Free Agency Frenzy

I don't get this one at all. 20M is pretty reasonable. Tampa is throwing $$$ everywhere. They get exclusive rights, and then he settles for 20M and 4????

It's a style of play he's used to at least. Boring.

Maybe he just wants to live in the NYC area. He was drafted by NJ and played there -- maybe his wife is from there? But without some kind of personal reason like that, it does seem strange.

Point 4 well made. I'm really surprised by the lack of moves in the NorthEast. Especially in Ottawa. Everything I read said they were going to be movers and shakers.

Also of note Weber and Sekera, though young, are bound to be an improvement over Kalinin and Pratt and if Teppo comes back, and an Orpik is obtained via trade or still in the UFA, then that porous defense might actually be much better. A lot of iffs, I know, but the dreaded potential is there.

Don't know about his wife but he's from Flint and really wanted to play for Detroit. As for Tampa, they were reportedly only offering $4 million per.

In reality, I am so sick and tired of all this Soupy talk. Sorry to get political on this one, but it ranks right up there with the incessant Obama press coverage and makes me want to

Does anyone else think it's odd that the NHL network wasn't even covering this day until 7pm?

EDIT: And it's TSN's coverage to boot.

The NHL has a network? really? :w00t:

Metropolit signs with Philly, blah blah blah

Let me just pose a question to the people who have been posting here all day...I'm trying not to get ansy because of all the excitement of the day, but can anybody tell me why we should expect a different result next season when we're going into it with virtually the same roster that missed the playoffs and struggled consistently all year? In all seriousness. How will it be any different?

Drastic changes aren't always necessary. As the guys on WGR noted this morning, Montreal didn't make too many changes last summer, but that team came together nicely last year. (This is NOT a guarantee that the Sabres will improve. Just a statement that changing the roster isn't always the solution.)

1) free agency isn't over.

2) trades still a possibility

3) a young team got a year older

4) how many teams ahead of us last year have gotten markedly better? Same question but gotten worse or would also ice virtually the same roster?

Let's give em a chance before we bury them.

1) Agree, never said it was though. Plus you know we aren't bringing in any big-time players, so it's debatable how much of a difference any of the guys we might get will have on a team that needs a swift kick in the arse.

2) Trades still a *faint* possibility. Regeir said today he's content with Max on the roster going into the season. He is our biggest trade bait probably.

3) Doesn't do much for me. Pomminstein might be your guy, but other than him I don't see any leader emerging from that dressing room.

4) If the teams in the East iced the same rosters we'd still miss the playoffs. We weren't better then, and aren't now. Only way we get better is if they somehow get worse and we just stand pat.

I'm not one of the "daily front office-rippers" that frequent the board, but I think it makes a lot more sense to expect the Sabres to do nothing than it does to expect anything. I use history to make sense of the future, and history tells me we will make one or two marginal moves. I'm of the opinion that it's going to take more than that to fix this ship.

All I know as of this moment is through all of this and the absurd contract that Soupy signed and the one Vancouver is reportedly offering Sundin, I still believe Mark Streit and Brooks Orpik are still unsigned. I don't think Orpik will happen, but maybe Darcy suprises us. I would love to get Mark Streit, but I don't see that happening either. I also noticed that Brendan Morrison is still available and Columbus has yet to sign him. The day is not over and there are still good players to be had. Even elite players to be had. We'll see what the rest of today and the rest of the week brings.

Edit: By the way, TSN reporting that the Holik is back with the Devils for one year at $2.5 million.
