract so he wouldn't be here until 2013-14.

Is there a possibility that the Sabres can make a deal with the Finnish league/team and pry him out early?

per bucky's twit: Finnish reporter says agent for Armia says he'll stay in Finland next year regardless to complete military service, plus develop game.

i also saw that audette's son (daniel) went #1 in the QMJHL draft. kid was born here; maybe he'll return some day soon to give us a sorely needed sniper who plays with a bit of an edge.

At 16 years old he's only reached 5'7". His father was only 5'8". That makes both of them smaller than Danny Briere.

Bucky's about 2 hours late with that one. Kris Baker broke that story. I had a google alert on Armia and got a copy of the article this morning.
